Involutions of spherical 3-manifolds

We classify involutions acting on spherical 3-manifolds up to conjugacy. Our geometric approach provides insights into numerous topological properties of these involutions.

The 2-rank of finite groups acting on hyperelliptic 3-manifolds

We consider 3-manifolds admitting the action of an involution such that its space of orbits is homeomorphic to $S^3.$ Such involutions are called \textit{hyperelliptic} as the manifolds admitting such an action. We prove that the sectional 2-rank of a finite group acting on a 3-manifold and containing a hyperelliptic involution with fixed-point set with two components has sectional 2-rank at most four; this upper bound is sharp. The cases where the hyperelliptic involution has a fixed-point set with a number of components different from 2 have been already considered in literature. Our result completes the analysis and we obtain some general results where the number of the components of the fixed-point set is not fixed. In particular, we obtain that a finite group acting on a 3-manifold and containing a hyperelliptic involution has 2-rank at most four, and four is the best possible upper bound. Finally, we restrict to the basic case of simple groups acting on hyperelliptic 3-manifolds: we use our result about the sectional 2-rank to prove that a simple group containing a hyperelliptic involution is isomorphic to $PSL(2,q)$ for some odd prime power $q$, or to one of four other small simple groups.

The multiple fibration problem for Seifert 3-orbifolds

We conclude the multiple fibration problem for closed orientable Seifert three-orbifolds, namely the determination of all the inequivalent fibrations that such an orbifold may admit. We treat here geometric orbifolds with geometries $\mathbb R^3$ and $\mathbb S^2\times\mathbb R$ and bad orbifolds (hence non-geometric), since the only other geometry for which the multiple fibration phenomenon occurs, namely $\mathbb S^3$, has been treated before by the second and third author. For the geometry $\mathbb R^3$ we recover, by direct and geometric arguments, the computer-assisted results obtained by Conway, Delgado-Friedrichs, Huson and Thurston.

On the diffeomorphism type of Seifert fibered spherical 3-orbifolds

It is well known that, among closed spherical Seifert three-manifolds, only lens spaces and prism manifolds admit several Seifert fibrations which are not equivalent up to diffeomorphism. Moreover the former admit infinitely many fibrations, and the latter exactly two. In this work, we analyse the non-uniqueness phenomenon for orbifold Seifert fibrations. For any closed spherical Seifert three-orbifold, we determine the number of its inequivalent fibrations. When these are in a finite number (in fact, at most three) we provide a complete list. In case of infinitely many fibrations, we describe instead an algorithmic procedure to determine whether two closed spherical Seifert orbifolds are diffeomorphic.

Isometry groups and mapping class groups of spherical 3-orbifolds

We study the isometry groups of compact spherical orientable $3$-orbifolds $S^3/G$, where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{SO}(4)$, by determining their isomorphism type. Moreover, we prove that the inclusion of $\mbox{Isom}(S^3/G)$ into $\mbox{Diff}(S^3/G)$ induces an isomorphism of the $π_0$ groups, thus proving the $π_0$-part of the natural generalization of the Smale Conjecture to spherical $3$-orbifolds.

Finite groups acting on hyperelliptic 3-manifolds

We consider 3-manifolds admitting the action of an involution such that its space of orbits is homeomorphic to $S^3.$ Such involutions are called hyperelliptic as the manifolds admitting such an action. We consider finite groups acting on 3-manifolds and containing hyperelliptic involutions whose fixed-point set has $r>2$ components. In particular we prove that a simple group containing such an involution is isomorphic to $PSL(2,q)$ for some odd prime power $q$, or to one of four other small simple groups.

Finite group actions and cyclic branched covers of knots in $\mathbf{S}^3$

We show that a hyperbolic $3$-manifold can be the cyclic branched cover of at most fifteen knots in $\mathbf{S}^3$. This is a consequence of a general result about finite groups of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms acting on $3$-manifolds. A similar, although weaker, result holds for arbitrary irreducible $3$-manifolds: an irreducible $3$-manifold can be the cyclic branched cover of odd prime order of at most six knots in $\mathbf{S}^3$.

Fibered spherical 3-orbifolds

In early 1930s Seifert and Threlfall classified up to conjugacy the finite subgroups of $\mathrm{SO}(4)$, this gives an algebraic classification of orientable spherical 3-orbifolds. For the most part, spherical 3-orbifolds are Seifert fibered. The underlying topological space and singular set of non-fibered spherical 3-orbifolds were described by Dunbar. In this paper we deal with the fibered case and in particular we give explicit formulae relating the finite subgroups of $\mathrm{SO}(4)$ with the invariants of the corresponding fibered 3-orbifolds. This allows to deduce directly from the algebraic classification topological properties of spherical 3-orbifolds.

