Invariance principle in dynamical systems

In this survey we talk about what is known as Invariance Principle in dynamical systems. It states that the disintegration of measures with zero center Lyapunov exponents admits some extra invariance by holonomies. We focus on explaining the basic definitions and ideas behind a series of results about the Invariance Principle and give some basic applications on how this is used in dynamical systems.

Uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy for geodesic flows on surfaces

We prove that if a geodesic flow on a closed orientable $C^\infty$ surface is transitive and has positive topological entropy, then it has a unique measure of maximal entropy. This covers all previous results of the literature on the uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy in this context, as well as it applies to new examples such as the ones constructed by Donnay and Burns-Donnay. We also prove that, in the above context, there is at most one SRB measure.

Exponential mixing of measures of maximal entropy for certain skew products

We establish a relation between the continuity of the fiber entropy and the continuity of the fiber Lyapunov exponents for skew products with 2-dimensional fibers. This result extends the theorem for surfaces proved by Buzzi-Crovisier-Sarig. As a consequence, we are able to obtain classes of skew products that satisfies the strong positive recurrence (SPR) property, in particular these maps have finite number of measures of maximal entropy, all exponentially mixing with good statistical properties.

Simple Lyapunov spectrum of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms

We study the simplicity of the Lyapunov spectrum of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. We prove that a class of volume-preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms is $C^r$-accumulated by $C^2$-open sets with simple spectrum. Also we prove that a class of partially hyperbolic maps has simple spectrum generically for the measures of maximal entropy. In order to prove these results, we give a criterion for simplicity of the Lyapunov spectrum in terms of periodic points homoclinically related to the invariant measure.

Partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisims with a finite number of measures of maximal entropy

We prove the finiteness of ergodic measures of maximal entropy for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms where the center direction has a dominated decomposition into one dimensional bundle and there is a uniform lower bound for the absolute value of the Lyapunov exponents. As applications we prove finiteness for a class derived from Anosov partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms defined on $\mathbb{T}^4$ and that in a class of skew product over partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms there exists a $C^1$ open and $C^r$ dense set of diffeomorphisms with a finite number of ergodic measures of maximal entropy. We also study the upper semicontinuity of the number of measures of maximal entropy with respect to the diffeomorphism.

Measures of maximal entropy for non-uniformly hyperbolic maps

For $C^{1+}$ maps, possibly non-invertible and with singularities, we prove that each homoclinic class of an ergodic adapted hyperbolic measure carries at most one adapted hyperbolic measure of maximal entropy. We then apply this to study the finiteness/uniqueness of such measures in several different settings: finite horizon dispersing billiards, codimension one partially hyperbolic endomorphisms with ``large'' entropy, robustly non-uniformly hyperbolic volume-preserving endomorphisms as in Andersson-Carrasco-Saghin (2025), and Viana maps (1997).

Homoclinic classes of geodesic flows on rank 1 manifolds

Given a $C^{1+\beta}$ flow $\varphi$ with positive speed on a closed smooth Riemannian manifold, we code two homoclinically related $\varphi$-invariant probabilities by an irreducible countable topological Markov flow. As an application, we give proofs using symbolic dynamics of the theorem of Knieper on the uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy and theorems of Burns et al on the uniqueness of equilibrium states.

An invitation to $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ cocycles over random dynamics

The purpose of these notes is to discuss the advances in the theory of Lyapunov exponents of linear $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ cocycles over hyperbolic maps. The main focus is around results regarding the positivity of the Lyapunov exponent and the regularity of this function with respect to the underlying data.

Invariance principle and non-compact center foliations

We prove a generalization of a so called "invariance principle" for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms: if an invariant probability measure has all its center Lyapunov exponents equal to zero then the measure admits a center disintegration that is invariant by stable and unstable holonomies. This was known for systems admitting a foliation by compact center leaves, and we extend it to a larger class which contains discretized Anosov flows. We use our result to classify measures of maximal entropy and study physical measures for perturbations of the time-one map of Anosov flows.

