Statistical mechanics of combinatorial auctions

Combinatorial auctions are formulated as frustrated lattice gases on sparse random graphs, allowing the determination of the optimal revenue by methods of statistical physics. Transitions between computationally easy and hard regimes are found and interpreted in terms of the geometric structure of the space of solutions. We introduce an iterative algorithm to solve intermediate and large instances, and discuss competing states of optimal revenue and maximal number of satisfied bidders. The algorithm can be generalized to the hard phase and to more sophisticated auction protocols.

Inverse Freezing in Mean-Field Models of Fragile Glasses

A disordered spin model suitable for studying inverse freezing in fragile glass-forming systems is introduced. The model is a microscopic realization of the ``random-first order'' scenario in which the glass transition can be either continuous or discontinuous in thermodynamic sense. The phase diagram exhibits a first-order transition line between two fluid phases terminating at a critical point. When the interacting degrees of freedom are entropically favoured an inverse static glass transition and a double inverse dynamic freezing appear.

Shear-thickening and entropy-driven reentrance

We discuss a generic mechanism for shear-thickening analogous to entropy-driven phase reentrance. We implement it in the context of non-relaxational mean-field glassy systems: although very simple, the microscopic models we study present a dynamical phase diagram with second and first order stirring-induced jamming transitions leading to intermittency, metastability and phase coexistence as seen in some experiments. The jammed state is fragile with respect to change in the stirring direction. Our approach provides a direct derivation of a Mode-Coupling theory of shear-thickening.

Geometry of Empty Space is the Key to Near-Arrest Dynamics

We study several examples of kinetically constrained lattice models using dynamically accessible volume as an order parameter. Thereby we identify two distinct regimes exhibiting dynamical slowing, with a sharp threshold between them. These regimes are identified both by a new response function in dynamically available volume, as well as directly in the dynamics. Results for the selfdiffusion constant in terms of the connected hole density are presented, and some evidence is given for scaling in the limit of dynamical arrest.

Facilitated spin models on Bethe lattice: bootstrap percolation, mode-coupling transition and glassy dynamics

We show that facilitated spin models of cooperative dynamics introduced by Fredrickson and Andersen display on Bethe lattices a glassy behaviour similar to the one predicted by the mode-coupling theory of supercooled liquids and the dynamical theory of mean-field disordered systems. At low temperature such cooperative models show a two-step relaxation and their equilibration time diverges at a finite temperature according to a power-law. The geometric nature of the dynamical arrest corresponds to a bootstrap percolation process which leads to a phase space organization similar to the one of mean-field disordered systems. The relaxation dynamics after a subcritical quench exhibits aging and converges asymptotically to the threshold states that appear at the bootstrap percolation transition.

Slow dynamics under gravity: a nonlinear diffusion model

We present an analytical and numerical study of a nonlinear diffusion model which describes density relaxation of loosely packed particles under gravity and weak random (thermal) vibration, and compare the results with Monte Carlo simulations of a lattice gas under gravity. The dynamical equation can be thought of as a local density functional theory for a class of lattice gases used to model slow relaxation of glassy and granular materials. The theory predicts a jamming transition line between a low density fluid phase and a high density glassy regime, characterized by diverging relaxation time and logarithmic or power-law compaction according to the specific form of the diffusion coefficient. In particular, we show that the model exhibits history dependent properties, such as quasi reversible-irreversible cycle and memory effects -- as observed in recent experiments, and dynamical heterogeneities.

Vortex corrections to universal scaling of magnetic fluctuations in 2D XY model

The vortex contribution to the probability density function of longitudinal magnetization fluctuations is examined in finite 2D XY systems close to the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition temperature. Within the temperature range studied their relevance is limited to rare fluctuations, where they increase the probability of events exceeding four standard deviations below the mean magnetization.

