Canonical quantization, path integral representations, and pseudoclassical description of massive Weyl neutrinos in external backgrounds

We study massive 1/2-spin particles in various external backgrounds keeping in mind applications to neutrino physics. We are mainly interested in massive Majorana (Weyl) fields. However, massive neutral Dirac particles are also considered. We formulate classical Lagrangian theory of the massive Weyl field in terms of Grassmann-odd two-component spinors. Then we construct the Hamiltonian formulation of such a theory, which turns out to be a theory with second-class constraints. Using this formulation we canonically quantize the massive free Weyl field. We derive propagators of the Weyl field and relate them to the propagator of a massive Dirac particle. We also study the massive Weyl particles propagating in the background mater. We find the path integral representation for the propagator of such a field, as well as the corresponding pseudoclassical particle action. The massless limit of the Weyl field interacting with the matter is considered and compared with results of other works. Finally, the path integral representation for the propagator of the neutral massive Dirac particle with an anomalous magnetic moment moving in the background matter and external electromagnetic field, as well as the corresponding pseudoclassical particle action are constructed.

Lepton asymmetry growth in the symmetric phase of an electroweak plasma with hypermagnetic fields versus its washing out by sphalerons

We study lepton asymmetry evolution in plasma of the early Universe before the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) accounting for chirality flip processes via Higgs decays (inverse decays) entering equilibrium at temperatures below T_RL ~ 10 TeV, T_EW < T < T_RL. We solve appropriate kinetic equations for leptons and Higgs bosons taking into account the lepton number violation due to Abelian anomalies for right and left electrons and neutrinos in the self-consistent hypercharge field obeying Maxwell equations modified by the contribution of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions. The violation of left lepton numbers and the corresponding violation of the baryon number due to sphaleron processes in symmetric phase is taken into account as well. Assuming the Chern-Simons wave configuration of the seed hypercharge field, we get the estimates of baryon and lepton asymmetries evolved from the primordial right electron asymmetry existing alone as partial asymmetry at T > T_RL. One finds a strong dependence of the asymmetries on the Chern-Simons wave number. We predict a nonzero chiral asymmetry Δμ= μ_e_R - μ_e_L \neq 0 in this scenario evolved down to the EWPT moment that can be used as an initial value for the Maxwellian field evolution after EWPT.

Pairing of charged particles in a quantum plasmoid

We study a quantum spherically symmetric object which is based on radial plasma oscillations. Such a plasmoid is supposed to exist in a dense plasma containing electrons, ions, and neutral particles. The method of creation and annihilation operators is applied to quantize the motion of charged particles in a self-consistent potential. We also study the effective interaction between oscillating particles owing to the exchange of a virtual acoustic wave, which is excited in the neutral component of plasma. It is shown that this interaction can be attractive and result in the formation of ion pairs. We discuss possible applications of this phenomenon in astrophysical and terrestrial plasmas.

Quantum exchange interaction of spherically symmetric plasmoids

We study nano-sized spherically symmetric plasma structures which are radial nonlinear oscillations of electrons in plasma. The effective interaction of these plasmoids via quantum exchange forces between ions is described. We calculate the energy of this interaction for the case of a dense plasma. The conditions when the exchange interaction is attractive are examined and it is shown that separate plasmoids can form a single object. The application of our results to the theoretical description of stable atmospheric plasma structures is considered.

Leptogenesis via hypermagnetic fields and baryon asymmetry

We study baryon asymmetry generation originated from the leptogenesis in the presence of hypermagnetic fields in the early Universe plasma before the electroweak phase transition (EWPT). For the simplest Chern-Simons (CS) wave configuration of hypermagnetic field we find the baryon asymmetry growth when the hypermagnetic field value changes due to alpha^2-dynamo and the lepton asymmetry rises due to the Abelian anomaly. We solve the corresponding integro-differential equations for the lepton asymmetries describing such self-consistent dynamics for lepto- and baryogenesis in the two scenarios : (i) when a primordial lepton asymmetry sits in right electrons e_R; and (ii) when, in addition to e_R, a left lepton asymmetry for e_L and nu_eL arises due to chirality flip reactions provided by inverse Higgs decays at the temperatures, T<T_RL ~ 10 TeV. We find that the baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) rises very fast through such leptogenesis, especially, in strong hypermagnetic fields. Varying (decreasing) the CS wave number parameter k_0 < 10^-7 T_EW one can recover the observable value of BAU, eta_B ~ 10^-9, where k_0 = 10^-7 T_EW corresponds to the maximum value for CS wave number surviving ohmic dissipation of hypermagnetic field. In the scenario (ii) one predicts the essential difference of the lepton numbers of right - and left electrons at EWPT time, L_eR - L_eL ~ (mu_eR - mu_eL) / T_EW = Delta mu / T_EW ~ 10^-5 that can be used as an initial condition for chiral asymmetry after EWPT.

