Scaling laws in decaying helical hydromagnetic turbulence

We study the evolution of growth and decay laws for the magnetic field coherence length xi, energy E_M and magnetic helicity H in freely decaying 3D MHD turbulence. We show that with certain assumptions, self-similarity of the magnetic power spectrum alone implies that xi~t^{1/2}. This in turn implies that magnetic helicity decays as H~t^{-2s}, where s=(xi_{diff}/xi_H)^2, in terms of xi_{diff}, the diffusion length scale, and xi_H, a length scale defined from the helicity power spectrum. The relative magnetic helicity remains constant, implying that the magnetic energy decays as E_M~t^{-1/2-2s}. The parameter s is inversely proportional to the magnetic Reynolds number Re_M, which is constant in the self-similar regime.

Photon-Axion mixing in an inhomogeneous universe

We consider the dimming of photons from high redshift type 1a supernovae by mixing with a pseudoscalar axion field in the intergalactic medium. We model the electron density using a lognormal probability distribution and assume frozen in magnetic fields. Assuming the magnetic fields are produced in the early universe we are unable to obtain sufficient dimming in order to explain the apparent acceleration without violating the bounds on the frequency dependence of the dimming. We also show that any axion mixing leading to a reduction in optical luminosities would also lead to a significant reduction in the polarisation of UV light from intermediate redshift objects which may be detected in the future.

Inverse cascade in decaying 3D magnetohydrodynamic turbulence

We perform direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional freely decaying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. For helical magnetic fields an inverse cascade effect is observed in which power is transfered from smaller scales to larger scales. The magnetic field reaches a scaling regime with self-similar evolution, and power law behavior at high wavenumbers. We also find power law decay in the magnetic and kinematic energies, and power law growth in the characteristic length scale of the magnetic field.

Magnetic fields in the early universe in the string approach to MHD

There is a reformulation of magnetohydrodynamics in which the fundamental dynamical quantities are the positions and velocities of the lines of magnetic flux in the plasma, which turn out to obey equations of motion very much like ideal strings. We use this approach to study the evolution of a primordial magnetic field generated during the radiation-dominated era in the early Universe. Causality dictates that the field lines form a tangled random network, and the string-like equations of motion, plus the assumption of perfect reconnection, inevitably lead to a self-similar solution for the magnetic field power spectrum. We present the predicted form of the power spectrum, and discuss insights gained from the string approximation, in particular the implications for the existence or not of an inverse cascade.
