Time-dependent signals of new physics at the LHC

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is sensitive to signals of beyond the Standard Model physics through a variety of channels including missing energy and resonance searches. In most searches, the new physics and the Standard Model backgrounds are assumed to be invariant in time, up to systematic effects from the experiment. However, new physics with a time variation would provide an additional handle to separate signal from background. Such a time variation may come from ultralight dark matter coupling to an oscillating background field. In this paper, we consider an interaction of dark matter with quarks and an additional heavy particle, and show that the sensitivity of a search that uses timing information at the LHC can be up to a factor of two stronger compared to one that does not use time information.

The X17 with Chiral Couplings

In recent years, the ATOMKI collaboration has performed a series of measurements of excited nuclei, observing a resonant excess of electron-positron pairs at large opening angles compared to the Standard Model prediction. The excess has been hypothesized to be due to the production of a new spin-1 or spin-0 particle, X17, with a mass of about 17 MeV. Recently, the PADME experiment has reported an excess in the $e^+e^-$ cross section at center-of-mass energies near 17 MeV, perhaps further hinting at the existence of a new state. Studies of the spin-1 case have hitherto focused on either vector {\em or} axial-vector couplings to quarks and leptons, whereas UV theories more naturally produce {\em both} vector and axial-vector (\textit{i.e.} chiral) couplings, analogous to the Standard Model weak interactions. We consider the ATOMKI anomalies in the context of an $X$ with chiral couplings to quarks and explore the parameter space that can explain the ATOMKI anomalies, contrasting them with experimental constraints. We find that it is possible to accommodate the reported ATOMKI signals. However, the $99\%$ CL region is in tension with null results from searches for atomic parity violation and direct searches for new low mass physics coupled to electrons. This tension is found to be driven by the magnitude of the reported excess in the transition of $^{12}{\rm C}(17.23)$, which drives the best-fit region towards excluded couplings.

Octet scalars shaping LHC distributions in 4-jet final states

We study properties of a hypothetical scalar particle, $\Theta$, which is a color octet and an electroweak singlet. At hadron colliders, $\Theta$ is pair produced through its QCD coupling to gluons, so that its mass determines the cross section. It decays at tree level into $q\bar q$ through dimension-5 operators, and at one loop into gluons. Thus, the main LHC signature of $\Theta$ is a pair of dijets of equal invariant mass. The CMS search in this channel shows a $3.6\sigma$ excess over the QCD background for a dijet mass $M_{jj} \approx 0.95$ TeV, which can be due to $\Theta$: its production cross section (65 fb for a real scalar) and the acceptance of the CMS event selection applied to $p p \to \Theta \Theta \to \! (q \bar q)(q \bar q)$ yield a rate consistent with the excess. Furthermore, the shape of the $d\sigma/d M_{jj}$ signal is in agreement with the CMS result. Given the data-driven background fit performed by CMS, we find that a complex scalar fits better the data than a real scalar. Besides the pair of dijets, testable LHC signals include a trijet-dijet topology, a $t\bar t$ pair plus a dijet resonance, as well as final states involving a Higgs, $W$ or $Z$ boson plus jets.
