Thermodynamics of $s_{\pm}-to-s_{++}$ transition in iron pnictides in the vicinity of the Born limit

To study thermodynamical properties of the disorder-induced transition between $s_{\pm}$ and $s_{++}$ superconducting gap functions, we calculate the grand thermodynamic potential $Ω$ in the normal and the superconducting states. Expression for the difference between the two, $ΔΩ$, is derived for a two-band model for Fe-based systems with nonmagnetic impurities. The disorder is considered in a $\mathcal{T}$-matrix approximation within the multiband Eliashberg theory. In the vicinity of the Born limit near the $s_{\pm}$-to-$s_{++}$ transition, we find two solutions obtained for opposite directions of the system's evolution with respect to the impurity scattering rate. By calculating the change in entropy $ΔS$ and the change in electronic specific heat $ΔC$ from $ΔΩ$, we show that such a hysteresis is not due to the time-reversal symmetry breaking state, but it rather points out to the first order phase transition induced by the nonmagnetic disorder. Based on the $ΔΩ$ calculations, phase diagram is plotted representing the energetically favourable $s_{\pm}$ and $s_{++}$ states and the transition between them. At finite temperature, a first order phase transition line there is limited by a critical end point. Above that point, the sharp $s_{\pm} \to s_{++}$ transition transforms to a crossover between $s_{\pm}$ and $s_{++}$ states.

Time-dependent DFT-based study of bacteriochlorophyll a optical properties within the B800 part of Rhodoblastus acidophilus light-harvesting complex

We use time-dependent density functional theory-based approaches, TD-DFT and TD-DFTB, to investigate the optical absorption of B800 part of Rhodoblastus acidophilus light-harvesting complex 2 (LH2). Both methods are shown to give qualitative agreement with experimental spectra for a single BChl a molecule and for the optimized structure of B800 complex containing nine of such molecules. We proved the absence of any sizable effects originating from the interaction between adjacent molecules, thus optical features of B800 LH2 part should not be attributed to the structural organization of pigments. In addition, time-dependent procedure itself was found to be crucial for the correct description of BChl a absorption spectrum.

Itinerant spin fluctuations in iron-based superconductors

Multiband systems, which possess a wide parameter space, allow to explore a variety of competing ground states. Bright examples are the Fe-based pnictides and chalcogenides, which demonstrate metallic, superconducting, and various magnetic phases. Here I discuss only one of the many interesting topics, namely, spin fluctuations in metallic multiband systems. I show how to calculate the effect of itinerant spin excitations on the electronic properties and formulate a theory of spin fluctuation-induced superconductivity. The superconducting state is unconventional and thus the system demonstrates unusual spin response with the spin resonance feature. I discuss its origin, consequences, and relation to experimental observations. Role of the spin-orbit coupling is specifically emphasized.

P-T phase diagram of iron arsenide superconductor NdFeAsO0.88F0.12

NdFeAsO0.88F0.12 belongs to the recently discovered family of high-TC iron-based superconductors. The influence of high pressure on transport properties of this material has been studied. Contrary to La-based compounds, we did not observe a maximum in TC under pressure. Under compression, TC drops rapidly as a linear function of pressure with the slope k = -2.8 \pm 0.1 K / GPa. The extrapolated value of TC at zero pressure is about TC (0) = 51.7 \pm 0.4 K. At pressures higher than ~18.4 GPa, the superconducting state disappears at all measured temperatures. The resistance changes slope and shows a turn-up behavior, which may be related to the Kondo effect or a weak localization of two-dimensional carriers below ~45 K that is above TC and thus competing with the superconducting phase. The behavior of the sample is completely reversible at the decompression. On the bases of our experimental data, we propose a tentative P-T phase diagram of NdFeAsO0.88F0.12.

Theory of Raman response in a superconductor with extended s-wave symmetry: Application to Fe-pnictides

We argue that Raman study of Fe-pnictides is a way to unambiguously distinguish between various superconducting gaps proposed for these materials. We show that $A_{1g}$ Raman intensity has a true resonance peak below $2Δ$ for extended s-wave superconducting gap, $Δ(\mathbf{k}) = Δ(\cos k_x + \cos k_y)/2$ in the folded Brillouin zone. No such peak emerges for a pure s-wave gap, a d-wave gap, and another extended s-wave gap with $Δ(\mathbf{k}) = Δ\cos{\frac{k_x}{2}} \cos{\frac{k_y}{2}}$ proposed by several groups.

Spin fluctuations influence on quasiparticle spectrum of realistic p-d model

In the present work the multiband p-d model for $CuO_2$-layer is treated. It was shown that for the realistic set of parameters besides Zhang-Rice two-particle singlet there is non-negligible contribution of two-particle triplet state to the top of the valence band. Also shown, that to gain quantitative agreement with experimental data the minimal approximation should include the spin fluctuations beyond the Hubbard-I scheme. Quasiparticle spectrum, obtained in this approximation, is in fairly good agreement with ARPES data on Bi2212 High-$T_c$ compound.

Electronic Properties of the Effective Singlet-Triplet Model

In present work the effective singlet-triplet model for CuO2-layer on the grounds of multiband p-d model of strongly correlated electrons is obtained. The resulting Hamiltonian has a form of generalized singlet-triplet t-t'-J model for p-type superconductors and form of usual t-t'-J model for n-type superconductors. In the mean field approximation in X-operator representation we derived equations for Gorkov type Green functions. The symmetry classification of the superconducting order parameter in case of tetragonal lattice resulted in d_{x^2-y^2}- and d_{xy}-types of singlet pairing for both p- and n-type superconductors while s-type singlet pairing don't take place. Also normal paramagnetic phase of effective singlet-triplet model was investigated and dispersion over Brillouin zone, density of states and evolution of Fermi level with doping were obtained.
