Uniformly perfect sets, Hausdorff dimension, and conformal capacity

Using the definition of uniformly perfect sets in terms of convergent sequences, we apply lower bounds for the Hausdorff content of a uniformly perfect subset $E$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ to prove new explicit lower bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of $E.$ These results also yield lower bounds for capacity test functions, which we introduce, and enable us to characterize domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with uniformly perfect boundaries. Moreover, we show that an alternative method to define capacity test functions can be based on the Whitney decomposition of the domain considered.

Lipschitz constants and quadruple symmetrization by Möbius transformations

Due to the invariance properties of cross-ratio, Möbius transformations are often used to map a set of points or other geometric object into a symmetric position to simplify a problem studied. However, when the points are mapped under a Möbius transformation, the distortion of the Euclidean geometry is rarely considered. Here, we identify several cases where the distortion caused by this symmetrization can be measured in terms of the Lipschitz constant of the Möbius transformation in the Euclidean or the chordal metric.

On the hyperbolic metric of certain domains

We prove that if $E$ is a compact subset of the unit disk ${\mathbb D}$ in the complex plane, if $E$ contains a sequence of distinct points $a_n\not= 0$ for $n\geq 1$ such that $\lim_{n\to\infty} a_n=0$ and for all $n$ we have $ |a_{n+1}| \geq \frac{1}{2} |a_n| $, and if $G={\mathbb D} \setminus E$ is connected and $0\in \partial G$, then there is a constant $c>0$ such that for all $z\in G$ we have $ λ_{G } (z) \geq c/|z| $ where $λ_{G } (z)$ is the density of the hyperbolic metric in $G$.

Mobile disks in hyperbolic space and minimization of conformal capacity

Our focus is to study constellations of disjoint disks in the hyperbolic space, the unit disk equipped with the hyperbolic metric. Each constellation corresponds to a set $E$ which is the union of $m>2$ disks with hyperbolic radii $r_j>0, j=1,...,m$. The centers of the disks are not fixed and hence individual disks of the constellation are allowed to move under the constraints that they do not overlap and their hyperbolic radii remain invariant. Our main objective is to find computational lower bounds for the conformal capacity of a given constellation. The capacity depends on the centers and radii in a very complicated way even in the simplest cases when $m=3$ or $m=4$. In the absence of analytic methods our work is based on numerical simulations using two different numerical methods, the boundary integral equation method and the $hp$-FEM method, resp. Our simulations combine capacity computation with minimization methods and produce extremal cases where the disks of the constellation are grouped next to each other. This resembles the behavior of animal colonies minimizing heat flow in arctic areas.

Image augmentation with conformal mappings for a convolutional neural network

For augmentation of the square-shaped image data of a convolutional neural network (CNN), we introduce a new method, in which the original images are mapped onto a disk with a conformal mapping, rotated around the center of this disk and mapped under such a Möbius transformation that preserves the disk, and then mapped back onto their original square shape. This process does not result the loss of information caused by removing areas from near the edges of the original images unlike the typical transformations used in the data augmentation for a CNN. We offer here the formulas of all the mappings needed together with detailed instructions how to write a code for transforming the images. The new method is also tested with simulated data and, according the results, using this method to augment the training data of 10 images into 40 images decreases the amount of the error in the predictions by a CNN for a test set of 160 images in a statistically significant way (p-value=0.0360).

Hilbert metric in the unit ball

The Hilbert metric between two points $x,y$ in a bounded convex domain $G$ is defined as the logarithm of the cross-ratio of $x,y$ and the intersection points of the Euclidean line passing through the points $x,y$ and the boundary of the domain. Here, we study this metric in the case of the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$. We present an identity between the Hilbert metric and the hyperbolic metric, give several inequalities for the Hilbert metric, and results related to the inclusion properties of the balls defined in the Hilbert metric. Furthermore, we study the distortion of the Hilbert metric under conformal mappings.

Metrics and quasimetrics induced by point pair function

We study the point pair function in subdomains $G$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove that, for every domain $G\subsetneq\mathbb{R}^n$, the this function is a quasi-metric with the constant less than or equal to $\sqrt{5}\slash2$. Moreover, we show that it is a metric in the domain $G=\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{0\}$ with $n\geq1$. We also consider generalized versions of the point pair function, depending on an arbitrary constant $α>0$, and show that in some domains these generalizations are metrics if and only if $α\leq12$.

Möbius metric in sector domains

The Möbius metric $δ_G$ is studied in the cases where its domain $G$ is an open sector of the complex plane. We introduce upper and lower bounds for this metric in terms of the hyperbolic metric and the angle of the sector, and then use these results to find bounds for the distortion of the Möbius metric under quasiregular mappings defined in sector domains. Furthermore, we numerically study the Möbius metric and its connection to the hyperbolic metric in polygon domains.

Numerical computation of a preimage domain for an infinite strip with rectilinear slits

Let $Ω$ be the multiply connected domain in the extended complex plane $\overline{\C}$ obtained by removing $m$ non-overlapping rectilinear segments from the infinite strip $S=\{z\,:\, \left|\Im z\right|<π/2\}$. In this paper, we present an iterative method for numerical computation of a conformally equivalent bounded multiply connected domain $G$ in the interior of the unit disk $\D$ and the exterior of $m$ non-overlapping smooth Jordan curves. We demonstrate the utility of the proposed method through two applications. First, we estimate the capacity of condensers of the form $(S,E)$ where $E\subset S$ be a union of disjoint segments. Second, we determine the streamlines associated with uniform incompressible, inviscid and irrotational flow past disjoint segments in the strip $S$.

