Dirac Observables for Gowdy Cosmologies regular at the Big Bang

Gowdy cosmologies are exact, spatially inhomogeneous solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations which describe nonlinear gravitational waves coalescing at the Big Bang singularity. With toroidal spatial sections they provenly have the Asymptotic Velocity Domination property, in that close to the Big Bang dynamical spatial gradients fade out and the dynamics is governed by a Carroll-type gravity theory. Here we construct an infinite set of Dirac observables for Gowdy cosmologies, valid off-shell, strongly, and without gauge fixing. These observables stay regular at the Big Bang and can be matched to much simpler Dirac observables of the Carroll-type gravity theory. Conversely, in an adapted foliation there is a systematic anti-Newtonian expansion (in inverse powers of the reduced Newton constant) of the full Dirac observables whose leading terms are the Carroll ones. In particular, this provides an off-shell generalization of the Asymptotic Velocity Domination property.

Asymptotic Velocity Domination in quantized polarized Gowdy Cosmologies

Asymptotic velocity domination (AVD) posits that when back-propagated to the Big Bang generic cosmological spacetimes solve a drastically simplified version of the Einstein field equations, where all dynamical spatial gradients are absent (similar as in the Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz scenario). Conversely, a solution can in principle be reconstructed from its behavior near the Big Bang. This property has been rigorously proven for the Gowdy class of cosmologies, both polarized and unpolarized. Here we establish for the polarized case a quantum version of the AVD property formulated in terms of two-point functions of (the integrands of) Dirac observables: these correlators approach their much simpler velocity dominated counterparts when the time support is back-propagated to the Big Bang. Conversely, the full correlators can be expressed as a uniformly convergent series in averaged spatial gradients of the velocity dominated ones.

Analytic semigroups approaching a Schr\"{o}dinger group on real foliated metric manifolds

On real metric manifolds admitting a co-dimension one foliation, sectorial operators are introduced that interpolate between the generalized Laplacian and the d'Alembertian. This is used to construct a one-parameter family of analytic semigroups that remains well-defined into the near Lorentzian regime. In the strict Lorentzian limit we identify a sense in which a well-defined Schr\"{o}dinger evolution group arises. For the analytic semigroups we show in addition that: (i) they act as integral operators with kernels that are jointly smooth in the semigroup time and both spacetime arguments. (ii) the diagonal of the kernels admits an asymptotic expansion in (shifted) powers of the semigroup time whose coefficients are the Seeley-DeWitt coefficients evaluated on the complex metrics.

Wick rotation in the lapse, admissible complex metrics, and foliation changing diffeomorphisms

A Wick rotation in the lapse (not in time) is introduced that interpolates between Riemannian and Lorentzian metrics on real manifolds admitting a codimension-one foliation. The definition refers to a fiducial foliation but covariance under foliation changing diffeomorphisms can be rendered explicit in a reformulation as a rank one perturbation. Applied to scalar field theories a Lorentzian signature action develops a positive imaginary part thereby identifying the underlying complex metric as ``admissible''. This admissibility is ensured in non-fiducial foliations in technically distinct ways also for the variation with respect to the metric and for the Hessian. The Hessian of the Wick rotated action is a complex combination of a generalized Laplacian and a d'Alembertian, which is shown to have spectrum contained in a wedge of the upper complex half plane. Specialized to near Minkowski space the induced propagator differs from the one with the Feynman $i\epsilon$ prescription and on Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre backgrounds the difference to a Wick rotation in time is illustrated.

States of Low Energy on Bianchi I spacetimes

States of Low Energy are a class of exact Hadamard states for free quantum fields on cosmological spacetimes whose structure is fixed at {\it all} scales by a minimization principle. The original construction was for Friedmann-Lemaître geometries and is here generalized to anisotropic Bianchi I geometries relevant to primordial cosmology. In addition to proving the Hadamard property, systematic series expansions in the infrared and ultraviolet are developed. The infrared expansion is convergent and induces in the massless case a leading spatial long distance decay that is always Minkowski-like but anisotropy modulated. The ultraviolet expansion is shown to be equivalent to the Hadamard property, and a non-recursive formula for its coefficients is presented.

The spatial Functional Renormalization Group and Hadamard states on cosmological spacetimes

A spatial variant of the Functional Renormalization Group (FRG) is introduced on (Lorentzian signature) globally hyperbolic spacetimes. Through its perturbative expansion it is argued that such a FRG must inevitably be state dependent and that it should be based on a Hadamard state. A concrete implementation is presented for scalar quantum fields on flat Friedmann-Lemaître spacetimes. The universal ultraviolet behavior of Hadamard states allows the flow to be matched to the one-loop renormalized flow (where strict removal of the ultraviolet cutoff requires a tower of potentials, one for each power of the Ricci scalar). The state-dependent infrared behavior of the flow is investigated for States of Low Energy, which are Hadamard states deemed to be viable vacua for a pre-inflationary period. A simple time-dependent infrared fixed point equation (resembling that in Minkowski space) arises for any scale factor, with analytically computable corrections coding the non-perturbative ramifications of the Hadamard property in the infrared.