Uniqueness of $u$-Gibbs measures for hyperbolic skew products on $\mathbb{T}^4$

We study the $u$-Gibbs measures of a certain class of uniformly hyperbolic skew products on $\mathbb{T}^4$. These systems have a strong unstable and a weak unstable directions. We show that $C^r$-dense and $C^2$-open in this set every $u$-Gibbs measure is SRB, in particular, there is only one such measure. As an application of this, we can obtain the minimality of the strong unstable foliation.

H\"older continuity of the Lyapunov exponents of linear cocycles over hyperbolic maps

Given a hyperbolic homeomorphism on a compact metric space, consider the space of linear cocycles over this base dynamics which are H\"older continuous and whose projective actions are partially hyperbolic dynamical systems. We prove that locally near any typical cocycle, the Lyapunov exponents are H\"older continuous functions relative to the uniform topology. This result is obtained as a consequence of a uniform large deviations type estimate in the space of cocycles. As a byproduct of our approach, we also establish other statistical properties for the iterates of such cocycles, namely a central limit theorem and a large deviations principle.

Symbolic dynamics for nonuniformly hyperbolic maps with singularities in high dimension

We construct Markov partitions for non-invertible and/or singular nonuniformly hyperbolic systems defined on higher dimensional Riemannian manifolds. The generality of the setup covers classical examples not treated so far, such as geodesic flows in closed manifolds, multidimensional billiard maps, and Viana maps, and includes all the recent results of the literature. We also provide a wealth of applications.

Random product of quasi-periodic cocycles

Given a finite set of quasi-periodic cocycles the random product of them is defined as the random composition according to some probability measure. We prove that the set of $C^r$, $0\leq r \leq \infty$ (or analytic) $k+1$-tuples of quasi periodic cocycles taking values in $SL_2(\mathbb{R})$ such that the random product of them has positive Lyapunov exponent contains a $C^0$ open and $C^r$ dense subset which is formed by $C^0$ continuity point of the Lyapunov exponent For $k+1$-tuples of quasi periodic cocycles taking values in $GL_d(\mathbb{R})$ for $d>2$, we prove that if one of them is diagonal, then there exists a $C^r$ dense set of such $k+1$-tuples which has simples Lyapunov spectrum and are $C^0$ continuity point of the Lyapunov exponent.

On the genericity of positive exponents of conservative skew products with two-dimensional fibers

In this paper we study the existence of positive Lyapunov exponents for three different types of skew products, whose fibers are compact Riemannian surfaces and the action on the fibers are by volume preserving diffeomorphisms. These three types include skew products with a volume preserving Anosov diffeomorphism on the basis; or with a subshift of finite type on the basis preserving a measure with product structure; or locally constant skew products with Bernoulli shifts on the basis. We prove the $C^1$-density and $C^r$-openess of the existence of positive Lyapunov exponents on a set of positive measure in the space of such skew products.

A Liv\v{s}ic theorem for matrix cocycles over non-uniformly hyperbolic systems

We prove a Liv\v{s}ic-type theorem for H\"older continuous and matrix-valued cocycles over non-uniformly hyperbolic systems. More precisely, we prove that whenever $(f,\mu)$ is a non-uniformly hyperbolic system and $A:M \to GL(d,\mathbb{R}) $ is an $\alpha$-H\"{o}lder continuous map satisfying $ A(f^{n-1}(p))\ldots A(p)=\text{Id}$ for every $p\in \text{Fix}(f^n)$ and $n\in \mathbb{N}$, there exists a measurable map $P:M\to GL(d,\mathbb{R})$ satisfying $A(x)=P(f(x))P(x)^{-1}$ for $\mu$-almost every $x\in M$. Moreover, we prove that whenever the measure $\mu$ has local product structure the transfer map $P$ is $\alpha$-H\"{o}lder continuous in sets with arbitrary large measure.

Geometric growth for Anosov maps on the $3$ torus

We prove that for Anosov maps of the $3$-torus if the Lyapunov exponents of absolutely continuous measures in every direction are equal to the geometric growth of the invariant foliations then $f$ is $C^1$ conjugated to his linear part.
