Light Strings and Strong Coupling in F-theory

We consider 4d N=1 theories arising from F-theory compactifications on elliptically-fibered Calabi-Yau four-folds and investigate the non-perturbative structure of their scalar field space beyond the large volume/large complex structure regime. We focus on regimes where the F-theory field space effectively reduces to the deformation space of the worldsheet theory of a critical string obtained from a wrapped D3-brane. In case that this critical string is a heterotic string with a simple GLSM description, we identify new strong coupling singularities in the interior of the F-theory field space. Whereas from the perturbative perspective these singularities manifest themselves through a breakdown of the perturbative $α'$-expansion, the dual GLSM perspective reveals that at the non-perturbative level these singularities correspond to loci in field space along which the worldsheet theory of the critical D3-brane string breaks down and a 7-brane gauge theory becomes strongly coupled due to quantum effects. Therefore these singularities signal a transition to a strong coupling phase in the F-theory field space which can be shown to arise due to the failure of the F-theory field space to factorize between complex structure and Kahler sector at the quantum level. Such singularities are hence a feature of a genuine N=1 theory without a direct counterpart in N=2 theories in 4d. By relating our setup to recent studies of global string solutions associated to axionic strings we argue that the D3-brane string dual to the perturbative heterotic string leaves the spectrum of BPS strings when traversing into the strong coupling phase. The absence of the perturbative, critical heterotic string then provides a physical explanation for the breakdown of the perturbative expansion and the obstruction of certain classical infinite distance limits in accordance with the Emergent String Conjecture.

Holography and the KKLT Scenario

The KKLT scenario, one of the few ideas to realize dS vacua in string theory, consists of two steps: the first involves the construction of a supersymmetric AdS vacuum with a small negative cosmological constant, and the second involves breaking supersymmetry and uplifting the energy to achieve dS. In this paper we use conventional holography to argue why it is not possible to complete the first step. We obtain this by putting a bound on the central charge of the dual theory which involves branes wrapping special Lagrangian cycles in CY 4-folds. We find that $l_{\rm AdS}^2 \lesssim χ(CY_4)$. Since $l_{\rm species}^2\gtrsim χ(CY_4)$ this leads to $l_{\rm AdS}/l_{\rm species}\lesssim 1$ leading at best to a highly curved AdS which is beyond the validity of the EFT.

The Asymptotic Weak Gravity Conjecture for Open Strings

We investigate the asymptotic Tower Weak Gravity Conjecture in weak coupling limits of open string theories with minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions, focusing for definiteness on gauge theories realized on 7-branes in F-theory. Contrary to expectations, we find that not all weak coupling limits contain an obvious candidate for a tower of states marginally satisfying the super-extremality bound. The weak coupling limits are classified geometrically in the framework of EFT string limits and their generalizations. We find three different classes of weak coupling limits, whose physics is characterized by the ratio of the magnetic weak gravity scale and the species scale. The four-dimensional Tower Weak Gravity Conjecture is satisfied by the (non-BPS) excitations of the weakly coupled EFT string only in emergent string limits, where the EFT string can be identified with a critical (heterotic) string. All other weak coupling limits lead to a decompactification either to an in general strongly coupled gauge theory coupled to gravity or to a defect gauge theory decoupling from the gravitational bulk, in agreement with the absence of an obvious candidate for a marginally super-extremal tower of states.

The Tadpole Conjecture in the Interior of Moduli Space

We revisit moduli stabilization on Calabi-Yau manifolds with a discrete symmetry. Invariant fluxes allow for a truncation to a symmetric locus in complex structure moduli space and hence drastically reduce the moduli stabilization problem in its dimensionality. This makes them an ideal testing ground for the tadpole conjecture. For a large class of fourfolds, we show that an invariant flux with non-zero on-shell superpotential on the symmetric locus necessarily stabilizes at least 60% of the complex structure moduli. In case this invariant flux induces a relatively small tadpole, it is thus possible to bypass the bound predicted by the tadpole conjecture at these special loci. As an example, we discuss a Calabi-Yau hypersurface with $h^{3,1}=3878$ and show that we can stabilize at least 4932 real moduli with a flux that induces M2-charge $N_\text{flux} =3$.

4d strings at strong coupling

Weakly coupled regions of 4d EFTs coupled to gravity are particularly suitable to describe the backreaction of BPS fundamental axionic strings, dubbed EFT strings, in a local patch of spacetime around their core. We study the extension of these local solutions to global ones, which implies probing regions of strong coupling and provides an estimate of the EFT string tension therein. We conjecture that for the EFT string charge generators such a global extension is always possible and yields a sub-Planckian tension. We substantiate this claim by analysing global solutions of 4d strings made up from NS5-branes wrapping Calabi-Yau threefold divisors in either type IIA or heterotic string theory. We argue that in this case the global, non-perturbative data of the backreaction can be simply encoded in terms of a GLSM describing the compactification, as we demonstrate in explicit examples.

