An isoperimetric characterization of a new ADM-like mass for $C^0$-asymptotically flat manifolds

We prove that the notion of mass recently introduced by Mazurowski and Yao for continuous metrics coincides with Huisken's isoperimetric mass on smooth Riemannian $3$-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature whose metric has sharp $C^0$-asymptotically flat behavior. As a consequence, we deduce a Riemannian Penrose inequality for the mass parameter of asymptotically Schwarzschildian $3$-manifolds.

Unexpected phenomena for mean curvature functionals in the Heisenberg group

The Euclidean paradigm that spheres optimize mean curvature variational problems breaks down in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group: neither the Pansu sphere nor the Korányi sphere is optimal for the variational problems associated with the Minkowski and Heintze-Karcher inequalities. Motivated by this phenomenon, we develop a variational theory for geometric problems driven by the horizontal mean curvature, focusing on the total mean curvature functional and the related Minkowski inequality, introducing suitable notions of non-characteristic stationarity and stability. We identify a new one-parameter family of rotationally invariant critical surfaces, which we call Pansu-Minkowski spheres. Among them, we show that a distinguished member, the optimal Pansu-Minkowski sphere, emerges as the unique critical point of the Minkowski quotient, and uniquely minimizes it among Pansu-Minkowski spheres. We prove non-characteristic stability and local minimality of Pansu-Minkowski spheres under rotationally invariant perturbations, while showing their instability under unrestricted perturbations.

Positive mass and isoperimetry for continuous metrics with nonnegative scalar curvature

This paper deals with quasi-local isoperimetric versions of the positive mass theorem on $3$-manifolds endowed with continuous complete metrics having nonnegative scalar curvature in a suitable weak sense. As a corollary, we derive existence results for isoperimetric sets in such low regularity setting. Our main tool is a new local version of the weak inverse mean curvature flow enjoying $C^0$-stable quantitative estimates.

On the Isoperimetric Riemannian Penrose Inequality

We prove that the Riemannian Penrose Inequality holds for Asymptotically Flat $3$-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature and connected horizon boundary, provided the optimal decay assumptions are met, which result in the $\mathrm{ADM}$ mass being a well-defined geometric invariant. Our proof builds on a novel interplay between the Hawking mass and a potential-theoretic version of it, recently introduced by Agostiniani, Oronzio and the third named author. As a consequence, we establish the equality between $\mathrm{ADM}$ mass and Huisken's Isoperimetric mass under the above sharp assumptions. Moreover, we establish a Riemannian Penrose Inequality in terms of the Isoperimetric mass on any $3$-manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature, connected horizon boundary, and which supports a well-posed notion of weak Inverse Mean Curvature Flow. In particular, such Isoperimetric Riemannian Penrose Inequality does not require the asymptotic flatness of the manifold. The argument is based on a new asymptotic comparison result involving Huisken's Isoperimetric mass and the Hawking mass.

Nonlinear Isocapacitary Concepts of Mass in 3-Manifolds with Nonnegative Scalar Curvature

We deal with suitable nonlinear versions of Jauregui's isocapacitary mass in 3-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature and compact outermost minimal boundary. These masses, which depend on a parameter $1<p\leq 2$, interpolate between Jauregui's mass $p=2$ and Huisken's isoperimetric mass, as $p \to 1^+$. We derive positive mass theorems for these masses under mild conditions at infinity, and we show that these masses do coincide with the ADM mass when the latter is defined. We finally work out a nonlinear potential theoretic proof of the Penrose inequality in the optimal asymptotic regime.

Comparison geometry for substatic manifolds and a weighted Isoperimetric Inequality

Substatic Riemannian manifolds with minimal boundary arise naturally in General Relativity as spatial slices of static spacetimes satisfying the Null Energy Condition. Moreover, they constitute a vast generalization of nonnegative Ricci curvature. In this paper we will prove various geometric results in this class, culminating in a sharp, weighted Isoperimetric inequality that quantifies the area minimizing property of the boundary. Its formulation and proof will build on a comparison theory partially stemming from a newly discovered conformal connection with $\mathrm{CD}(0, 1)$ metrics.

The equality case in the substatic Heintze-Karcher inequality

We provide a rigidity statement for the equality case for the Heintze-Karcher inequality in substatic manifolds. We apply such result in the warped product setting to fully remove assumption (H4) in the celebrated Brendle's characterization of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in warped products.

