Single-photon sources based on asymmetric spatial multiplexing with optimized inputs

We develop a statistical theory describing the operation of multiplexed single-photon sources equipped with photon-number-resolving detectors that includes the potential use of different input mean photon numbers in each of the multiplexed units. This theory accounts for all relevant loss mechanisms and allows for the maximization of the single-photon probabilities under realistic conditions by optimizing the different input mean photon numbers unit-wise and the detection strategy that can be defined in terms of actual detected photon numbers. We apply this novel description to analyze periodic single-photon sources based on asymmetric spatial multiplexing realized with general asymmetric routers. We show that optimizing the different input mean photon numbers results in maximal single-photon probabilities higher than those achieved by using optimal identical input mean photon numbers in this setup. We identify the parameter ranges of the system for which the enhancement in the single-photon probability for the various detection strategies is relevant. An additional advantage of the unit-wise optimization of the input mean photon numbers is that it can result in the decrease of the optimal system size needed to maximize the single-photon probability. We find that the highest single-photon probability that our scheme can achieve in principle when realized with state-of-the-art bulk optical elements is 0.935. This is the highest one to our knowledge that has been reported thus far in the literature for experimentally realizable single-photon sources.

Optimization of multiplexed single-photon sources operated with photon-number-resolving detectors

Detectors inherently capable of resolving photon numbers have undergone a significant development recently, and this is expected to affect multiplexed periodic single-photon sources where such detectors can find their applications. We analyze various spatially and time-multiplexed periodic single-photon source arrangements with photon-number-resolving detectors, partly to identify the cases when they outperform those with threshold detectors. We develop a full statistical description of these arrangements in order to optimize such systems with respect to maximal single-photon probability, taking into account all relevant loss mechanisms. The model is suitable for the description of all spatial and time multiplexing schemes. Our detailed analysis of symmetric spatial multiplexing identifies a particular range of loss parameters in which the use of the new type of detectors leads to an improvement. Photon number resolution opens an additional possibility for optimizing the system in that the heralding strategy can be defined in terms of actual detected photon numbers. Our results show that this kind of optimization opens an additional parameter range of improved efficiency. Moreover, this higher efficiency can be achieved by using less multiplexed units, i.e., smaller system size as compared to threshold-detector schemes. We also extend our investigation to certain time-multiplexed schemes of actual experimental relevance. We find that the highest single-photon probability is 0.907 that can be achieved by binary bulk time multiplexers using photon-number-resolving detectors.

Optimization of periodic single-photon sources based on combined multiplexing

We consider periodic single-photon sources with combined multiplexing in which the outputs of several time-multiplexed sources are spatially multiplexed. We give a full statistical description of such systems in order to optimize them with respect to maximal single-photon probability. We carry out the optimization for a particular scenario which can be realized in bulk optics and its expected performance is potentially the best at the present state of the art. We find that combined multiplexing outperforms purely spatially or time multiplexed sources for certain parameters only, and we characterize these cases. Combined multiplexing can have the advantages of possibly using less nonlinear sources, achieving higher repetition rates, and the potential applicability for continuous pumping. We estimate an achievable single-photon probability between 85% and 89%.

Receiver operation characteristics of quantum state discrimination

We provide a description of the problem of the discrimination of two quantum states in terms of receiver operation characteristics analysis, a prevalent approach in classical statistics. Receiveroperation characteristics diagrams provide an expressive representation of the problem, in which quantities such as the fidelity and the trace distance also appear explicitly. In addition we introduce an alternative quantum generalization of the classical Bhattacharyya coefficient. We evaluate our quantum Bhattacharyya coefficient for certain situations and describe some of its properties. These properties make it applicable as another possible quantifier of the similarity of quantum states.

Universal covariant quantum cloning circuits for qubit entanglement manipulation

We consider the entanglement manipulation capabilities of the universal covariant quantum cloner or quantum processor circuit for quantum bits. We investigate its use for cloning a member of a bipartite or a genuine tripartite entangled state of quantum bits. We find that for bipartite pure entangled states a nontrivial behavior of concurrence appears, while for GHZ entangled states a possibility of the partial extraction of bipartite entanglement can be achieved.

Quantum homogenization and state randomization in semi-quantal spin systems

We investigate dynamics of semi-quantal spin systems in which quantum bits are attached to classically and possibly stochastically moving classical particles. The interaction between the quantum bits takes place when the respective classical particles get close to each other in space. We find that with Heisenberg XX couplings quantum homogenization takes place after a time long enough, regardless of the details of the underlying classical dynamics. This is accompanied by the development of a stationary bipartite entanglement. If the information on the details of the motion of a stochastic classical system is disregarded, the stationary state of the whole quantum subsystem is found to be a complete mixture in the studied cases, though the transients depend on the properties of the classical motion.

Maximizing nearest neighbour entanglement in finitely correlated qubit--chains

We consider translationally invariant states of an infinite one dimensional chain of qubits or spin-1/2 particles. We maximize the entanglement shared by nearest neighbours via a variational approach based on finitely correlated states. We find an upper bound of nearest neighbour concurrence equal to C=0.434095 which is 0.09% away from the bound C_W=0.434467 obtained by a completely different procedure. The obtained state maximizing nearest neighbour entanglement seems to approximate the maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS). Further we investigate in detail several other properties of the so obtained optimal state.

Direct versus measurement assisted bipartite entanglement in multi-qubit systems and their dynamical generation in spin systems

We consider multi-qubit systems and relate quantitatively the problems of generating cluster states with high value of concurrence of assistance, and that of generating states with maximal bipartite entanglement. We prove an upper bound for the concurrence of assistance. We consider dynamics of spin-1/2 systems that model qubits, with different couplings and possible presence of magnetic field to investigate the appearance of the discussed entanglement properties. We find that states with maximal bipartite entanglement can be generated by an XY Hamiltonian, and their generation can be controlled by the initial state of one of the spins. The same Hamiltonian is capable of creating states with high concurrence of assistance with suitably chosen initial state. We show that the production of graph states using the Ising Hamiltonian is controllable via a single-qubit rotation of one spin-1/2 subsystem in the initial multi-qubit state. We shown that the property of Ising dynamics to convert a product state basis into a special maximally entangled basis is temporally enhanced by the application of a suitable magnetic field. Similar basis transformations are found to be feasible in the case of isotropic XY couplings with magnetic field.

Photon number conservation and photon interference

The group theoretical aspect of the description of passive lossless optical four-ports (beam splitters) is revisited. It is shown through an example, that this approach can be useful in understanding interferometric schemes where a low number of photons interfere. The formalism is extended to passive lossless optical six-ports, their SU(3)-theory is outlined.
