Doubling for chronological diamonds in Lorentzian geometry

We define doubling conditions for measured Lorentzian length spaces in terms of chronological diamonds, and prove that such conditions are implied by suitable timelike curvature bounds. In particular, for the first time, we relate doubling to curvature bounds in Lorentzian geometry. As a consequence, we obtain compactness results for Lorentzian generalized cones with respect to the Lorentzian Gromov--Hausdorff convergence introduced by Mondino--S\"amann.

Timelike ideal boundary of non-positively curved Lorentzian spaces

We introduce the notion of timelike ideal boundary of a Lorentzian length space as the set of asymptotic classes of future or past-directed timelike geodesic rays, a construction complementary to the causal boundary in the sense of Geroch-Kronheimer-Penrose and akin to the concept of ideal boundary of a metric space. We endow such a timelike ideal boundary with a natural cone topology and an angular metric, and establish upper curvature bounds for the resulting metric space. Finally, we consider generalized cones as a model and study the relation between the timelike ideal boundary and both the metric ideal boundary of the fiber and the asymptotic behaviour of the warping function.

Convergence of Timed-Metric Spaces and Causality

We introduce the notion of timed-Gromov--Hausdorff distance for timed-metric spaces. We prove that this distance is bi-Lipschitz equivalent to the intrinsic timed-Hausdorff distance of Sakovich--Sormani, and therefore induces the same notion of convergence. We establish a compactness theorem for the timed Gromov--Hausdorff distance, obtained as a straightforward consequence of Gromov's classical compactness theorem. We then investigate the causal structure of timed-metric spaces and the stability of causality under intrinsic timed-Hausdorff convergence. We further analyze causally-null timed-metric spaces and develop several of their basic properties. As a curiosity, we include in an appendix Gromov's original proof of his compactness theorem, as presented in his paper on groups of polynomial growth.

A Splitting Theorem for non-positively curved Lorentzian spaces

We prove a splitting theorem for Lorentzian pre-length spaces with global non-positive timelike curvature. Additionally, we extend the first variation formula to spaces with any timelike curvature bound, either from above or below, and different from 0.

Gromov's Compactness Theorem for the Intrinsic Timed-Hausdorff Distance

The intrinsic timed-Hausdorff distance between timed-metric spaces, first introduced by Sakovich--Sormani, yields a weak notion of convergence for space-times. In this paper we prove a compactness theorem for the intrinsic timed-Hausdorff convergence of timed-metric spaces using timed-Fr\'echet maps. Our proof introduces the notion of "addresses" and provides a new way of stating Gromov's original compactness theorem for Gromov--Hausdorff convergence of metric spaces. We also obtain a new Arzel\`a--Ascoli theorem for real valued uniformly bounded Lipschitz functions on Gromov--Hausdorff converging compact metric spaces. Moreover, we establish the triangle inequality for the intrinsic timed-Hausdorff distance.

Metric pairs and tuples in theory and applications

We present theoretical properties of the space of metric pairs equipped with the Gromov--Hausdorff distance. First, we establish the classical metric separability and the geometric geodesicity of this space. Second, we prove an Arzel\`a--Ascoli-type theorem for metric pairs. Third, extending a result by Cassorla, we show that the set of pairs consisting of a $2$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold and a $2$-dimensional submanifold with boundary that can be isometrically embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is dense in the space of compact metric pairs. Finally, to broaden the scope of potential applications, we describe scenarios where the Gromov--Hausdorff distance between metric pairs or tuples naturally arises.

FEVER-OOD: Free Energy Vulnerability Elimination for Robust Out-of-Distribution Detection

Modern machine learning models, that excel on computer vision tasks such as classification and object detection, are often overconfident in their predictions for Out-of-Distribution (OOD) examples, resulting in unpredictable behaviour for open-set environments. Recent works have demonstrated that the free energy score is an effective measure of uncertainty for OOD detection given its close relationship to the data distribution. However, despite free energy-based methods representing a significant empirical advance in OOD detection, our theoretical analysis reveals previously unexplored and inherent vulnerabilities within the free energy score formulation such that in-distribution and OOD instances can have distinct feature representations yet identical free energy scores. This phenomenon occurs when the vector direction representing the feature space difference between the in-distribution and OOD sample lies within the null space of the last layer of a neural-based classifier. To mitigate these issues, we explore lower-dimensional feature spaces to reduce the null space footprint and introduce novel regularisation to maximize the least singular value of the final linear layer, hence enhancing inter-sample free energy separation. We refer to these techniques as Free Energy Vulnerability Elimination for Robust Out-of-Distribution Detection (FEVER-OOD). Our experiments show that FEVER-OOD techniques achieve state of the art OOD detection in Imagenet-100, with average OOD false positive rate (at 95% true positive rate) of 35.83% when used with the baseline Dream-OOD model.