Testing the Edwards hypothesis in spin systems under tapping dynamics

The Edwards hypothesis of ergodicity of blocked configurations for gently tapped granular materials is tested for abstract models of spin systems on random graphs and spin chains with kinetic constraints. The tapping dynamics is modeled by considering two distinct mechanisms of energy injection: thermal and random tapping. We find that ergodicity depends upon the tapping procedure (i.e. the way the blocked configurations are dynamically accessed): for thermal tapping ergodicity is a good approximation, while it fails to describe the asymptotic stationary state reached by the random tapping dynamics.

Metastable configurations of spin models on random graphs

One-flip stable configurations of an Ising-model on a random graph with fluctuating connectivity are examined. In order to perform the quenched average of the number of stable configurations we introduce a global order-parameter function with two arguments. The analytical results are compared with numerical simulations.

Driven lattice glass as a ratchet and pawl machine

Boundary-induced transport in particle systems with anomalous diffusion exhibits rectification, negative resistance, and hysteresis phenomena depending on the way the drive acts on the boundary. The solvable case of a 1D system characterized by a power-law diffusion coefficient and coupled to two particles reservoirs at different chemical potential is examined. In particular, it is shown that a microscopic realisation of such a diffusion model is provided by a 3D driven lattice-gas with kinetic constraints, in which energy barriers are absent and the local microscopic reversibility holds.

Nonequilibrium Critical Dynamics of the 2D XY model

The nonequilibrium critical dynamics of the 2D XY model is investigated numerically through Monte Carlo simulations and analytically in the spin-wave approximation. We focus in particular on the behaviour of the two-time response and correlation functions and show that the ageing dynamics depends on the initial conditions. The presence of critical fluctuations leads to non-trivial violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem apparently reminiscent of the three dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin glass model. We compute for this reason the finite-size overlap probability distribution function and find that it is related to the finite-time fluctuation-dissipation ratio obtained in the out of equilibrium dynamics, provided that the temperature is not very low.

Edwards' measures: a thermodynamic construction for dense granular media and glasses

We present numerical support for the hypothesis that macroscopic observables of dense granular media can be evaluated from averages over typical blocked configurations: we construct the corresponding measure for a class of finite-dimensional systems and compare its predictions for various observables with the outcome of the out of equilibrium dynamics at large times. We discuss in detail the connection with the effective temperatures that appear in out of equilibrium glass theories, as well as the relation between our computation and those based on `inherent structure' arguments. A short version of this work has appeared in Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 5034 (2000) (cond-mat/0006140).

Kinetic glass transition

Kinetic lattice-gas models display fragile glass behavior, in spite of their trivial Gibbs-Boltzmann measure. This suggests that the nature of glass transition might be, at least in some cases, understood in purely kinetic or dynamical terms.

Fluctuations of entropy production in driven glasses

We study by Montecarlo simulation the non-equilibrium stationary behavior of a three-dimensional stochastic lattice gas with reversible kinetic constraints and in diffusive contact with two particle reservoirs at different chemical potential. When one of the boundaries is placed in the glassy phase, the statistics of entropy production fluctuations driven by the chemical potential gradient satisfy the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem provided that an effective entropy production is introduced.

Fluctuation-dissipation ratio in lattice-gas models with kinetic constraints

We investigate by Montecarlo simulation the linear response function of three dimensional structural glass models defined by short-range kinetic constraints and a trivial equilibrium Boltzmann-Gibbs measure. The breakdown of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the glassy phase follows the prediction of mean field low temperature mode-coupling theory.

Aging in a simple model of a structural glass

We consider a simple model of a structural glass, represented by a lattice gas with kinetic constraints in contact with a particle reservoir. Quench below the glass transition is represented by the jump of the chemical potential above a threshold. After a quench, the density approaches the critical density-where the diffusion coefficient of the particles vanishes-following a power law in time. In this regime, the two-time self-correlation functions exhibit aging. The behavior of the model can be understood in terms of simple mean-field arguments.

Aging in lattice-gas models with constrained dynamics

We investigate the aging behavior of lattice-gas models with constrained dynamics in which particle exchange with a reservoir is allowed. Such models provide a particularly simple interpretation of aging phenomena as a slow approach to criticality. They appear as the simplest three dimensional models exhibiting a glassy behavior similar to that of mean field (low temperature mode-coupling) models.
