Spectral and regularity properties of an operator calculus related to Landau quantization

The theme of this work is that the theory of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field can be generalized to a large class of operators if one uses an extended a class of Weyl operators which we call "Landau--Weyl pseudodifferential operators". The link between standard Weyl calculus and Landau--Weyl calculus is made explicit by the use of an infinite family of intertwining "windowed wavepacket transforms"; this makes possible the use of the theory of modulation spaces to study various regularity properties. Our techniques allow us not only to recover easily the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian operator of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field, but also to prove global hypoellipticity results and to study the regularity of the solutions to Schroedinger equations.

How classical is the quantum universe?

We discuss two topics that are usually considered to be exclusively "quantum": the Schroedinger equation, and the uncertainty principle. We show (or rather recall) that the Schroedinger equation can be derived from Hamilton's equations using the metaplectic representation. We also show that the uncertainty principle, stated in the form of the Robertson-Schroedinger-Heisenberg inequalities can be formulated in perfectly classical terms using the topological notion of symplectic capacity.

The Multi-Dimensional Hardy Uncertainty Principle and its Interpretation in Terms of the Wigner Distribution; Relation With the Notion of Symplectic Capacity

We extend Hardy's uncertainty principle for a square integrable function and its Fourier transform to the multidimensional case using a symplectic diagonalization. We use this extension to show that Hardy's uncertainty principle is equivalent to a statement on the Wigner distribution of the function. We give a geometric interpretation of our results in terms of the notion of symplectic capacity of an ellipsoid. Furthermore, we show that Hardy's uncertainty principle is valid for a general Lagrangian frame of the phase space. Finally, we discuss an extension of Hardy's theorem for the Wigner distribution for exponentials with convex exponents.

Remarks on the Fact that the Uncertainty Principle Does Not Determine the Quantum State

We discuss the relation between density matrices and the uncertainty principle; this allows us to justify and explain a recent statement by Man'ko et al. We thereafter use Hardy's uncertainty principle to prove a new result for Wigner distributions dominated by a Gaussian and we relate this result to the coarse-graining of phase-space by "quantum blobs".

Quantum States and Hardy's Formulation of the Uncertainty Principle : a Symplectic Approach

We express the condition for a phase space Gaussian to be the Wigner distribution of a mixed quantum state in terms of the symplectic capacity of the associated Wigner ellipsoid. Our results are motivated by Hardy's formulation of the uncertainty principle for a function and its Fourier transform. As a consequence we are able to state a more general form of Hardy's theorem.

Squeezed Coherent States and a Semiclassical Propagator for the Schroedinger equation in Phase

We construct semiclassical solutions of the symplectically covariant Schroedinger phase-space equation rigorously studied in a previous paper; we use for this purpose an adaptation of Littlejohn's nearby-orbit method. We take the opportunity to discuss in some detail the so fruitful notion of squeezed coherent state and the action of the metaplectic group on these states.

On the goodness of "quantum blobs" in phase space quantization

We replace the usual notion of quantum cell from statistical mechanics by that of "quantum blob". A quantum blob is the transform, by a linaer symplectic transformation, of a phase space ball with radius equal to the square root of h-bar. The intersection of a quantum blob with any symplectic plane is an ellipse with area one half of h. This very special property, which is closed related to the principle of the symplectic camel, leads to a symplectic invariant statement of the uncertainty principle. We moreover prove that the average of a phase space Gaussian over a quantum blob is the Wigner transform of a minimum uncertainty Gaussian.

On the notion of phase in mechanics

The notion of phase plays an esential role in both classical and quantum mechanics. But what is a phase? We show that if we define the notion of phase in phase (!) space one can very easily and naturally recover the Heisenberg-Weyl formalism; this is achieved using the properties of the Poincare-Cartan invariant, and without making any quantum assumption.

A Surprising Property of Multidimensional Hamiltonian Systems; Application to Semiclassical Quantization of Phase Space

Symplectic topology has become a thriving area of research in mathematics and physics since Gromov's discovery in 1985 of a surprising property of canonical transformations (and hence of hamiltonian flows),"the principle of the symplectic camel". We exploit this property to show that the usually EBK quantization is equivalent to the physical assumption that the only allowewed semiclassical states are those with symplectic area nh+h/2. We introduce the terminology "quantum blobs" for these states. Quantum blobs are more general and powerful tools than the usual phase space cells of quantum statistics.

The "Symplectic Camel Principle" and Semiclassical Mechanics

Gromov's nonsqueezing theorem, aka the property of the symplectic camel, leads to a very simple semiclassical quantiuzation scheme by imposing that the only "physically admissible" semiclassical phase space states are those whose symplectic capacity (in a sense to be precised) is nh + (1/2)h where h is Planck's constant. We the construct semiclassical waveforms on Lagrangian submanifolds using the properties of the Leray-Maslov index, which allows us to define the argument of the square root of a de Rham form.
