Abelian supplements in almost simple groups

Let $G$ be a finite almost simple group with socle $G_0$. In this paper we prove that whenever $G/G_0$ is abelian, then there exists an abelian subgroup $A$ of $G$ such that $G=AG_0$. We propose a few applications of this structural property of almost simple groups.

Bayesian nonparametric panel Markov-switching GARCH models

This paper introduces a new model for panel data with Markov-switching GARCH effects. The model incorporates a series-specific hidden Markov chain process that drives the GARCH parameters. To cope with the high-dimensionality of the parameter space, the paper exploits the cross-sectional clustering of the series by first assuming a soft parameter pooling through a hierarchical prior distribution with two-step procedure, and then introducing clustering effects in the parameter space through a nonparametric prior distribution. The model and the proposed inference are evaluated through a simulation experiment. The results suggest that the inference is able to recover the true value of the parameters and the number of groups in each regime. An empirical application to 78 assets of the SP\&100 index from $6^{th}$ January 2000 to $3^{rd}$ October 2020 is also carried out by using a two-regime Markov switching GARCH model. The findings shows the presence of 2 and 3 clusters among the constituents in the first and second regime, respectively.

Spherical birational sheets in reductive groups

We classify the spherical birational sheets in a complex simple simply-connected algebraic group. We use the classification to show that, when $G$ is a connected reductive complex algebraic group with simply-connected derived subgroup, two conjugacy classes $\mathcal{O}_1$, $\mathcal{O}_2$ of $G$ lie in the same birational sheet, up to a shift by a central element of $G$, if and only if the coordinate rings of $\mathcal{O}_1$ and $\mathcal{O}_2$ are isomorphic as $G$-modules. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Losev for the spherical subvariety of the Lie algebra of $G$.

Local automorphisms of finite dimensional simple Lie algebras

Let ${\mathfrak g}$ be a finite dimensional simple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $0$. A linear map $φ:{\mathfrak g}\to {\mathfrak g}$ is called a local automorphism if for every $x$ in ${\mathfrak g}$ there is an automorphism $φ_x$ of ${\mathfrak g}$ such that $φ(x)=φ_x(x)$. We prove that a linear map $φ:{\mathfrak g}\to {\mathfrak g}$ is local automorphism if and only if it is an automorphism or an anti-automorphism.

On Lusztig's map for spherical unipotent conjugacy classes

We provide an alternative description of the restriction to spherical unipotent conjugacy classes, of Lusztig's map Psi from the set of unipotent conjugacy classes in a connected reductive algebraic group to the set of conjugacy classes of its Weyl group. For irreducible root systems, we analyze the image of this restricted map and we prove that a conjugacy class in a finite Weyl group has a unique maximal length element if and only if it has a maximum.

A classification of unipotent spherical conjugacy classes in bad characteristic

Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of bad characteristic. We classify the spherical unipotent conjugacy classes of G. We also show that if the characteristic of k is 2, then the fixed point subgroup of every involutorial automorphism (involution) of G is a spherical subgroup of G.

On the coordinate ring of spherical conjugacy classes

Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and X be a spherical conjugacy class of G. We determine the decomposition of the coordinate ring of X into simple G-modules.

Spherical orbits and representations of $U_ε(\mathfrak g)$

Let $U_ε(\mathfrak g)$ be the simply connected quantized enveloping algebra associated to a finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ at the roots of unity. The De Concini-Kac-Procesi conjecture on the dimension of the irreducible representations of $U_ε(\mathfrak g)$ is proved for representations corresponding to the spherical conjugacy classes of the simply connected algebraic group $G$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. We achieve this result by means of a new characterization of the spherical conjugacy classes of $G$ in terms of elements of the Weyl group.