Graph rules for the linked cluster expansion of the Legendre effective action

Graph rules for the linked cluster expansion of the Legendre effective action $Γ[ϕ]$ are derived and proven in $D\geq 2$ Euclidean dimensions. A key aspect is the weight assigned to articulation vertices which is itself shown to be computable from labeled tree graphs. The hopping interaction is allowed to be long ranged and scale dependent, thereby producing an in principle exact solution of $Γ[ϕ]$'s functional renormalization group equation.

On the large N expansion in hyperbolic sigma-models

Invariant correlation functions for ${\rm SO}(1,N)$ hyperbolic sigma-models are investigated. The existence of a large $N$ asymptotic expansion is proven on finite lattices of dimension $d \geq 2$. The unique saddle point configuration is characterized by a negative gap vanishing at least like 1/V with the volume. Technical difficulties compared to the compact case are bypassed using horospherical coordinates and the matrix-tree theorem.

Perturbative and nonperturbative correspondences between compact and non-compact sigma-models

Compact (ferro- and antiferromagnetic) sigma-models and noncompact (hyperbolic) sigma-models are compared in a lattice formulation in dimensions $d \geq 2$. While the ferro- and antiferromagnetic models are essentially equivalent, the qualitative difference to the noncompact models is highlighted. The perturbative and the large $N$ expansions are studied in both types of models and are argued to be asymptotic expansions on a finite lattice. An exact correspondence between the expansion coefficients of the compact and the noncompact models is established, for both expansions, valid to all orders on a finite lattice. The perturbative one involves flipping the sign of the coupling and remains valid in the termwise infinite volume limit. The large $N$ correspondence concerns the functional dependence on the free propagator and holds directly only in finite volume.

Non-amenability and spontaneous symmetry breaking -- The hyperbolic spin-chain

The hyperbolic spin chain is used to elucidate the notion of spontaneous symmetry breaking for a non-amenable internal symmetry group, here SO(1,2). The noncompact symmetry is shown to be spontaneously broken -- something which would be forbidden for a compact group by the Mermin-Wagner theorem. Expectation functionals are defined through the L \to \infty limit of a chain of length L; the functional measure is found to have its weight mostly on configurations boosted by an amount increasing at least powerlike with L. This entails that despite the non-amenability a certain subclass of noninvariant functions is averaged to an SO(1,2) invariant result. Outside this class symmetry breaking is generic. Performing an Osterwalder-Schrader reconstruction based on the infinite volume averages one finds that the reconstructed quantum theory is different from the original one. The reconstructed Hilbert space is nonseparable and contains a separable subspace of ground states of the reconstructed transfer operator on which SO(1,2) acts in a continuous, unitary and irreducible way.

Comparison of the O(3) Bootstrap $σ$-Model with the Lattice Regularization at Low Energies

The renormalized coupling $\gr$ defined through the connected 4-point function at zero external momentum in the non-linear O(3) sigma-model in two dimensions, is computed in the continuum form factor bootstrap approach with estimated error $\sim 0.3%$. New high precision data are presented for $\gr$ in the lattice regularized theory with standard action for nearly thermodynamic lattices $L/ξ\sim 7$ and correlation lengths $ξ$ up to $\sim 122$ and with the fixed point action for correlation lengths up to $\sim 12$. The agreement between the form factor and lattice results is within $\sim 1%$. We also recompute the phase shifts at low energy by measuring the two-particle energies at finite volume, a task which was previously performed by Lüscher and Wolff using the standard action, but this time using the fixed point action. Excellent agreement with the Zamolodchikov S-matrix is found.

Questionable and unquestionable in the perturbation theory of non-Abelian models

We show, by explicit computation, that bare lattice perturbation theory in the two-dimensional O(n) nonlinear $σ$ models with superinstanton boundary conditions is divergent in the limit of an infinite number of points $|Λ|$. This is the analogue of David's statement that renormalized perturbation theory of these models is infrared divergent in the limit where the physical size of the box tends to infinity. We also give arguments which support the validity of the bare perturbative expansion of short-distance quantities obtained by taking the limit $|Λ|\to\infty$ term by term in the theory with more conventional boundary conditions such as Dirichlet, periodic, and free.
