Long-range interactions between ultracold atoms and molecules

The term "long-range interactions" refers to electrostatic and magnetostatic potential energies between atoms and molecules with mutual distances ranging from a few tens to a few hundreds Bohr radii. The involved energies are much smaller than the usual chemical bond energies. However, they are comparable with the typical kinetic energies of particles in an ultracold gas ($T\ll 1K$), so that the long-range interactions play a central role in its dynamics. The progress of research devoted to ultracold gases shed a new light on the well-established topic of long-range interactions, because: (i) the interacting atoms and molecules can be prepared in a well-defined quantum (electronic, vibrational, rotational, fine or hyper-fine), ground or excited level; and (ii) long-range interactions can be tailored at will using external electromagnetic fields. In this chapter, we present the essential concepts and mathematical relations to calculate long-range potential energies. We start with deriving the multipolar expansion of the electrostatic interaction energy between classical charge distributions, both in Cartesian coordinates for pedagogical purpose, and in spherical coordinates for practical use. Then we combine multipolar expansion and quantum perturbation theory, to obtain the general first- and second-order energy corrections, including the well-known van der Waals energy. We consider two central examples in the current context of ultracold gases: (i) a pair of alkali-metal atoms and (ii) a pair of alkali-metal heteronuclear diatomic molecules submitted to an electric field. We highlight the key role of the total angular momenta of the interacting particles and of the complex, irrespective of their electronic or nuclear, orbital or spin nature.

Optical trapping of ultracold dysprosium atoms: transition probabilities, dynamic dipole polarizabilities and van der Waals $C_6$ coefficients

The efficiency of optical trapping of ultracold atoms depend on the atomic dynamic dipole polarizability governing the atom-field interaction. In this article, we have calculated the real and imaginary parts of the dynamic dipole polarizability of dysprosium in the ground and first excited level. Due to the high electronic angular momentum of those two states, the polarizabilities possess scalar, vector and tensor contributions that we have computed, on a wide range of trapping wavelengths, using the sum-over-state formula. Using the same formalism, we have also calculated the $C_6$ coefficients characterizing the van der Waals interaction between two dysprosium atoms in the two lowest levels. We have computed the energies of excited states and the transition probabilities appearing in the sums, using a combination of \textit{ab initio} and least-square-fitting techniques provided by the Cowan codes and extended in our group. Regarding the real part of the polarizability, for field frequencies far from atomic resonances, the vector and tensor contributions are two-order-of-magnitude smaller than the scalar contribution, whereas for the imaginary part, the vector and tensor contributions represent a noticeable fraction of the scalar contribution. This offers the possibility to control the decoherence and trap losses due to spontaneous emission.

Four-body long-range interactions between ultracold weakly-bound diatomic molecules

Using the multipolar expansion of electrostatic and magnetostatic potential energies, we characterize the long-range interactions between two weakly-bound diatomic molecules, taking as an example the paramagnetic Er$_2$ Feshbach molecules which were produced recently. Since inside each molecule, individual atoms conserve their identity, the intermolecular potential energy can be expanded as the sum of pairwise atomic potential energies. In the case of Er$_2$ Feshbach molecules, we show that the interaction between atomic magnetic dipoles gives rise to the usual $R^{-3}$ term of the multipolar expansion, with $R$ the intermolecular distance, but also to additional terms scaling as $R^{-5}$, $R^{-7}$, and so on. Those terms are due to the interaction between effective molecular multipole moments, and are strongly anisotropic with respect to the orientation of the molecules. Similarly the atomic pairwise van der Waals interaction results in $R^{-6}$, $R^{-8}$, ... terms in the intermolecular potential energy. By calculating the reduced electric-quadrupole moment of erbium ground level $\langle J=6||\hat{Q}_2||J=6\rangle = -1.305$ a.u., we also demonstrate that the electric-quadrupole interaction energy is negligible with respect to the magnetic-dipole and van der Waals interaction energies. The general formalism presented in this article can be applied to calculate the long-range potential energy between arbitrary charge distributions composed of almost free subsystems.

