Large deviations for a random speed particle

We investigate large deviations for the empirical measure of the position and momentum of a particle traveling in a box with hot walls. The particle travels with uniform speed from left to right, until it hits the right boundary. Then it is absorbed and re-emitted from the left boundary with a new random speed, taken from an i.i.d. sequence. It turns out that this simple model, often used to simulate a heat bath, displays unusually complex large deviations features, that we explain in detail. In particular, if the tail of the update distribution of the speed is sufficiently oscillating, then the empirical measure does not satisfy a large deviations principle, and we exhibit optimal lower and upper large deviations functionals.

Macroscopic fluctuations theory of aerogel dynamics

We consider the thermodynamic potential describing the macroscopic fluctuation of the current and local energy of a general class of Hamiltonian models including aerogels. We argue that this potential is neither analytic nor strictly convex, a property that should be expected in general but missing from models studied in the literature. This opens the possibility of describing in terms of a thermodynamic potential non-equilibrium phase transitions in a concrete physical context. This special behaviour of the thermodynamic potential is caused by the fact that the energy current is carried by particles which may have arbitrary low speed with sufficiently large probability.

Large deviations for renewal processes

We investigate large deviations for the empirical measure of the forward and backward recurrence time processes associated with a classical renewal process with arbitrary waiting-time distribution. The Donsker-Varadhan theory cannot be applied in this case, and indeed it turns out that the large deviations rate functional differs from the one suggested by such a theory. In particular, a non-strictly convex and non-analytic rate functional is obtained.

Large deviations of the current in stochastic collisional dynamics

We consider a class of deterministic local collisional dynamics, showing how to approximate them by means of stochastic models and then studying the fluctuations of the current of energy. We show first that the variance of the time-integrated current is finite and related to the conductivity by the Green-Kubo relation. Next we show that the law of the empirical average current satisfies a large deviations principle and compute explicitly the rate functional in a suitable scaling limit. We observe that this functional is not strictly convex.

Large Deviations Principle for Stochastic Scalar Conservation Laws

We investigate large deviations for a family of conservative stochastic PDEs (conservation laws) in the asymptotic of jointly vanishing noise and viscosity. We obtain a first large deviations principle in a space of Young measures. The associated rate functional vanishes on a wide set, the so-called set of measure-valued solutions to the limiting conservation law. We therefore investigate a second order large deviations principle, thus providing a quantitative characterization of non-entropic solutions to the conservation law.

Gamma-entropy cost for scalar conservation laws

We are concerned with a control problem related to the vanishing viscosity approximation to scalar conservation laws. We investigate the $Γ$-convergence of the control cost functional, as the viscosity coefficient tends to zero. A first order $Γ$-limit is established, which characterizes the measure-valued solutions to the conservation laws as the zeros of the $Γ$-limit. A second order $Γ$-limit is then investigated, providing a characterization of entropic solutions to conservation laws as the zeros of the $Γ$-limit.
