Implementing Learning Principles with a Personal AI Tutor: A Case Study

Effective learning strategies based on principles like personalization, retrieval practice, and spaced repetition are often challenging to implement due to practical constraints. Here we explore the integration of AI tutors to complement learning programs in accordance with learning sciences. A semester-long study was conducted at UniDistance Suisse, where an AI tutor app was provided to psychology students taking a neuroscience course (N=51). After automatically generating microlearning questions from existing course materials using GPT-3, the AI tutor developed a dynamic neural-network model of each student's grasp of key concepts. This enabled the implementation of distributed retrieval practice, personalized to each student's individual level and abilities. The results indicate that students who actively engaged with the AI tutor achieved significantly higher grades. Moreover, active engagement led to an average improvement of up to 15 percentile points compared to a parallel course without AI tutor. Additionally, the grasp strongly correlated with the exam grade, thus validating the relevance of neural-network predictions. This research demonstrates the ability of personal AI tutors to model human learning processes and effectively enhance academic performance. By integrating AI tutors into their programs, educators can offer students personalized learning experiences grounded in the principles of learning sciences, thereby addressing the challenges associated with implementing effective learning strategies. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the transformative potential of AI in education.

Topology of Learning in Artificial Neural Networks

Understanding how neural networks learn remains one of the central challenges in machine learning research. From random at the start of training, the weights of a neural network evolve in such a way as to be able to perform a variety of tasks, like classifying images. Here we study the emergence of structure in the weights by applying methods from topological data analysis. We train simple feedforward neural networks on the MNIST dataset and monitor the evolution of the weights. When initialized to zero, the weights follow trajectories that branch off recurrently, thus generating trees that describe the growth of the effective capacity of each layer. When initialized to tiny random values, the weights evolve smoothly along two-dimensional surfaces. We show that natural coordinates on these learning surfaces correspond to important factors of variation.

Cultural Structures of Knowledge from Wikipedia Networks of First Links

Knowledge is useless without structure. While the classification of knowledge has been an enduring philosophical enterprise, it recently found applications in computer science, notably for artificial intelligence. The availability of large databases allowed for complex ontologies to be built automatically, for example by extracting structured content from Wikipedia. However, this approach is subject to manual categorization decisions made by online editors. Here we show that an implicit classification hierarchy emerges spontaneously on Wikipedia. We study the network of first links between articles, and find that it centers on a core cycle involving concepts of fundamental classifying importance. We argue that this structure is rooted in cultural history. For European languages, articles like Philosophy and Science are central, whereas Human and Earth dominate for East Asian languages. This reflects the differences between ancient Greek thought and Chinese tradition. Our results reveal the powerful influence of culture on the intrinsic architecture of complex data sets.

BPS spectra from BPS graphs

I present a simple graphical method to find the BPS spectra of $A_1$ theories of class S. BPS graphs provide a bridge between spectral networks and BPS quivers, the two main frameworks for the study of BPS states. Here I show how to essentially read off from a BPS graph the quantum spectrum generator (or BPS monodromy), expressed as a product of quantum dilogarithms. Thanks to the framed wall-crossing phenomenon for line defects, the determination of the BPS spectrum reduces to the computation of quantum parallel transport across the edges of the BPS graph.

BPS Graphs: From Spectral Networks to BPS Quivers

We define "BPS graphs" on punctured Riemann surfaces associated with $A_{N-1}$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$. BPS graphs provide a bridge between two powerful frameworks for studying the spectrum of BPS states: spectral networks and BPS quivers. They arise from degenerate spectral networks at maximal intersections of walls of marginal stability on the Coulomb branch. While the BPS spectrum is ill-defined at such intersections, a BPS graph captures a useful basis of elementary BPS states. The topology of a BPS graph encodes a BPS quiver, even for higher-rank theories and for theories with certain partial punctures. BPS graphs lead to a geometric realization of the combinatorics of Fock-Goncharov $N$-triangulations and generalize them in several ways.

Quantum Holonomies from Spectral Networks and Framed BPS States

We propose a method for determining the spins of BPS states supported on line defects in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of class S. Via the 2d-4d correspondence, this translates to the construction of quantum holonomies on a punctured Riemann surface $\mathcal{C}$. Our approach combines the technology of spectral networks, which decomposes flat $GL(K,\mathbb{C})$-connections on $\mathcal{C}$ in terms of flat abelian connections on a $K$-fold cover of $\mathcal{C}$, and the skein algebra in the 3-manifold $\mathcal{C}\times [0,1]$, which expresses the representation theory of the quantum group $U_q(gl_K)$. With any path on $\mathcal{C}$, the quantum holonomy associates a positive Laurent polynomial in the quantized Fock-Goncharov coordinates of higher Teichmüller space. This confirms various positivity conjectures in physics and mathematics.