On finite groups of isometries of handlebodies in arbitrary dimensions and finite extensions of Schottky groups

It is known that the order of a finite group of diffeomorphisms of a 3-dimensional handlebody of genus g > 1 is bounded by the linear polynomial 12(g-1), and that the order of a finite group of diffeomorphisms of a 4-dimensional handlebody (or equivalently, of its boundary 3-manifold), faithful on the fundamental group, is bounded by a quadratic polynomial in g (but not by a linear one). In the present paper we prove a generalization for handlebodies of arbitrary dimension d, uniformizing handlebodies by Schottky groups and considering finite groups of isometries of such handlebodies. We prove that the order of a finite group of isometries of a handlebody of dimension d acting faithfully on the fundamental group is bounded by a polynomial of degree d/2 in g if d is even, and of degree (d+1)/2 if d is odd, and that the degree d/2 for even d is best possible. This implies then analogous polynomial Jordan-type bounds for arbitrary finite groups of isometries of handlebodies (since a handlebody of dimension d > 3 admits S^1-actions, there does not exist an upper bound for the order of the group itself ).

On quotient orbifolds of hyperbolic 3-manifolds of genus two

We analyze the orbifolds that can be obtained as quotients of hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting a Heegaard splitting of genus two by their orientation preserving isometry groups. The genus two hyperbolic 3-manifolds are exactly the hyperbolic 2-fold branched coverings of 3-bridge links. If the 3-bridge link is a knot, we prove that the underlying topological space of the quotient orbifold is either the 3-sphere or a lens space and we describe the combinatorial setting of the singular set for each possible isometry group. In the case of 3-bridge links with two or three components, the situation is more complicated and we show that the underlying topological space is the 3-sphere, a lens space or a prism manifold. Finally we present a infinite family of hyperbolic 3-manifolds that are simultaneously the 2-fold branched covering of two inequivalent knot, one with bridge number three and the other one with bridge number strictly greater than three.

On minimal finite quotients of outer automorphism groups of free groups

We prove that, for n=3 and 4, the minimal nonabelian finite factor group of the outer automorphism group Out F_n of a free group of rank n is the linear group PSL_n(Z_2) (conjecturally, this may remain true for arbitrary rank n > 2). We also discuss some computational results on low index subgroups of Aut F_n and Out F_n, for n = 3 and 4, using presentations of these groups.

On finite groups acting on acyclic low-dimensional manifolds

We consider finite groups which admit a faithful, smooth action on an acyclic manifold of dimension three, four or five (e.g. euclidean space). Our first main result states that a finite group acting on an acyclic 3- or 4-manifold is isomorphic to a subgroup of the orthogonal group O(3) or O(4), respectively. The analogue remains open in dimension five (where it is not true for arbitrary continuous actions, however). We prove that the only finite nonabelian simple groups admitting a smooth action on an acyclic 5-manifold are the alternating groups A_5 and A_6, and deduce from this a short list of finite groups, closely related to the finite subgroups of SO(5), which are the candidates for orientation-preserving actions on acyclic 5-manifolds.

On finite groups acting on homology 4-spheres and finite subgroups of SO(5)

We show that a finite group which admits a faithful, smooth, orientation-preserving action on a homology 4-sphere, and in particular on the 4-sphere, is isomorphic to a subgroup of the orthogonal group SO(5), by explicitly determining the various groups which can occur (up to an indetermination of index two in the case of solvable groups). As a consequence we obtain also a characterization of the finite groups which are isomorphic to subgroups of the orthogonal groups SO(5) and O(5).

Finite groups acting on 3-manifolds and cyclic branched coverings of knots

We are interested in finite groups acting orientation-preservingly on 3-manifolds (arbitrary actions, ie not necessarily free actions). In particular we consider finite groups which contain an involution with nonempty connected fixed point set. This condition is satisfied by the isometry group of any hyperbolic cyclic branched covering of a strongly invertible knot as well as by the isometry group of any hyperbolic 2-fold branched covering of a knot in the 3-sphere. In the paper we give a characterization of nonsolvable groups of this type. Then we consider some possible applications to the study of cyclic branched coverings of knots and of hyperelliptic diffeomorphisms of 3-manifolds. In particular we analyze the basic case of two distinct knots with the same cyclic branched covering.

On finite simple and nonsolvable groups acting on closed 4-manifolds

We show that the only finite nonabelian simple groups which admit a locally linear, homologically trivial action on a closed simply connected 4-manifold $M$ (or on a 4-manifold with trivial first homology) are the alternating groups $A_5$, $A_6$ and the linear fractional group PSL(2,7) (we note that for homologically nontrivial actions all finite groups occur). The situation depends strongly on the second Betti number $b_2(M)$ of $M$ and has been known before if $b_2(M)$ is different from two, so the main new result of the paper concerns the case $b_2(M)=2$. We prove that the only simple group that occurs in this case is $A_5$, and then give a short list of finite nonsolvable groups which contains all candidates for actions of such groups.

On finite simple and nonsolvable groups acting on homology 4-spheres

The only finite nonabelian simple group acting on a homology 3-sphere - necessarily non-freely - is the dodecahedral group $\Bbb A_5 \cong {\rm PSL}(2,5)$ (in analogy, the only finite perfect group acting freely on a homology 3-sphere is the binary dodecahedral group $\Bbb A_5^* \cong {\rm SL}(2,5)$). In the present paper we show that the only finite simple groups acting on a homology 4-sphere, and in particular on the 4-sphere, are the alternating or linear fractional groups groups $\Bbb A_5 \cong {\rm PSL}(2,5)$ and $\Bbb A_6 \cong {\rm PSL}(2,9)$. From this we deduce a short list of groups which contains all finite nonsolvable groups admitting an action on a homology 4-spheres.
