Dynamics of Skyrmion Crystals in Metallic Thin Films

We study the collective dynamics of the Skyrmion crystal (SkX) in thin films of ferromagnetic metals resulting from the nontrivial Skyrmion topology. We show that the current-driven motion of the crystal reduces the topological Hall effect and the Skyrmion trajectories bend away from the direction of the electric current (the Skyrmion Hall effect). We find a new dissipation mechanism in non-collinear spin textures that can lead to a much faster spin relaxation than Gilbert damping, calculate the dispersion of phonons in the SkX, and discuss effects of impurity pinning of Skyrmions.

Solitonic lattice and Yukawa forces in the rare earth orthoferrite TbFeO3

The control of domains in ferroic devices lies at the heart of their potential for technological applications. Multiferroic materials offer another level of complexity as domains can be either or both of a ferroelectric and magnetic nature. Here we report the discovery of a novel magnetic state in the orthoferrite TbFeO3 using neutron diffraction under an applied magnetic field. This state has a very long incommensurate period ranging from 340 Angstrom at 3K to 2700 Angstrom at the lowest temperatures and exhibits an anomalously large number of higher-order harmonics, allowing us to identify it with the periodic array of sharp domain walls of Tb spins separated by many lattice constants. The Tb domain walls interact by exchanging spin waves propagating through the Fe magnetic sublattice. The resulting Yukawa-like force, familiar from particle physics, has a finite range that determines the period of the incommensurate state.

Theory of electric polarization in multi-orbital Mott insulators

The interaction between the electric field, E, and spins in multi-orbital Mott insulators is studied theoretically. We find a generic dynamical coupling mechanism, which works for all crystal lattices and which does not involve relativistic effects. The general form of the coupling is -T_ab E_a e_b, where e is the `internal' electric field originating from the dynamical Berry phase of electrons and T_ab is a tensor determined by lattice symmetry. We discuss several effects of this interaction: (i) an unusual electron spin resonance induced by an oscillating electric field, (ii) the displacement of spin textures in an applied electric field, and (iii) the resonant absorption of circularly polarized light by Skyrmions, magnetic bubbles, and magnetic vortices.

Microscopic theory of temperature-dependent magnetoelectric effect in Cr2O3

We calculate the temperature-dependent magnetoelectric response of Cr2O3 from first principles. The form of the dominant magnetoelectric coupling is determined using symmetry arguments, its strength is found using ab initio methods, and the temperature dependence of the response is obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. The quantitative agreement of our results with experiment shows that the strong temperature dependence of the magnetoelectric effect in Cr2O3 results from non-relativistic exchange interactions and spin fluctuations.

Clamping of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic domain walls in conical spiral magnets

We study the structure of domain walls in multiferroic magnets with the conical spiral ordering. We formulate a simple spin model which has a conical spiral ground state in absence of magnetic anisotropies. We find a transition from the regime where ferromagnetic and ferroelectric domain walls are clamped to the regime where they are decoupled and derive a continuum model describing rotation of the spiral plane at the domain wall. The importance of these results for the switching phenomena observed in CoCr2O4 is discussed.

Superexchange-Driven Magnetoelectricity in Magnetic Vortices

We demonstrate that magnetic vortices in which spins are coupled to polar lattice distortions via superexchange exhibit an unusually large linear magnetoelectric response. We show that the periodic arrays of vortices formed by frustrated spins on Kagomé lattices provide a realization of this concept; our {\it ab initio} calculations for such a model structure yield a magnetoelectric coefficient that is 30 times larger than that of prototypical single phase magnetoelectrics. Finally, we identify the design rules required to obtain such a response in a practical material.

Reply to Comment of Kenzelmann and Harris

In response to the comment of Kenzelmann and Harris I show how the continuum theory of spiral multiferroics can be modified to describe general magnetic orders and discuss why the microscopic mechanism of magnetically-induced ferroelectricity usually makes such modifications unnecessary. This explains why the simple model with a single vector order parameter successfully describes thermodynamics and magnetoelectric properties of many spiral multiferroics.

Ferroelectricity in spiral magnets

It was recently observed that materials showing most striking multiferroic phenomena are frustrated spin-density-wave magnets. We present a simple phenomenological theory, which describes the orientation of the induced electric polarization for various incommensurate magnetic states, its dependence on temperature and magnetic field, and anomalies of dielectric susceptibility at magnetic transitions. We show that electric polarization can be induced at domain walls and that magnetic vortices carry electric charge.

Helicoidal ordering in iron perovskites

We consider magnetic ordering in materials with negative charge transfer energy, such as iron perovskite oxides. We show that for a large weight of oxygen holes in conduction bands, the double exchange mechanism favors a helicoidal rather than ferromagnetic spin ordering both in metals, e.g. SrFeO_3 and insulators with a small gap, e.g. CaFeO_3. We discuss the magnetic excitation spectrum and effects of pressure on magnetic ordering in these materials.