Exactly marginal deformations from exceptional generalised geometry

We apply exceptional generalised geometry to the study of exactly marginal deformations of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs that are dual to generic AdS$_5$ flux backgrounds in type IIB or eleven-dimensional supergravity. In the gauge theory, marginal deformations are parametrised by the space of chiral primary operators of conformal dimension three, while exactly marginal deformations correspond to quotienting this space by the complexified global symmetry group. We show how the supergravity analysis gives a geometric interpretation of the gauge theory results. The marginal deformations arise from deformations of generalised structures that solve moment maps for the generalised diffeomorphism group and have the correct charge under the generalised Reeb vector, generating the R-symmetry. If this is the only symmetry of the background, all marginal deformations are exactly marginal. If the background possesses extra isometries, there are obstructions that come from fixed points of the moment maps. The exactly marginal deformations are then given by a further quotient by these extra isometries. Our analysis holds for any $\mathcal{N}=2$ AdS$_5$ flux background. Focussing on the particular case of type IIB Sasaki-Einstein backgrounds we recover the result that marginal deformations correspond to perturbing the solution by three-form flux at first order. In various explicit examples, we show that our expression for the three-form flux matches those in the literature and the obstruction conditions match the one-loop beta functions of the dual SCFT.

K-Decompositions and 3d Gauge Theories

This paper combines several new constructions in mathematics and physics. Mathematically, we study framed flat PGL(K,C)-connections on a large class of 3-manifolds M with boundary. We define a space L_K(M) of framed flat connections on the boundary of M that extend to M. Our goal is to understand an open part of L_K(M) as a Lagrangian in the symplectic space of framed flat connections on the boundary, and as a K_2-Lagrangian, meaning that the K_2-avatar of the symplectic form restricts to zero. We construct an open part of L_K(M) from data assigned to a hypersimplicial K-decomposition of an ideal triangulation of M, generalizing Thurston's gluing equations in 3d hyperbolic geometry, and combining them with the cluster coordinates for framed flat PGL(K)-connections on surfaces. Using a canonical map from the complex of configurations of decorated flags to the Bloch complex, we prove that any generic component of L_K(M) is K_2-isotropic if the boundary satisfies some topological constraints (Theorem 4.2). In some cases this implies that L_K(M) is K_2-Lagrangian. For general M, we extend a classic result of Neumann-Zagier on symplectic properties of PGL(2) gluing equations to reduce the K_2-Lagrangian property to a combinatorial claim. Physically, we use the symplectic properties of K-decompositions to construct 3d N=2 superconformal field theories T_K[M] corresponding (conjecturally) to the compactification of K M5-branes on M. This extends known constructions for K=2. Just as for K=2, the theories T_K[M] are described as IR fixed points of abelian Chern-Simons-matter theories. Changes of triangulation (2-3 moves) lead to abelian mirror symmetries that are all generated by the elementary duality between N_f=1 SQED and the XYZ model. In the large K limit, we find evidence that the degrees of freedom of T_K[M] grow cubically in K.

Line operators in theories of class $\mathcal{S}$, quantized moduli space of flat connections, and Toda field theory

Non-perturbative aspects of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ are deeply encoded in the algebra of functions on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_\text{flat}$ of flat $SL(N)$-connections on Riemann surfaces. Expectation values of Wilson and 't Hooft line operators are related to holonomies of flat connections, and expectation values of line operators in the low-energy effective theory are related to Fock-Goncharov coordinates on $\mathcal{M}_\text{flat}$. Via the decomposition of UV line operators into IR line operators, we determine their noncommutative algebra from the quantization of Fock-Goncharov Laurent polynomials, and find that it coincides with the skein algebra studied in the context of Chern-Simons theory. Another realization of the skein algebra is generated by Verlinde network operators in Toda field theory. Comparing the spectra of these two realizations provides non-trivial support for their equivalence. Our results can be viewed as evidence for the generalization of the AGT correspondence to higher-rank class $\mathcal{S}$ theories.

BPS M5-branes as Defects for the 3d-3d Correspondence

We study supersymmetric probe M5-branes in the AdS_4 solution that arises from M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3-manifold M_3. This amounts to introducing internal defects within the framework of the 3d-3d correspondence. The BPS condition for a probe M5-brane extending along all of AdS_4 requires it to wrap a surface embedded in an S^2-fibration over M_3. We find that the projection of this surface to M_3 can be either a geodesic or a tubular surface around a geodesic. These configurations preserve an extra U(1) symmetry, in addition to the one corresponding to the R-symmetry of the dual 3d N=2 gauge theory. BPS M2-branes can stretch between M5-branes wrapping geodesics. We interpret the addition of probe M5-branes on a closed geodesic in terms of conformal Dehn surgery.