The isoperimetric problem on Riemannian manifolds via Gromov-Hausdorff asymptotic analysis

In this paper we prove the existence of isoperimetric regions of any volume in Riemannian manifolds with Ricci bounded below assuming Gromov--Hausdorff asymptoticity to the suitable simply connected model of constant sectional curvature. The previous result is a consequence of a general structure theorem for perimeter-minimizing sequences of sets of fixed volume on noncollapsed Riemannian manifolds with a lower bound on the Ricci curvature. We show that, without assuming any further hypotheses on the asymptotic geometry, all the mass and the perimeter lost at infinity, if any, are recovered by at most countably many isoperimetric regions sitting in some (possibly nonsmooth) Gromov--Hausdorff limits at infinity. The Gromov--Hausdorff asymptotic analysis allows us to recover and extend different previous existence theorems. While studying the isoperimetric problem in the smooth setting, the nonsmooth geometry naturally emerges, and thus our treatment combines techniques from both the theories.

Minkowski Inequality on complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature

In this paper we consider Riemannian manifolds of dimension at least $3$, with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean Volume Growth. For every open bounded subset with smooth boundary we establish the validity of an optimal Minkowski Inequality. We also characterise the equality case, provided the domain is strictly outward minimising and strictly mean convex. Along with the proof, we establish in full generality sharp monotonicity formulas, holding along the level sets of $p$-capacitary potentials in $p$-nonparabolic manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature.

A note on the critical Laplace Equation and Ricci curvature

We study strictly positive solutions to the critical Laplace equation \[ - Δu = n(n-2) u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}, \] decaying at most like $d(o, x)^{-(n-2)/2}$, on complete noncompact manifolds $(M, g)$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature, of dimension $n \geq 3$. We prove that, under an additional mild assumption on the volume growth, such a solution does not exist, unless $(M, g)$ is isometric to $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $u$ is a Talenti function. The method employs an elementary analysis of a suitable function defined along the level sets of $u$.

On the existence of isoperimetric regions in manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth

In this paper we provide new existence results for isoperimetric sets of large volume in Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth. We find sufficient conditions for their existence in terms of the geometry at infinity of the manifold. As a byproduct we show that isoperimetric sets of big volume always exist on manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and Euclidean volume growth. Our method combines an asymptotic mass decomposition result for minimizing sequences, a sharp isoperimetric inequality on nonsmooth spaces, and the concavity property of the isoperimetric profile. The latter is new in the generality of noncollapsed manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below.

New Integral Estimates in Substatic Riemannian Manifolds and the Alexandrov Theorem

We derive new integral estimates on substatic manifolds with boundary of horizon type, naturally arising in General Relativity. In particular, we generalize to this setting an identity due to Magnanini-Poggesi leading to the Alexandrov Theorem in the Euclidean space and improve on a Heintze-Karcher type inequality due to Li-Xia. Our method relies on the introduction of a new vector field with nonnegative divergence, generalizing to this setting the P-function technique of Weinberger.

Minimising hulls, p-capacity and isoperimetric inequality on complete Riemannian manifolds

The notion of strictly outward minimising hull is investigated for open sets of finite perimeter sitting inside a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. Under natural geometric assumptions on the ambient manifold, the strictly outward minimising hull $Ω^*$ of a set $Ω$ is characterised as a maximal volume solution of the least area problem with obstacle, where the obstacle is the set itself. In the case where $Ω$ has $\mathscr{C}^{1, α}$-boundary, the area of $\partial Ω^*$ is recovered as the limit of the $p$-capacities of $Ω$, as $p \to 1^+$. Finally, building on the existence of strictly outward minimising exhaustions, a sharp isoperimetric inequality is deduced on complete noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, provided $3 \leq n \leq 7$.

Minkowski Inequalities via Nonlinear Potential Theory

In this paper, we prove an extended version of the Minkowski Inequality, holding for any smooth bounded set $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$, $n\geq 3$. Our proof relies on the discovery of effective monotonicity formulas holding along the level set flow of the $p$-capacitary potentials associated with $Ω$, for every $p$ sufficiently close to $1$. Besides constituting a neat improvement of those introduced in [Fog_Maz_Pin] to treat the case of convex domains, these formulas testify the existence of a link between the monotonicity formulas derived by Colding and Minicozzi for the level set flow of Green's functions and the monotonicity formulas employed by Huisken, Ilmanen and several other authors in studying the geometric implications of the Inverse Mean Curvature Flow. In dimension $n\geq 8$, our conclusions are stronger than the ones obtained so far through the latter mentioned technique.
