Anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction in ultra-thin epitaxial Au/Co/W(110)

We have used Brillouin Light Scattering spectroscopy to independently determine the in-plane Magneto-Crystalline Anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) in out-of-plane magnetized Au/Co/W(110). We found that the DMI strength is 2-3 times larger along the bcc$[\bar{1}10]$ than along the bcc$[001]$ direction. We use analytical considerations to illustrate the relationship between the crystal symmetry of the stack and the anisotropy of microscopic DMI. Such an anisotropic DMI is the first step to realize isolated elliptical skyrmions or anti-skyrmions in thin film systems with $C_{2v}$ symmetry.

Convergent Fabrication of a Nanoporous Two-Dimensional Carbon Network from an Aldol Condensation on Metal Surfaces

We report a convergent surface polymerization reaction scheme on Au(111), based on a triple aldol condensation, yielding a carbon-rich, covalent nanoporous two-dimensional network. The reaction is not self-poisoning and proceeds up to a full surface coverage. The deposited precursor molecules 1,3,5-tri(4'-acetylphenyl) first form supramolecular assemblies that are converted to the porous covalent network upon heating. The formation and structure of the network and of the intermediate steps are studied with scanning tunneling microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory.

Strain driven monoclinic distortion of ultrathin CoO films in CoO/Pt(001) and exchange-coupled CoO/PtFe/Pt(001) systems

The structure and strain of ultrathin CoO films grown on a Pt(001) substrate and on a ferromagnetic PtFe pseudomorphic layer on Pt(001) have been determined with insitu and real time surface x-ray diffraction. The films grow epitaxially on both surfaces with an in-plane hexagonal pattern that yields a pseudo-cubic CoO(111) surface. A refined x-ray diffraction analysis reveals a slight monoclinic distortion at RT induced by the anisotropic stress at the interface. The tetragonal contribution to the distortion results in a ratio c/a > 1, opposite to that found in the low temperature bulk CoO phase. This distortion leads to a stable Co2+ spin configuration within the plane of the film.