Canonical quantization of a massive Weyl field

We construct a consistent theory of a quantum massive Weyl field. We start with the formulation of the classical field theory approach for the description of massive Weyl fields. It is demonstrated that the standard Lagrange formalism cannot be applied for the studies of massive first-quantized Weyl spinors. Nevertheless we show that the classical field theory description of massive Weyl fields can be implemented in frames of the Hamilton formalism or using the extended Lagrange formalism. Then we carry out a canonical quantization of the system. The independent ways for the quantization of a massive Weyl field are discussed. We also compare our results with the previous approaches for the treatment of massive Weyl spinors. Finally the new interpretation of the Majorana condition is proposed.

Neutrino flavor oscillations in rotating matter

We study the evolution of the neutrinos system in rotating matter. Neutrinos are supposed to be mixed massive particles interacting with background fermions by means of the electroweak forces. First we find the solutions of wave equations for the neutrino mass eigenstates in matter. Then we study the behavior of neutrino flavor eigenstates in background matter. The problems of neutrino bound states and neutrino flavor oscillations are discussed. We also derive the analog of the quantum mechanical evolution equation for the system of two flavor neutrinos in rotating matter and analyze its solution for the particular initial condition for neutrino flavor eigenstates.

Spin-flavor oscillations of Dirac neutrinos described by relativistic quantum mechanics

Spin-flavor oscillations of Dirac neutrinos in matter and a magnetic field are studied using the method of relativistic quantum mechanics. Using the exact solution of the wave equation for a massive neutrino, taking into account external fields, the effective Hamiltonian governing neutrino spin-flavor oscillations is derived. Then the The consistency of our approach with the commonly used quantum mechanical method is demonstrated. The obtained correction to the usual effective Hamiltonian results in the appearance of the new resonance in neutrino oscillations. Applications to spin-flavor neutrino oscillations in an expanding envelope of a supernova are discussed. In particular, transitions between right-polarized electron neutrinos and additional sterile neutrinos are studied for realistic background matter and magnetic field distributions. The influence of other factors such as the longitudinal magnetic field, the matter polarization, and the non-standard contributions to the neutrino effective potential, is also analyzed.

Effective attraction between oscillating electrons in a plasmoid via acoustic waves exchange

We consider the effective interaction between electrons due to the exchange of virtual acoustic waves in a low temperature plasma. Electrons are supposed to participate in rapid radial oscillations forming a spherically symmetric plasma structure. We show that under certain conditions this effective interaction can result in the attraction between oscillating electrons and can be important for the dynamics of a plasmoid. Some possible applications of the obtained results to the theory of natural long-lived plasma structures are also discussed.

Evolution of a dense neutrino gas in matter and electromagnetic field

We describe the system of massive Weyl fields propagating in a background matter and interacting with an external electromagnetic field. The interaction with an electromagnetic field is due to the presence of anomalous magnetic moments. To canonically quantize this system first we develop the classical field theory treatment of Weyl spinors in frames of the Hamilton formalism which accounts for the external fields. Then, on the basis of the exact solution of the wave equation for a massive Weyl field in a background matter we obtain the effective Hamiltonian for the description of spin-flavor oscillations of Majorana neutrinos in matter and a magnetic field. Finally, we incorporate in our analysis the neutrino self-interaction which is essential when the neutrino density is sufficiently high. We also discuss the applicability of our results for the studies of collective effects in spin-flavor oscillations of supernova neutrinos in a dense matter and a strong magnetic field.