Orbital ordering in charge transfer insulators

We discuss a new mechanism of orbital ordering, which in charge transfer insulators is more important than the usual exchange interactions and which can make the very type of the ground state of a charge transfer insulator, i.e. its orbital and magnetic ordering, different from that of a Mott-Hubbard insulator. This purely electronic mechanism allows us to explain why orbitals in Jahn-Teller materials typically order at higher temperatures than spins, and to understand the type of orbital ordering in a number of materials, e.g. K_2CuF_4, without invoking the electron-lattice interaction.

Orbital ordering and frustrations

An orbital ordering occurs in many transition metal compounds with Jahn-Teller ions and plays an important role in these materials. At the same time, exchange interactions in orbitally degenerate systems are inherently frustrated, even in materials with simple crystal lattices. We discuss the origin of this frustration, considering in detail materials with a cubic and triangular lattice of transition metal ions. We also discuss possible types of ground states of such systems, e.g., disordered orbital liquids and ordering due to the order-from-disorder mechanism.

Frustrated spin model as a hard-sphere liquid

We show that one-dimensional topological objects (kinks) are natural degrees of freedom for an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice. Its ground states and the coexistence of spin ordering with an extensive zero-temperature entropy can be easily understood in terms of kinks forming a hard-sphere liquid. Using this picture we explain effects of quantum spin dynamics on that frustrated model, which we also study numerically.

Optical excitation of interacting electron-hole pairs in disordered one-dimensional semiconductors

We apply the optimal fluctuation method to the calculation of the optical absorption in disordered one-dimensional semiconductors below the fundamental optical gap. We find that a photon energy exists at which the shape of the optimal fluctuation undergoes a dramatic change, resulting in a different energy dependence of the absorption rate above and below this energy. In the limit when the interaction of an electron and a hole with disorder is stronger than their interaction with each other, we obtain an analytical expression for the optical conductivity. We show that to calculate the absorption rate, it is, in general, necessary to consider a manifold of optimal fluctuations, rather than just a single fluctuation. For an arbitrary ratio of the Coulomb interaction and disorder, the optimal fluctuation is found numerically.

Peierls transition with acoustic phonons and twist deformation in carbon nanotubes

We consider the Peierls instability due to the interaction of electrons with both acoustic and optical phonons. We suggest that such a transition takes place in carbon nanotubes with small radius. The topological excitations and the temperature dependence of the conductivity resulting from the electron-lattice interactions are considered.

Magnetic Susceptibility Due to Disorder-Induced Neutral Solitons in Interacting Polymer Chains

We study the magnetic response due to neutral solitons induced by disorder in polymer materials. We account for interchain interactions, which, if sufficiently strong, result in a bond-ordered phase, in which the neutral solitons are bound into pairs. We analytically calculate the corresponding pair size distribution. As the spins of the solitons have a distance dependent antiferromagnetic coupling, this allows us to calculate the magnetic susceptibility in the ordered phase. At low temperatures, the result deviates from the usual Curie behavior in a way that depends on the relative strength of the disorder and the interchain interactions. We compare our results to the observed magnetic susceptibility of trans-polyacetylene and we suggest new experiments extending towards lower temperatures.

Charge ordering and opening of spin gap in NaV_2O_5

We suggest that the phase transition observed in NaV_2O_5 at T_c = 34K is not a spin-Peierls transition, but a charge ordering transition, related to the formal presence in this system of equal number of V^4+ and V^4- ions. Below T_c, V^4+ ions form a zigzag structure, which is consistent with the experimentally observed doubling of the lattice period in a and b directions. We show that this charge ordering also results in the alternation of spin exchange constants along the b-direction, which opens a gap in the spin excitation spectrum. We emphasize the role of lattice distortions around V ions both in the formation of the charged ordered state and in the spin-gap opening.

Instanton calculation of the density of states of disordered Peierls chains

We use the optimal fluctuation method to find the density of electron states inside the pseudogap in disordered Peierls chains. The electrons are described by the one-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian with randomly varying mass (the Fluctuating Gap Model). We establish a relation between the disorder average in this model and the quantum-mechanical average for a certain double-well problem. We show that the optimal disorder fluctuation, which has the form of a soliton-antisoliton pair, corresponds to the instanton trajectory in the double-well problem. We use the instanton method developed for the double-well problem to find the contribution to the density of states from disorder realizations close to the optimal fluctuation.

Phase diagram of disordered spin-Peierls systems

We study the competition between the spin-Peierls and the antiferromagnetic ordering in disordered quasi-one-dimensional spin systems. We obtain the temperature vs disorder-strength phase diagram, which qualitatively agrees with recent experiments on doped CuGeO_3.
