Characterizations of John spaces

The main purpose of this paper is to study the characterizations of John spaces. We obtain five equivalence characteristics for length John spaces. As an application, we establish a dimension-free quasisymmetric invariance of length John spaces. This result is new also in the case of the Euclidean space.

Apollonian metric, uniformity and Gromov hyperbolicity

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the properties of a mapping which is required to be roughly bilipschitz with respect to the Apollonian metric (roughly Apollonian bilipschitz) of its domain. We prove that under these mappings the uniformity, $φ$-uniformity and $δ$-hyperbolicity (in the sense of Gromov with respect to quasihyperbolic metric) of proper domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ are invariant. As applications, we give four equivalent conditions for a quasiconformal mapping which is defined on a uniform domain to be roughly Apollonian bilipschitz, and we conclude that $φ$-uniformity is invariant under quasimöbius mappings.

The Ptolemy-Alhazen problem and spherical mirror reflection

An ancient optics problem of Ptolemy, studied later by Alhazen, is discussed. This problem deals with reflection of light in spherical mirrors. Mathematically this reduces to the solution of a quartic equation, which we solve and analyze using a symbolic computation software. Similar problems have been recently studied in connection with ray-tracing, catadioptric optics, scattering of electromagnetic waves, and mathematical billiards, but we were led to this problem in our study of the so-called triangular ratio metric.

Local convexity of metric balls

We study local convexity properties of the triangular ratio metric balls in proper subdomains of the real coordinate space. We also study inclusion properties of the visual angle metric balls and related hyperbolic type metric balls in the complement of the origin and the upper half space.

Volume growth of quasihyperbolic balls

The purpose of this paper is to study the notion of the quasihyperbolic volume and to find growth estimates for the quasihyperbolic volume of balls in a domain $G \subset {\mathbb R}^n\,$ in terms of the radii.

On the hyperbolic distance of $n$-times punctured spheres

The length of the shortest closed geodesic in a hyperbolic surface $X$ is called the systole of $X.$ When $X$ is an $n$-times punctured sphere $\hat{ \mathbb{C}} \setminus A$ where $A \subset \hat{\mathbb{C}}$ is a finite set of cardinality $n\ge4,$ we define a quantity $Q(A)$ in terms of cross ratios of quadruples in $A$ so that $Q(A)$ is quantitatively comparable with the systole of $X.$ We next propose a method to construct a distance function $d_X$ on a punctured sphere $X$ which is Lipschitz equivalent to the hyperbolic distance $h_X$ on $X.$ In particular, when the construction is based on a modified quasihyperbolic metric, $d_X$ is Lipschitz equivalent to $h_X$ with Lipschitz constant depending only on $Q(A).$

Geometric properties of $φ$-uniform domains

We consider proper subdomains $G$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and their images $G'=f(G)$ under quasiconformal mappings $f$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We compare the distance ratio metrics of $G$ and $G'$; as an application we show that $φ$-uniform domains are preserved under quasiconformal mappings of $\mathbb{R}^n$. A sufficient condition for $φ$-uniformity is obtained in terms of the quasi-symmetry condition. We give a geometric condition for uniformity: If $G\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is $ϕ$-uniform and satisfies the twisted cone condition, then it is uniform. We also construct a planar $ϕ$-uniform domain whose complement is not $ψ$-uniform for any $ψ$.

Comparison theorems for hyperbolic type metrics

The connection between several hyperbolic type metrics is studied in subdomains of the Euclidean space. In particular, a new metric is introduced and compared to the distance ratio metric.

The visual angle metric and quasiregular maps

The distortion of distances between points under maps is studied. We first prove a Schwarz-type lemma for quasiregular maps of the unit disk involving the visual angle metric. Then we investigate conversely the quasiconformality of a bilipschitz map with respect to the visual angle metric on convex domains. For the unit ball or half space, we prove that a bilipschitz map with respect to the visual angle metric is also bilipschitz with respect to the hyperbolic metric. We also obtain various inequalities relating the visual angle metric to other metrics such as the distance ratio metric and the quasihyperbolic metric.

Inequalities and bilipschitz conditions for triangular ratio metric

Let $G \subsetneq \mathbb{R}^n$ be a domain and let $d_1$ and $d_2$ be two metrics on $G$. We compare the geometries defined by the two metrics to each other for several pairs of metrics. The metrics we study include the distance ratio metric, the triangular ratio metric and the visual angle metric. Finally we apply our results to study Lipschitz maps with respect to these metrics.

On Quasi-inversions

Given a bounded domain $D \subset {\mathbb R}^n$ strictly starlike with respect to $0 \in D\,,$ we define a quasi-inversion w.r.t. the boundary $\partial D \,.$ We show that the quasi-inversion is bi-Lipschitz w.r.t. the chordal metric if and only if every "tangent line" of $\partial D$ is far away from the origin. Moreover, the bi-Lipschitz constant tends to $1,$ when $\partial D$ approaches the unit sphere in a suitable way. For the formulation of our results we use the concept of the $α$-tangent condition due to F. W. Gehring and J. Väisälä (Acta Math. 1965). This condition is shown to be equivalent to the bi-Lipschitz and quasiconformal extension property of what we call the polar parametrization of $\partial D$. In addition, we show that the polar parametrization, which is a mapping of the unit sphere onto $\partial D\,,$ is bi-Lipschitz if and only if $D$ satisfies the $α$-tangent condition.

Balls in the triangular ratio metric

We consider the triangular ratio metric and estimate the radius of convexity for balls in some special domains and prove the inclusion relations of metric balls defined by the triangular ratio metric, the quasihyperbolic metric and the $j$-metric.

Some remarks on the visual angle metric

We show that the visual angle metric and the triangular ratio metric are comparable in convex domains. We also find the extremal points for the visual angle metric in the half space and in the ball by use of a construction based on hyperbolic geometry. Furthermore, we study distortion properties of quasiconformal maps with respect to the triangular ratio metric and the visual angle metric.

Lipschitz conditions, triangular ratio metric, and quasiconformal maps

The triangular ratio metric is studied in subdomains of the complex plane and Euclidean $n$-space. Various inequalities are proven for it. The main results deal with the behavior of this metric under quasiconformal maps. We also study the smoothness of metric disks with small radii.

Conformal modulus on domains with strong singularities and cusps

We study the problem of computing the conformal modulus of rings and quadrilaterals with strong singularities and cusps on their boundary. We reduce this problem to the numerical solution of the associated Dirichlet and Dirichlet-Neumann type boundary values problems for the Laplace equation. Several experimental results, with error estimates, are reported. In particular, we consider domains with dendrite like boundaries, in such cases where an analytic formula for the conformal modulus can be derived. Our numerical method makes use of an $hp$-FEM algorithm, written for this very complicated geometry with strong singularities.

On isometries of conformally invariant metric

We prove that isometries in a conformally invariant metric of a general domain are quasiconformal. In the particular case of the punctured space, we prove that isometries in this metric are Mobius, thus resolving a conjecture of Ferrand, Martin and Vuorinen [FMV, p. 200] in this particular case.
