Blind unblinding procedure for the PADME X17 data sample

The PADME experiment at the Frascati DA$Φ$NE LINAC has performed a search for the hypothetical X17 particle, with a mass of around 17 MeV, by scanning the energy of a positron beam striking a fixed target. The X17 should be produced from the resulting $e^+e^-$ annihilation. Since the expected mass of this particle is only roughly known, data sidebands cannot be clearly defined. Furthermore, the need to keep the analysis blind to potentially sizable signal contributions prevents a clear assessment even of the quality of the data sample in this search. In light of these challenges, this paper presents an innovative strategy adopted by the PADME Collaboration to perform data quality checks without disclosing the X17 sample. Moreover, the procedure designed to eventually unblind the data is described, together with the statistical approach adopted to extract the limits on the coupling between the X17 and the Standard Model.

Resonant search for the X17 boson at PADME

We discuss the experimental reach of the Frascati PADME experiment in searching for new light bosons via their resonant production in positron annihilation on fixed target atomic electrons. A scan in the mass range around 17 MeV will thoroughly probe the particle physics interpretation of the anomaly observed by the ATOMKI nuclear physics experiment. In particular, for the case of a spin-1 boson, the viable parameter space can be fully covered in a few months of data taking.

Status and Prospects of PADME

The Positron Annihilation to Dark Matter Experiment (PADME) was designed and constructed to search for dark photons ($A'$) in the process $e^+e^-\rightarrowγA'$, using the positron beam at the Beam Test Facility (BTF) at the National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF). Since the observation of an anomalous spectra in internal pair creation decays of nuclei seen by the collaboration at the ATOMKI institute, the PADME detector has been modified and a new data-taking run has been undertaken to probe the existance of the so-called ``X17" particle

Dark sector studies with the PADME experiment

The Positron Annihilation to Dark Matter Experiment (PADME) uses the positron beam of the DA$Φ$NE Beam-Test Facility, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF) to search for a Dark Photon $A'$. The search technique studies the missing mass spectrum of single-photon final states in $e^+e^-\rightarrow A'γ$ annihilation in a positron-on-thin-target experiment. This approach facilitates searches for new particles such as long lived Axion-Like-Particles, protophobic X bosons and Dark Higgs. This talk illustrated the scientific program of the experiment and its first physics results. In particular, the measurement of the cross-section of the SM process $e^+e^-\rightarrow γγ$ at $\sqrt{s}$=21 MeV was shown.

SHERPAD: test of Slow high-efficiency extraction of Positrons from a Ring At DAFNE

The idea of using fixed-target annihilations of a high-energy positron beam on a target for producing a new, very feebly interacting particle has been exploited by the PADME experiment at LNF using the extracted beam from the LINAC in the BTF facility. Extracting the beam from a synchrotron would improve by several orders of magnitude the duty-cycle of the LINAC, thus greatly extending the physics reach of such experiments. The option of substituting or complementing the standard, slow 1/3 of integer resonant extraction technique by using coherent phenomena in a bent crystal, like the channeling has been studied by the SHERPA experiment. Both using the DAFNE main positron ring or the smaller damping ring (accumulator) as pulse extender of the LINAC have been considered. We here propose to demonstrate the feasibility of this technique performing an experiment on the DAFNE positron main ring, installing in a suitable vacuum goniometer a thin Silicon crystal, bent in the (110) direction in order to provide a ~1 mrad kick, and then simulating the extraction process with a virtual septum: instead of performing a real extraction, the crossing of the gap of a septum magnet is simulated by detecting positrons at its position (at phase advance close to 1/4) by means of a Silicon pixel detector inserted in the ring, in a secondary vacuum of a Roman pot.

Invisible decays of axion-like particles: constraints and prospects

Axion-like particles (ALPs) can provide a portal to new states of a dark sector. We study the phenomenology of this portal when the ALP mainly decays invisibly, while its interaction with the standard model sector proceeds essentially via its coupling to electrons and/or photons. We re-analyse existing limits from various collider and beam dump experiments, including in particular ALP production via electron/positron interactions, in addition to the usual production through ALP-photon coupling. We further discuss the interplay between these limits and the intriguing possibility of explaining simultaneously the muon and electron magnetic moment anomalies. Finally, we illustrate the prospects of ALP searches at the LNF positron fixed-target experiment PADME, and the future reach of an upgraded experimental setup.