Massive Majorana neutrinos in matter and a magnetic field

We summarize our recent results on the description of the evolution of Majorana neutrinos in external fields. First we discuss the purely quantum method which involves the secondly quantized Weyl spinors. In frames of this formalism we find exact solutions of the classical Hamilton equations for Weyl fields in background matter, which then are used to canonically quantize the system. The analog of the effective Hamiltonian for the description of spin-flavor oscillations of Majorana neutrinos in matter and a magnetic field is also obtained. Finally we discuss another approach for the treatment of Majorana neutrinos in external fields, which is based on the relativistic quantum mechanics. The latter method does not require the quantization of the neutrino wave function. Nevertheless we demonstrate that the relativistic quantum mechanics approach also appropriately describes spin-flavor oscillations of relativistic Majorana neutrinos.

Axially and spherically symmetric solitons in warm plasma

We study the existence of stable axially and spherically symmetric plasma structures on the basis of the new nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) accounting for nonlocal electron nonlinearities. The numerical solutions of NLSE having the form of spatial solitions are obtained and their stability is analyzed. We discuss the possible application of the obtained results to the theoretical description of natural plasmoids in the atmosphere.

Field theory description of neutrino oscillations

We review various field theory approaches to the description of neutrino oscillations in vacuum and external fields. First we discuss a relativistic quantum mechanics based approach which involves the temporal evolution of massive neutrinos. To describe the dynamics of the neutrinos system we use exact solutions of wave equations in presence of an external field. It allows one to exactly take into account both the characteristics of neutrinos and the properties of an external field. In particular, we examine flavor oscillations an vacuum and in background matter as well as spin flavor oscillations in matter under the influence of an external electromagnetic field. Moreover we consider the situation of hypothetical nonstandard neutrino interactions with background fermions. In the case of ultrarelativistic particles we reproduce an effective Hamiltonian which is used in the standard quantum mechanical approach for the description of neutrino oscillations. The corrections to the quantum mechanical Hamiltonian are also discussed. Then we study a spatial evolution of mixed massive neutrinos emitted by classical sources. This method seems to be more realistic since it predicts neutrino oscillations in space. Besides oscillations among different neutrino flavors, we also study transitions between particle and antiparticle states. Finally we use the quantum field theory method, which involves virtual neutrinos propagating between production and detection points, to describe particle-antiparticle transitions of Majorana neutrinos in presence of background matter.

Spin-down of neutron stars by neutrino emission

We study the spin-down of a neutron star during its early stages due to the neutrino emission. The mechanism we consider is the subsequent collisions of the produced neutrinos with the outer shells of the star. We find that this mechanism can indeed slow down the star rotation but only in the first tens of seconds of the core formation, which is when the appropriate conditions of flux and collision rate are met. We find that this mechanism can extract less than 1 % of the star angular momentum, a result which is much less than previously estimated by other authors.

Formation of bound states of electrons in spherically symmetric oscillations of plasma

We study spherically symmetric oscillations of electrons in plasma in the frame of classical electrodynamics. Firstly, we analyze the electromagnetic potentials for the system of radially oscillating charged particles. Secondly, we consider both free and forced spherically symmetric oscillations of electrons. Finally, we discuss the interaction between radially oscillating electrons through the exchange of ion acoustic waves. It is obtained that the effective potential of this interaction can be attractive and can transcend the Debye-Huckel potential. We suggest that oscillating electrons can form bound states at the initial stages of the spherical plasma structure evolution. The possible applications of the obtained results for the theory of natural plasmoids are examined.

Theoretical Studies of Long Lived Plasma Structures

We construct the model of a long lived plasma structure based on spherically symmetric oscillations of electrons in plasma. Oscillations of electrons are studied in frames of both classical and quantum approaches. We obtain the density profile of electrons and the dispersion relations for these oscillations. The differences between classical and quantum approaches are discussed. Then we study the interaction between electrons participating in spherically symmetric oscillations. We find that this interaction can be attractive and electrons can form bound states. The applications of the obtained results to the theory of natural plasmoids are considered.

Flavor oscillations of low energy neutrinos in the rotating neutron star

We study flavor oscillations of low energy neutrinos propagating in dense matter of a rotating neutron star. On the basis of the exact solutions of the wave equations for neutrinos mass eigenstates we derive the transition probability for neutrinos having big initial angular momentum. It is found that flavor oscillations of neutrinos with energies of several electron-Volts can be resonancely enhanced.
