Operator semigroups in the mixed topology and the infinitesimal description of Markov processes

We define a class of not necessarily linear $C_0$-semigroups $(P_t)_{t\geq0}$ on $C_b(E)$ (more generally, on $C_κ(E):=\frac1κC_b(E)$, for some bounded function $κ$, which is the pointwise limit of a decreasing sequence of continuous functions) equipped with the mixed topology $τ_1^{\mathscr M}$ for a large class of topological state spaces $E$. If these semigroups are linear, classical theory of operator semigroups on locally convex spaces as well as the theory of bicontinuous semigroups apply to them. In particular, they are infinitesimally generated by their generator $(L,D(L))$ and thus reconstructable through an Euler formula from their strong derivative at zero in $(C_b(E),τ_1^{\mathscr M})$. In the linear case, we characterize such $(P_t)_{t\geq0}$ as integral operators given by measure kernels satisfying certain tightness properties. As a consequence, transition semigroups of Markov processes are $C_0$-semigroups on $(C_b(E),τ_1^{\mathscr M})$, if they leave $C_b(E)$ invariant and they are jointly weakly continuous in space and time. Hence, they can be reconstructed from their strong derivative at zero and thus have a fully infinitesimal description. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of a Markov core operator $(L_0,D(L_0))$ for the above generators $(L,D(L))$ and prove that uniqueness of the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equations corresponding to $(L_0,D(L_0))$ for all Dirac initial conditions implies that $(L_0,D(L_0))$ is a Markov core operator for $(L,D(L))$. If each $P_t$ is merely convex, we prove that $(P_t)_{t\geq0}$ gives rise to viscosity solutions to the Cauchy problem given by its associated (nonlinear) infinitesimal generator. We also show that value functions of optimal control problems, both, in finite and infinite dimensions are particular instances of convex $C_0$-semigroups on $(C_κ(E),τ_κ^{\mathscr M})$.

Lower semicontinuity of monotone functionals in the mixed topology on $C_b$

The main result of this paper characterizes the continuity from below of monotone functionals on the space $C_b$ of bounded continuous functions on an arbitrary Polish space as lower semicontinuity in the mixed topology. In this particular situation, the mixed topology coincides with the Mackey topology for the dual pair $(C_b,{\rm ca})$, where ${\rm ca}$ denotes the space of all countably additive signed Borel measures of finite variation. Hence, lower semicontinuity in the mixed topology of convex monotone maps $C_b\to \mathbb R$ is equivalent to a dual representation in terms of countably additive measures. Such representations are of fundamental importance in finance, e.g., in the context of risk measures and super hedging problems. Based on the main result, regularity properties of capacities and dual representations of Choquet integrals in terms of countably additive measures for $2$-alternating capacities are studied. In a second step, the paper provides a characterization of equicontinuity in the mixed topology for families of convex monotone maps. As a consequence, for every convex monotone map on $C_b$ taking values in a locally convex vector lattice, continuity in the mixed topology is equivalent to continuity on norm bounded sets.

A hypothesis test for the long-term calibration in rating systems with overlapping time windows

We present a statistical test that can be used to verify supervisory requirements concerning overlapping time windows for the long-term calibration in rating systems. In a first step, we show that the long-run default rate is approximately normally distributed with respect to random effects in default realization. We then perform a detailed analysis of the correlation effects caused by the overlapping time windows and solve the problem of an unknown distribution of default probabilities for the long-run default rate. In this context, we present several methods for a conservative calibration test that can deal with the unknown variance in the test statistic. We present a test for individual rating grades, and then pass to the portfolio level by suitably adapting the test statistic. We conclude with comparative statics analysing the effect of persisting customers and the number of customers per reference date.

Risk measures based on weak optimal transport

In this paper, we study convex risk measures with weak optimal transport penalties. In a first step, we show that these risk measures allow for an explicit representation via a nonlinear transform of the loss function. In a second step, we discuss computational aspects related to the nonlinear transform as well as approximations of the risk measures using, for example, neural networks. Our setup comprises a variety of examples, such as classical optimal transport penalties, parametric families of models, uncertainty on path spaces, moment constrains, and martingale constraints. In a last step, we show how to use the theoretical results for the numerical computation of worst-case losses in an insurance context and no-arbitrage prices of European contingent claims after quoted maturities in a model-free setting.

