Monte Carlo Simulations of Factors Influencing Seasonal Variation of Multiple Muon Events

In a 2015 study, particle physicists reported the first observed seasonal variation of multiple muon events in the MINOS Far and Near Detectors, where multiple muon events created by cosmic rays were observed to be more numerous in the winter than in the summer. This goes against the initial hypothesis of the researchers, because it has long been measured that single muon rates are higher in the summer. Using Python, I simulated three potential factors that could affect this: muon decay, altitude, and the fate of the leading pion from the first interaction. My data gives support to the conclusion that the seasonal variation is due to the geometry of the underground particle detectors and related to the higher altitude of the atmosphere in the summer.

Neutrino Physics in 2020

Many talks at the 16th Lomonosov Conference, dedicated to Bruno Pontecorvo, detail the remarkable progress in neutrino physics over the last two decades. In this paper, I give an opinionated, and therefore likely inaccurate, review of the future, with some opinions on how both the physics situation and future facilities will develop, focusing on the year 2020.

Report on the Depth Requirements for a Massive Detector at Homestake

This report provides the technical justification for locating a large detector underground in a US based Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. A large detector with a fiducial mass in the mega-ton scale will most likely be a multipurpose facility. The main physics justification for such a device is detection of accelerator generated neutrinos, nucleon decay, and natural sources of neutrinos such as solar, atmospheric and supernova neutrinos. In addition to the physics justification there are practical issues regarding the existing infrastructure at Homestake, and the stress characteristics of the Homestake rock formations. The depth requirements associated with the various physics processes are reported for water Cherenkov and liquid argon detector technologies. While some of these physics processes can be adequately studied at shallower depths, none of them require a depth greater than 4300 mwe which corresponds to the 4850 ft level at Homestake. It is very important to note that the scale of the planned detector is such that even for accelerator neutrino detection (which allows one to use the accelerator duty factor to eliminate cosmics) a minimum depth is needed to reduce risk of contamination from cosmic rays. After consideration of the science and the practical issues regarding the Homestake site, we strongly recommend that the geotechnical studies be commenced at the 4850ft level in a timely manner.

Searching for the Neutrino Mixing Angle Theta-13 at Reactors

Two neutrino mixing angles have been measured, and much of the neutrino community is turning its attention to the unmeasured mixing angle, $\quq$, whose best limit comes from the reactor neutrino experiment CHOOZ.\cite{bib:chooz} New two detector reactor neutrino experiments are being planned, along with more ambitious accelerator experiments, to measure or further limit $\quq$. Here I will overview how to measure $\quq$ using reactor neutrinos, mention some experiments that were considered and are not going forward, and review the current status of four projects: Double Chooz in France, Daya Bay in China, RENO in South Korea and Angra in Brazil. Finally I will mention how the neutrino observer can gauge progress in these projects two years from now as we approach the times corresponding to early estimates for new results.

Interpretation of the atmospheric muon charge ratio in MINOS

MINOS is the first large magnetic detector deep underground and is the first to measure the muon charge ratio with high statistics in the region near 1 TeV.\cite{bib:adamson} An approximate formula for the muon charge ratio can be expressed in terms of $ε_π$ = 115 GeV, $ε_K$ = 850 GeV and $\ec$. The implications for K production in the atmosphere will be discussed.

The Maximum Detectable Momentum for cosmic ray muons in the MINOS far detector

A magnetic detector such as MINOS which is measuring the sign of muons has to deal with issues of bending, which depend on the magnetic field configuration, and multiple scattering, which depends on the amount of material which is traversed. Above some momentum which depends on these factors, the momentum cannot be resolved. Issues related to measurement of the muon charge ratio in MINOS are discussed.

New Reactor Neutrino Experiments besides Double-CHOOZ

Several new reactor neutrino experiments are being considered to measure the parameter theta-13. The current plans for Angra, Braidwood, Daya Bay, KASKA and KR2DET are reviewed. A case is made that, together with Double-CHOOZ, a future world program should include at least three such experiments.

Megaton Water Cerenkov Detectors and Astrophysical Neutrinos

Although formal proposals have not yet been made, the UNO and Hyper-Kamiokande projects are being developed to follow-up the tremendously successful program at Super-Kamiokande using a detector that is 20-50 times larger. The potential of such a detector to continue the study of astrophysical neutrinos is considered and contrasted with the program for cubic kilometer neutrino observatories.

Detectors for New Neutrino Experiments

There has been great progress in understanding the neutrino sector in the last few years. One mixing angle has not yet been measured, theta-13. Detectors for the current round of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, for future long-baseline off-axis detectors, and for two detector experiments at nuclear reactors are reviewed.

New Projects in Underground Physics

A large fraction of neutrino research is taking place in facilities underground. In this paper, I review the underground facilities for neutrino research. I discuss ideas for future reactor experiments being considered to measure theta_13 and the UNO proton decay project.