Proposal for laser-cooling of rare-earth ions

The efficiency of laser-cooling relies on the existence of an almost closed optical-transition cycle in the energy spectrum of the considered species. In this respect rare-earth elements exhibit many transitions which are likely to induce noticeable leaks from the cooling cycle. In this work, to determine whether laser-cooling of singly-ionized erbium Er$^+$ is feasible, we have performed accurate electronic-structure calculations of energies and spontaneous-emission Einstein coefficients of Er$^+$, using a combination of \textit{ab initio} and least-square-fitting techniques. We identify five weak closed transitions suitable for laser-cooling, the broadest of which is in the kilohertz range. For the strongest transitions, by simulating the cascade dynamics of spontaneous emission, we show that repumping is necessary, and we discuss possible repumping schemes. We expect our detailed study on Er$^+$ to give a good insight into laser-cooling of neighboring ions like Dy$^+$.

Dynamics of ultracold dipolar particles in a confined geometry and tilted fields

We develop a collisional formalism adapted for the dynamics of ultracold dipolar particles in a confined geometry and in fields tilted relative to the confinement axis. Using tesseral harmonics instead of the usual spherical harmonics to expand the scattering wavefunction, we recover a good quantum number $ξ= \pm 1$ which is conserved during the collision. We derive the general expression of the dipole-dipole interaction in this convenient basis set as a function of the polar and azimuthal angles of the fields. We apply the formalism to the collision of fermionic and bosonic polar KRb molecules in a tilted electric field and in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The presence of a tilted field drastically changes the magnitude of the reactive and inelastic rates as well as the inelastic threshold properties at vanishing collision energies. Setting an appropriate strength of the confinement for the fermionic system, we show that the ultracold particles can even further reduce their kinetic energy by inelastic excitation to higher states of the confinement trap.

Theory of long-range ultracold atom-molecule photoassociation

The creation of ultracold molecules is currently limited to diatomic species. In this letter we present a theoretical description of the photoassociation of ultracold atoms and molecules to create ultracold excited triatomic molecules, thus being a novel example of light-assisted ultracold chemical reaction. The calculation of the photoassociation rate of ultracold Cs atoms with ultracold Cs$_2$ molecules in their rovibrational ground state is reported, based on the solution of the quantum dynamics involving the atom-molecule long-range interactions, and assuming a model potential for the short-range physics. The rate for the formation of excited Cs$_3$ molecules is predicted to be comparable with currently observed atom-atom photoassociation rates. We formulate an experimental proposal to observe this process relying on the available techniques of optical lattices and standard photoassociation spectroscopy.

Anisotropic optical trapping of ultracold erbium atoms

Ultracold atoms confined in a dipole trap are submitted to a potential whose depth is proportional to the real part of their dynamic dipole polarizability. The atoms also experience photon scattering whose rate is proportional to the imaginary part of their dynamic dipole polarizability. In this article we calculate the complex dynamic dipole polarizability of ground-state erbium, a rare-earth atom that was recently Bose-condensed. The polarizability is calculated with the sum-over-state formula inherent to second-order perturbation theory. The summation is performed on transition energies and transition dipole moments from ground-state erbium, which are computed using the Racah-Slater least-square fitting procedure provided by the Cowan codes. This allows us to predict 9 unobserved odd-parity energy levels of total angular momentum J=5, 6 and 7, in the range 25000-31000 cm-1 above the ground state. Regarding the trapping potential, we find that ground-state erbium essentially behaves like a spherically-symmetric atom, in spite of its large electronic angular momentum. We also find a mostly isotropic van der Waals interaction between two ground-state erbium atoms, characterized by a coefficient C_6^{iso}=1760 a.u.. On the contrary, the photon-scattering rate shows a pronounced anisotropy, since it strongly depends on the polarization of the trapping light.

Long-range interactions between polar alkali-metal diatoms in external electric fields

We computed the long-range interactions between two identical polar bialkali molecules in their rovibronic ground level, for all ten species involving Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs, using accurate quantum chemistry results combined with available spectroscopic data. Huge van der Waals interaction is found for eight species in free space. The competition of the van der Waals interaction with the dipole-dipole interaction induced by an external electric field parallel or perpendicular to the intermolecular axis is investigated by varying the electric field magnitude and the intermolecular distance. Our calculations predict a regime with the mutual orientation of the two molecules but with no preferential direction in the laboratory frame. A mechanism for the stimulated one-photon radiative association of a pair of ultracold polar molecules into ultracold tetramers is proposed, which would open the way towards the optical manipulation of ultracold polyatomic molecules.