An axiomatic approach to default risk and model uncertainty in rating systems

In this paper, we deal with an axiomatic approach to default risk. We introduce the notion of a default risk measure, which generalizes the classical probability of default (PD), and allows to incorporate model risk in various forms. We discuss different properties and representations of default risk measures via monetary risk measures, families of related tail risk measures, and Choquet capacities. In a second step, we turn our focus on default risk measures, which are given as worst-case PDs and distorted PDs. The latter are frequently used in order to take into account model risk for the computation of capital requirements through risk-weighted assets (RWAs), as demanded by the Capital Requirement Regulation (CRR). In this context, we discuss the impact of different default risk measures and margins of conservatism on the amount of risk-weighted assets.

Wasserstein perturbations of Markovian transition semigroups

In this paper, we deal with a class of time-homogeneous continuous-time Markov processes with transition probabilities bearing a nonparametric uncertainty. The uncertainty is modeled by considering perturbations of the transition probabilities within a proximity in Wasserstein distance. As a limit over progressively finer time periods, on which the level of uncertainty scales proportionally, we obtain a convex semigroup satisfying a nonlinear PDE in a viscosity sense. A remarkable observation is that, in standard situations, the nonlinear transition operators arising from nonparametric uncertainty coincide with the ones related to parametric drift uncertainty. On the level of the generator, the uncertainty is reflected as an additive perturbation in terms of a convex functional of first order derivatives. We additionally provide sensitivity bounds for the convex semigroup relative to the reference model. The results are illustrated with Wasserstein perturbations of Lévy processes, infinite-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, geometric Brownian motions, and Koopman semigroups.

A unifying framework for submodular mean field games

We provide an abstract framework for submodular mean field games and identify verifiable sufficient conditions that allow to prove existence and approximation of strong mean field equilibria in models where data may not be continuous with respect to the measure parameter and common noise is allowed. The setting is general enough to encompass qualitatively different problems, such as mean field games for discrete time finite space Markov chains, singularly controlled and reflected diffusions, and mean field games of optimal timing. Our analysis hinges on Tarski's fixed point theorem, along with technical results on lattices of flows of probability and sub-probability measures.

Convex monotone semigroups on lattices of continuous functions

We consider convex monotone $C_0$-semigroups on a Banach lattice, which is assumed to be a Riesz subspace of a $σ$-Dedekind complete Banach lattice. Typical examples include the space of all bounded uniformly continuous functions and the space of all continuous functions vanishing at infinity. We show that the domain of the classical generator of a convex semigroup is typically not invariant. Therefore, we propose alternative versions for the domain, such as the monotone domain and the Lipschitz set, for which we prove invariance under the semigroup. As a main result, we obtain the uniqueness of the semigroup in terms of an extended version of the generator. The results are illustrated with several examples related to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations, including nonlinear versions of the shift semigroup and the heat equation. In particular, we determine their symmetric Lipschitz sets, which are invariant and allow to understand the generators in a weak sense.

Separability vs. robustness of Orlicz spaces: financial and economic perspectives

We investigate robust Orlicz spaces as a generalisation of robust $L^p$-spaces. Two constructions of such spaces are distinguished, a top-down approach and a bottom-up approach. We show that separability of robust Orlicz spaces or their subspaces has very strong implications in terms of the dominatedness of the set of priors and the lack of order completeness. Our results have subtle implications for the field of robust finance. For instance, norm closures of bounded continuous functions with respect to the worst-case $L^p$-norm, as considered in the $G$-framework, lead to spaces which are lattice isomorphic to a sublattice of a classical $L^1$-space lacking, however, any form of order completeness. We further show that the topological spanning power of options is always limited under nondominated uncertainty.

A decomposition of general premium principles into risk and deviation

We provide an axiomatic approach to general premium principles in a probability-free setting that allows for Knightian uncertainty. Every premium principle is the sum of a risk measure, as a generalization of the expected value, and a deviation measure, as a generalization of the variance. One can uniquely identify a maximal risk measure and a minimal deviation measure in such decompositions. We show how previous axiomatizations of premium principles can be embedded into our more general framework. We discuss dual representations of convex premium principles, and study the consistency of premium principles with a financial market in which insurance contracts are traded.

Upper envelopes of families of Feller semigroups and viscosity solutions to a class of nonlinear Cauchy problems

In this paper, we consider the (upper) semigroup envelope, i.e. the least upper bound, of a given family of linear Feller semigroups. We explicitly construct the semigroup envelope and show that, under suitable assumptions, it yields viscosity solutions to abstract Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-type partial differential equations related to stochastic optimal control problems arising in the field of Robust Finance. We further derive conditions for the existence of a Markov process under a nonlinear expectation related to the semigroup envelope for the case where the state space is locally compact. The procedure is then applied to numerous examples, in particular, nonlinear PDEs that arise from control problems for infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck and Lévy processes.