Quantum Corrections in 4d N=1 Infinite Distance Limits and the Weak Gravity Conjecture

We study quantum corrections in four-dimensional theories with $N=1$ supersymmetry in the context of Quantum Gravity Conjectures. According to the Emergent String Conjecture, infinite distance limits in quantum gravity either lead to decompactification of the theory or result in a weakly coupled string theory. We verify this conjecture in the framework of $N=1$ supersymmetric F-theory compactifications to four dimensions including perturbative $α'$ as well as non-perturbative corrections. After proving uniqueness of the emergent critical string at the classical level, we show that quantum corrections obstruct precisely those limits in which the scale of the emergent critical string would lie parametrically below the Kaluza-Klein scale. Limits in which the tension of the asymptotically tensionless string sits at the Kaluza-Klein scale, by contrast, are not obstructed. In the second part of the paper we study the effect of quantum corrections for the Weak Gravity Conjecture away from the strict weak coupling limit. We propose that gauge threshold corrections and mass renormalisation effects modify the super-extremality bound in four dimensions. For the infinite distance limits in F-theory the classical super-extremality bound is generically satisfied by a sublattice of states in the tower of excitations of an emergent heterotic string. By matching the F-theory $α'$ corrections to gauge threshold corrections of the dual heterotic theory we predict how the masses of this tower must be renormalised in order for the Weak Gravity Conjecture to hold at the quantum level.

Instanton Corrections and Emergent Strings

We study limits of infinite distance in the moduli space of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ string compactifications, in which instanton effects dominate. We first consider trajectories in the hypermultiplet moduli space of type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications. We observe a correspondence between towers of D-brane instantons and D-brane 4d strings, such that the lighter the string the more relevant the instanton effects are. The dominant instantons modify the classical trajectory such that the lightest D-brane string becomes tensionless even faster, while the other strings are prevented to go below the fundamental string tension. This lightest string is dual to a fundamental type IIB string and realises the Emergent String Conjecture. We also consider the vector multiplet moduli space of type I string theory on $K3 \times T^2$ , where quantum corrections can also become significant. Naively, we only find trajectories that correspond to decompactification limits, in apparent contradiction with the picture obtained in some dual setup.

Instantons and infinite distances

We consider geodesics of infinite length and constant 4d dilaton in the (classical) hypermultiplet moduli space of type II Calabi-Yau compactifications. When approaching such infinite distance points, a large amount of D-instantons develop an exponentially suppressed action, substantially modifying the moduli space metric. We consider a particular large volume/strong coupling trajectory for which, in the corrected metric, the path length becomes finite. The instanton effects also modify the cllassical 4d dilaton such that, in order to keep the 4d Planck mass finite, the string scale has to be lowered. Our results can be related, via the c-map, to the physics around points of infinite distance in the vector multiplet moduli space where the Swampland Distance Conjecture and the Emergence Proposal have been discussed, and provide further evidence for them.

Reannihilation of self-interacting dark matter

We explore the phenomenology of having a second epoch of dark matter annihilation into dark radiation long after the standard thermal freeze-out. Such a hidden reannihilation process could affect visible sectors only gravitationally. As a concrete realization we consider self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) with a light force mediator coupled to dark radiation. We demonstrate how resonantly Sommerfeld enhanced cross sections emerge to induce the reannihilation epoch. The effect is a temporally local modification of the Hubble expansion rate and we show that the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements -- as well as other observations -- have a high sensitivity to observe this phenomenon. Special attention is given to the model region where late kinetic decoupling and strong self-interactions can alleviate several small-scale problems in the cold dark matter paradigm at the same time. Interestingly, we find that reannihilation might here also simultaneously lower the tension between CMB and low-redshift astronomical observations of $H_{0}$ and $σ_{8}$. Moreover, we identify reannihilation as a clear signature to discriminate between the phenomenologically otherwise almost identical vector and scalar mediator realizations of SIDM.

Towards the Holographic Dual of N = 2 SYK

The gravitational part of the holographic dual to the SYK model has been conjectured to be Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. In this paper we construct an AdS2 background in N = (2,2) JT gravity and show that the gravitational dynamics are - as in the N = 0 and N = 1 cases - fully captured by the extrinsic curvature as an effective boundary action. This boundary term is given by the super-Schwarzian of the N = 2 SYK model, thereby providing further evidence of the JT/SYK duality. The chirality of this SYK model is reproduced by the inherent chirality of axial N = (2,2) supergravity.