Searching for New Physics with multilepton events at PADME

The PADME experiment is searching for the Dark Photon $A'$ in the $e^{+}e^{-} \to γA'$ process, assuming a $A'$ decay into invisible particles. In extended Dark Sector models, a Dark Higgs $h'$ can be produced alongside $A'$ in the process $e^{+}e^{-} \to h' A'$. If the $h'$ mass is greater than twice the $A'$ mass the final state will be composed by three $e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs. Such extremely rare process is explorable by the PADME experiment, which could get a first measure and impose limits on models of physics beyond the Standard Model.

Searching for dark sectors in multi lepton final state in e+ e- collisions

Electron positron collisions are a very promising environment to search for new physics, and in particular for dark sector related observables. The most challenging experimental problem in detecting dark sector candidates is the very high associated Standard Model background. For this reason it is important to identify observables that are, at the same time, minimally suppressed in the dark sector and highly suppressed in the Standard Model. One example is the $e^+ e^-\to 3(e^+e^-)$ process that can be mediated either by the production and subsequent decay of dark Higgs ($h'$), $e^+e^-\to A'h'\to 6e$ or produced by the Standards Model process $e^+ e^-\to 3(e^+e^-)$. In the following letter we study the relative contribution to observed $e^+ e^-\to 3(e^+e^-)$ total cross section, coming from the $h'$ mediated and from the Standard Model processes in the contest of fixed target and low energy collider experiments, with particular attention to the PADME experiment at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati.

Resonant production of dark photons in positron beam dump experiments

Positrons beam dump experiments have unique features to search for very narrow resonances coupled superweakly to $e^+ e^-$ pairs. Due to the continue loss of energy from soft photon bremsstrahlung, in the first few radiation lengths of the dump a positron beam can continuously scan for resonant production of new resonances via $e^+$ annihilation off an atomic $e^-$ in the target. In the case of a dark photon $A'$ kinetically mixed with the photon, this production mode is of first order in the electromagnetic coupling $α$, and thus parametrically enhanced with respect to the $O(α^2)$ $e^+e^- \to γA'$ production mode and to the $O(α^3)$ $A'$ bremsstrahlung in $e^--$nucleon scattering so far considered. If the lifetime is sufficiently long to allow the $A'$ to exit the dump, $A' \to e^+e^-$ decays could be easily detected and distinguished from backgrounds. We explore the foreseeable sensitivity of the Frascati PADME experiment in searching with this technique for the $17\,$MeV dark photon invoked to explain the $^8$Be anomaly in nuclear transitions.

The PADME experiment at LNF

Massive photon-like particles are predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model. They have interactions similar to the photon, are vector bosons, and can be produced together with photons. The PADME experiment proposes a search for the dark photon ($A'$) in the $e^+e^- \to γA'$ process in a positron-on-target experiment, exploiting the positron beam of the DA$Φ$NE linac at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, INFN. In one year of running a sensitivity in the relative interaction strength down to $10^{-6}$ is achievable, in the mass region from 2.5 MeV $<M_{A'}<$ 22.5 MeV. The proposed experimental setup and the analysis technique is discussed.

Proposal to search for a dark photon in $e^+$ on target collisions at DA$Φ$NE linac

Photon-like particles are predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model. They have interactions similar to the photon, are vector bosons, and can be produced together with photons. The present paper proposes a search for such particles in the $ e^+e^- \to Uγ$ process in a positron-on-target experiment, exploiting the positron beam of the DA$Φ$NE linac at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, INFN. In one year of running a sensitivity in the relative interaction strength down to $\sim10^{-6}$ is achievable, in the mass region from 2.5 MeV$<M_U<$ 20 MeV. The proposed experimental setup and the analysis technique is discussed.