Convex semigroups on $L^p$-like spaces

In this paper, we investigate convex semigroups on Banach lattices with order continuous norm, having $L^p$-spaces in mind as a typical application. We show that the basic results from linear $C_0$-semigroup theory extend to the convex case. We prove that the generator of a convex $C_0$-semigroup is closed and uniquely determines the semigroup whenever the domain is dense. Moreover, the domain of the generator is invariant under the semigroup; a result that leads to the well-posedness of the related Cauchy problem. In a last step, we provide conditions for the existence and strong continuity of semigroup envelopes for families of $C_0$-semigroups. The results are discussed in several examples such as semilinear heat equations and nonlinear integro-differential equations.

Markov chains under nonlinear expectation

In this paper, we consider continuous-time Markov chains with a finite state space under nonlinear expectations. We define so-called Q-operators as an extension of Q-matrices or rate matrices to a nonlinear setup, where the nonlinearity is due to model uncertainty. The main result gives a full characterization of convex Q-operators in terms of a positive maximum principle, a dual representation by means of Q-matrices, continuous-time Markov chains under convex expectations and nonlinear ordinary differential equations. This extends a classical characterization of generators of Markov chains to the case of model uncertainty in the generator. We further derive a primal and dual representation of the convex semigroup arising from a Markov chain under a convex expectation via the Fenchel-Legendre transformation of its generator. We illustrate the results with several numerical examples, where we compute price bounds for European contingent claims under model uncertainty in terms of the rate matrix.

A note on stochastic dominance and compactness

In this work, we discuss completeness for the lattice orders of first and second order stochastic dominance. The main results state that, both, first and second order stochastic dominance induce Dedekind super complete lattices, i.e.~lattices in which every bounded nonempty subset has a countable subset with identical least upper bound and greatest lower bound. Moreover, we show that, if a suitably bounded set of probability measures is directed (e.g.~a lattice), then the supremum and infimum w.r.t.~first or second order stochastic dominance can be approximated by sequences in the weak topology or in the Wasserstein-$1$ topology, respectively. As a consequence, we are able to prove that a sublattice of probability measures is complete w.r.t.~first order stochastic dominance or second order stochastic dominance and increasing convex order if and only if it is compact in the weak topology or in the Wasserstein-$1$ topology, respectively. This complements a set of characterizations of tightness and uniform integrability, which are discussed in a preliminary section.

Submodular Mean Field Games: Existence and Approximation of Solutions

We study mean field games with scalar It{ô}-type dynamics and costs that are submodular with respect to a suitable order relation on the state and measure space. The submodularity assumption has a number of interesting consequences. Firstly, it allows us to prove existence of solutions via an application of Tarski's fixed point theorem, covering cases with discontinuous dependence on the measure variable. Secondly, it ensures that the set of solutions enjoys a lattice structure: in particular, there exist a minimal and a maximal solution. Thirdly, it guarantees that those two solutions can be obtained through a simple learning procedure based on the iterations of the best-response-map. The mean field game is first defined over ordinary stochastic controls, then extended to relaxed controls. Our approach allows also to treat a class of submodular mean field games with common noise in which the representative player at equilibrium interacts with the (conditional) mean of its state's distribution.

A semigroup approach to nonlinear Lévy processes

We study the relation between Lévy processes under nonlinear expectations, nonlinear semigroups and fully nonlinear PDEs. First, we establish a one-to-one relation between nonlinear Lévy processes and nonlinear Markovian convolution semigroups. Second, we provide a condition on a family of infinitesimal generators $(A_λ)_{λ\inΛ}$ of linear Lévy processes which guarantees the existence of a nonlinear Lévy processes such that the corresponding nonlinear Markovian convolution semigroup is a viscosity solution of the fully nonlinear PDE $\partial_t u=\sup_{λ\in Λ} A_λu$. The results are illustrated with several examples.

Regularity and asymptotic behaviour for a damped plate-membrane transmission problem

We consider a transmission problem where a structurally damped plate equation is coupled with a damped or undamped wave equation by transmission conditions. We show that exponential stability holds in the damped-damped situation and polynomial stability (but no exponential stability) holds in the damped-undamped case. Additionally, we show that the solutions first defined by the weak formulation, in fact have higher Sobolev space regularity.

Mapping properties for operator-valued pseudodifferential operators on toroidal Besov spaces

In this paper, we consider pseudodifferential operators on the torus with operator-valued symbols and prove continuity properties on vector-valued toroidal Besov spaces, without assumptions on the underlying Banach spaces. The symbols are of limited smoothness with respect to $x$ and satisfy a finite number of estimates on the discrete derivatives. The proof of the main result is based on a description of the operator as a convolution operator with a kernel representation which is related to the dyadic decomposition appearing in the definition of the Besov space.