Long-range interactions in the ozone molecule: spectroscopic and dynamical points of view

Using the multipolar expansion of the electrostatic energy, we have characterized the asymptotic interactions between an oxygen atom O$(^3P)$ and an oxygen molecule O$_2(^3Σ_g^-)$, both in their electronic ground state. We have calculated the interaction energy induced by the permanent electric quadrupoles of O and O$_2$ and the van der Waals energy. On one hand we determined the 27 electronic potential energy surfaces including spin-orbit connected to the O$(^3P)$ + O$_2(^3Σ_g^-)$ dissociation limit of the O--O$_2$ complex. On the other hand we computed the potential energy curves characterizing the interaction between O$(^3P)$ and a O$_2(^3Σ_g^-)$ molecule in its lowest vibrational level and in a low rotational level. Such curves are found adiabatic to a good approximation, namely they are only weakly coupled to each other. These results represent a first step for modeling the spectroscopy of ozone bound levels close to the dissociation limit, as well as the low energy collisions between O and O$_2$ thus complementing the knowledge relevant for the ozone formation mechanism.

Long-range interactions between ultracold atoms and molecules including atomic spin-orbit

We investigate theoretically the long-range electrostatic interactions between a ground-state homonuclear alkali-metal dimer and an excited alkali-metal atom taking into account its fine-structure. The interaction involves the combination of first-order quadrupole-quadrupole and second-order dipole-dipole effects. Depending on the considered species, the atomic spin-orbit may be comparable to the atom-molecule electrostatic energy and to the dimer rotational structure. Here we extend our general description in the framework of the second-order degenerate perturbation theory [M. Lepers and O. Dulieu, Eur. Phys. J. D, 2011] to various regimes induced by the magnitude of the atomic spin-orbit. A complex dynamics of the atom-molecule may take place at large distances, which may have consequences for the search for an universal model of ultracold inelastic collisions as proposed for instance in [Z. Idziaszek and P. S. Julienne, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 113202 (2010)].

Ultracold atom-dimer long-range interactions beyond the $1/R^{n}$ expansion

We investigate theoretically the combination of first-order quadrupole-quadrupole and second-order dipole-dipole effects on the long-range electrostatic interactions between a ground-state homonuclear alkali-metal dimer and an excited alkali-metal atom. As the electrostatic energy is comparable to the dimer rotational structure, we develop a general description of the long-range interactions which allows for couplings between the dimer rotational levels. The resulting adiabatic potential energy curves, which exhibit avoided crossings, cannot be expanded on the usual $1/R^{n}$ series. We study in details the breakdown of this approximation in the particular case Cs$_{2}+$Cs. Our results are found promising in the prospect of accomplishing the photoassociation of ultracold trimers.

Suppression of decoherence effects in the quantum kicked rotor

We describe a method allowing transient suppression of decoherence effects on the atom-optics realization of the kicked rotor. The system is prepared in an initial state with a momentum distribution concentrated in an interval much sharper than the Brillouin zone; the measure of the momentum distribution is restricted to this interval of quasimomenta: As most of the atoms undergoing decoherence processes fall outside this detection range and thus are not detected, the measured signal is effectively decoherence-free.

Tracking quasi-classical chaos in ultracold boson gases

We study the dynamics of a ultra-cold boson gas in a lattice submitted to a constant force. We track the route of the system towards chaos created by the many-body-induced nonlinearity and show that relevant information can be extracted from an experimentally accessible quantity, the gas mean position. The threshold nonlinearity for the appearance of chaotic behavior is deduced from KAM arguments and agrees with the value obtained by calculating the associated Lyapunov exponent.

Kicked rotor quantum resonances in position space

We present an approach of the kicked rotor quantum resonances in position-space, based on its analogy with the optical Talbot effect. This approach leads to a very simple picture of the physical mechanism underlying the dynamics and to analytical expressions for relevant physical quantities, such as mean momentum or kinetic energy. The ballistic behavior, which is closely associated to quantum resonances, is analyzed and shown to emerge from a coherent adding of successive kicks applied to the rotor thanks to a periodic reconstruction of the spatial wavepacket.