Isometric Rigidity of Metric Constructions with respect to Wasserstein Spaces

In this paper we study the isometric rigidity of certain classes of metric spaces with respect to the $p$-Wasserstein space. We prove that spaces that split a separable Hilbert space are not isometrically rigid with respect to $\mathbb{P}_2$. We then prove that infinite rays are isometrically rigid with respect to $\mathbb{P}_p$ for any $p\geq 1$, whereas taking infinite half-cylinders (i.e.\ product spaces of the form $X\times [0,\infty)$) over compact non-branching geodesic spaces preserves isometric rigidity with respect to $\mathbb{P}_p$, for $p>1$. Finally, we prove that spherical suspensions over compact spaces with diameter less than $\pi/2$ are isometrically rigid with respect to $\mathbb{P}_p$, for $p>1$.

Optimal partial transport for metric pairs

In this article we study Figalli and Gigli's formulation of optimal transport between non-negative Radon measures in the setting of metric pairs. We carry over classical characterisations of optimal plans to this setting and prove that the resulting spaces of measures, $\mathcal{M}_p(X,A)$, are complete, separable and geodesic whenever the underlying space, $X$, is so. We also prove that, for $p>1$, $\mathcal{M}_p(X,A)$ preserves the property of being non-branching, and for $p=2$ it preserves non-negative curvature in the Alexandrov sense. Finally, we prove isometric embeddings of generalised spaces of persistence diagrams $\mathcal{D}_p(X,A)$ into the corresponding spaces $\mathcal{M}_p(X,A)$, generalising a result by Divol and Lacombe. As an application of this framework, we show that several known geometric properties of spaces of persistence diagrams follow from those of $\mathcal{M}_p(X,A)$, including the fact that $\mathcal{D}_2(X,A)$ is an Alexandrov space of non-negative curvature whenever $X$ is a proper non-negatively curved Alexandrov space.

Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of metric pairs and metric tuples

We study the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of metric pairs and metric tuples and prove the equivalence of different natural definitions of this concept. We also prove embedding, completeness and compactness theorems in this setting. Finally, we get a relative version of Fukaya's theorem about quotient spaces under Gromov--Hausdorff equivariant convergence and a version of Grove-Petersen--Wu's finiteness theorem for stratified spaces.

Basic Metric Geometry of the Bottleneck Distance

Given a metric pair $(X,A)$, i.e. a metric space $X$ and a distinguished closed set $A \subset X$, one may construct in a functorial way a pointed pseudometric space $\mathcal{D}_\infty(X,A)$ of persistence diagrams equipped with the bottleneck distance. We investigate the basic metric properties of the spaces $\mathcal{D}_\infty(X,A)$ and obtain characterizations of their metrizability, completeness, separability, and geodesicity.

Metric Geometry of Spaces of Persistence Diagrams

Persistence diagrams are objects that play a central role in topological data analysis. In the present article, we investigate the local and global geometric properties of spaces of persistence diagrams. In order to do this, we construct a family of functors $\mathcal{D}_p$, $1\leq p \leq\infty$, that assign, to each metric pair $(X,A)$, a pointed metric space $\mathcal{D}_p(X,A)$. Moreover, we show that $\mathcal{D}_{\infty}$ is sequentially continuous with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of metric pairs, and we prove that $\mathcal{D}_p$ preserves several useful metric properties, such as completeness and separability, for $p \in [1,\infty)$, and geodesicity and non-negative curvature in the sense of Alexandrov, for $p=2$. For the latter case, we describe the metric of the space of directions at the empty diagram. We also show that the Fr\'echet mean set of a Borel probability measure on $\mathcal{D}_p(X,A)$, $1\leq p \leq\infty$, with finite second moment and compact support is non-empty. As an application of our geometric framework, we prove that the space of Euclidean persistence diagrams, $\mathcal{D}_{p}(\mathbb{R}^{2n},\Delta_n)$, $1\leq n$ and $1\leq p<\infty$, has infinite covering, Hausdorff, asymptotic, Assouad, and Assouad-Nagata dimensions.