Conformal capacity of hedgehogs

In this paper we discuss problems concerning the conformal condenser capacity of "hedgehogs", which are compact sets $E$ in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}=\{z:\,|z|<1\}$ consisting of a central body $E_0$ that is typically a smaller disk $\overline{\mathbb{D}}_r=\{z:\,|z|\le r\}$, $0<r<1$, and several spikes $E_k$ that are compact sets lying on radial intervals $I(α_k)=\{te^{iα_k}:\,0\le t<1\}$. The main questions we are concerned with are the following: (1) How does the conformal capacity ${\rm cap}(E)$ of $E=\cup_{k=0}^n E_k$ behave when the spikes $E_k$, $k=1,\ldots,n$, move along the intervals $I(α_k)$ toward the central body if their hyperbolic lengths are preserved during the motion? (2) How does the capacity ${\rm cap}(E)$ depend on the distribution of angles between the spikes $E_k$? We prove several results related to these questions and discuss methods of applying symmetrization type transformations to study the capacity of hedgehogs. Several open problems, including problems on the capacity of hedgehogs in the three-dimensional hyperbolic space, also will be suggested.

Conformal capacity and polycircular domains

We study numerical conformal mapping of multiply connected planar domains with boundaries consisting of unions of finitely many circular arcs, so called polycircular domains. We compute the conformal capacities of condensers defined by polycircular domains. Experimental error estimates are provided for the computed capacity and, when possible, the rate of convergence under refinement of discretisation is analysed. The main ingredients of the computation are two computational methods, on one hand the boundary integral equation method combined with the fast multipole method and on the other hand the $hp$-FEM method. The results obtained with these two methods agree with high accuracy.

The Ptolemy-Alhazen problem and quadric surface mirror reflection

We discuss the problem of the reflection of light on spherical and quadric surface mirrors. In the case of spherical mirrors, this problem is known as the Alhazen problem. For the spherical mirror problem, we focus on the reflection property of an ellipse, and show that the catacaustic curve of the unit circle follows naturally from the equation obtained from the reflection property of an ellipse. Moreover, we provide an algebraic equation that solves Alhazen's problem for quadric surface mirrors.

Conformally invariant complete metrics

For a domain $G$ in the one-point compactification $\overline{\mathbb{R}}^n = \mathbb{R}^n \cup \{ \infty\}$ of $\mathbb{R}^n, n \ge 2$, we characterize the completeness of the modulus metric $μ_G$ in terms of a potential-theoretic thickness condition of $\partial G\,,$ Martio's $M$-condition. Next, we prove that $\partial G$ is uniformly perfect if and only if $μ_G$ admits a minorant in terms of a Möbius invariant metric. Several applications to quasiconformal maps are given.

Level sets of potential functions bisecting unbounded quadrilaterals

We study the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann problem for the Laplace equation in the complement of a bounded convex polygonal quadrilateral in the extended complex plane. The Dirichlet\,/\,Neumann conditions at opposite pairs of sides are $\{0,1\}$ and $\{0,0\},$ resp. The solution to this problem is a harmonic function in the unbounded complement of the polygon known as the \emph{potential function} of the quadrilateral. We compute the values of the potential function including its value at infinity.

Condenser capacity and hyperbolic diameter

Given a compact connected set $E$ in the unit disk $\mathbb{B}^{2}$, we give a new upper bound for the conformal capacity of the condenser $(\mathbb{B}^{2}, E)$ in terms of the hyperbolic diameter $t$ of $E$. Moreover, for $t>0$, we construct a set of hyperbolic diameter $t$ and apply novel numerical methods to show that it has larger capacity than a hyperbolic disk with the same diameter. The set we construct is called a Reuleaux triangle in hyperbolic geometry and it has constant hyperbolic width equal to $t$.

Moduli of quadrilaterals and quasiconformal reflection

We study the interior and exterior moduli of polygonal quadrilaterals. The main result is a formula for a conformal mapping of the upper half plane onto the exterior of a convex polygonal quadrilateral. We prove this by a careful analysis of the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation and obtain the so-called accessory parameters and then the result in terms of the Lauricella hypergeometric function. This result enables us to understand the dissimilarities of the exterior and interior of a convex polygonal quadrilateral. We also give a Mathematica algorithm for the computation. In particular, we study the special case of an isosceles trapezoidal polygon $L$ and obtain some estimates for the coefficient of quasiconformal reflection over $L$ in terms of special functions and geometric parameters of~$L$.

Condenser capacity and hyperbolic perimeter

We study the conformal capacity by using novel computational algorithms based on implementations of the fast multipole method, and analytic techniques. Especially, we apply domain functionals to study the capacities of condensers $(G,E)$ where $G$ is a simply connected domain in the complex plane and $E$ is a compact subset of $G$. Due to conformal invariance, our main tools are the hyperbolic geometry and functionals such as the hyperbolic perimeter of $E$. Our computational experiments demonstrate, for instance, sharpness of established inequalities. In the case of model problems with known analytic solutions, very high precision of computation is observed.

Experimental error estimates are provided and, when possible, comparison to exact values or other methods are given. The main ingredients of the computation are boundary integral equations combined with the fast multipole method.