Punctures from Probe M5-Branes and N=1 Superconformal Field Theories

We study probe M5-branes in N=1 AdS5 solutions of M-theory that arise from M5-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface. Using the BPS condition from kappa-symmetry, we classify supersymmetric probe M5-branes that extend along all of AdS5 and intersect the Riemann surface at points. These can be viewed as punctures in the dual N=1 superconformal field theories. We find M5-branes that correspond to the two types of simple punctures previously studied in field theory. In addition, when the central charge is rational, we find a new class of M5-branes with a moduli space that includes two internal dimensions in addition to the Riemann surface. These new M5-branes have the essential characteristic of fractional branes, in that a single one at a generic point of its moduli space becomes multiple M5-branes at special points.

N=2 supersymmetric AdS_4 solutions of M-theory

We analyse the most general N=2 supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity consisting of a warped product of four-dimensional anti-de-Sitter space with a seven-dimensional Riemannian manifold Y_7. We show that the necessary and sufficient conditions for supersymmetry can be phrased in terms of a local SU(2)-structure on Y_7. Solutions with non-zero M2-brane charge also admit a canonical contact structure, in terms of which many physical quantities can be expressed, including the free energy and the scaling dimensions of operators dual to supersymmetric wrapped M5-branes. We show that a special class of solutions is singled out by imposing an additional symmetry, for which the problem reduces to solving a second order non-linear ODE. As well as recovering a known class of solutions, that includes the IR fixed point of a mass deformation of the ABJM theory, we also find new solutions which are dual to cubic deformations. In particular, we find a new supersymmetric warped AdS_4 x S^7 solution with non-trivial four-form flux.

The free energy of N=2 supersymmetric AdS_4 solutions of M-theory

We show that general N=2 supersymmetric AdS_4 solutions of M-theory with non-zero M2-brane charge admit a canonical contact structure. The free energy of the dual superconformal field theory on S^3 and the scaling dimensions of operators dual to supersymmetric wrapped M5-branes are expressed via AdS/CFT in terms of contact volumes. In particular, this leads to topological and localization formulae for the coefficient of N^{3/2} in the free energy of such solutions.

Generalized Geometry in AdS/CFT and Volume Minimization

We study the general structure of the AdS_5/CFT_4 correspondence in type IIB string theory from the perspective of generalized geometry. We begin by defining a notion of "generalized Sasakian geometry," which consists of a contact structure together with a differential system for three symplectic forms on the four-dimensional transverse space to the Reeb vector field. A generalized Sasakian manifold which satisfies an additional "Einstein" condition provides a general supersymmetric AdS_5 solution of type IIB supergravity with fluxes. We then show that the supergravity action restricted to a space of generalized Sasakian structures is simply the contact volume, and that its minimization determines the Reeb vector field for such a solution. We conjecture that this contact volume is equal to the inverse of the trial central charge whose maximization determines the R-symmetry of any four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theory. This variational procedure allows us to compute the contact volumes for a predicted infinite family of solutions, and we find perfect agreement with the central charges and R-charges of BPS operators in the dual mass-deformed generalized conifold theories.

AdS_5 Solutions of Type IIB Supergravity and Generalized Complex Geometry

We use the formalism of generalized geometry to study the generic supersymmetric AdS_5 solutions of type IIB supergravity that are dual to N=1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in d=4. Such solutions have an associated six-dimensional generalized complex cone geometry that is an extension of Calabi-Yau cone geometry. We identify generalized vector fields dual to the dilatation and R-symmetry of the dual SCFT and show that they are generalized holomorphic on the cone. We carry out a generalized reduction of the cone to a transverse four-dimensional space and show that this is also a generalized complex geometry, which is an extension of Kahler-Einstein geometry. Remarkably, provided the five-form flux is non-vanishing, the cone is symplectic. The symplectic structure can be used to obtain Duistermaat-Heckman type integrals for the central charge of the dual SCFT and the conformal dimensions of operators dual to BPS wrapped D3-branes. We illustrate these results using the Pilch-Warner solution.

The central charge of supersymmetric AdS_5 solutions of type IIB supergravity

We show that generic supersymmetric AdS_5 solutions of type IIB supergravity admit a canonical contact structure. This structure determines the central charge of the dual field theory and the conformal dimension of operators dual to supersymmetric wrapped D3-branes. Hence both quantities can be calculated using incomplete information about the solutions, allowing us to prove that they are rational numbers for solutions with a U(1) R-symmetry, in agreement with field theory expectations. We also discuss related Duistermaat-Heckman integrals and localization formulae.

An Abundance of Heterotic Vacua

We explicitly construct the largest dataset to date of heterotic vacua arising from stable vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds. Focusing on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with spectral cover bundles, we show that the number of heterotic models with non-zero number of generations is finite. We classify these models according to the complex base of their Calabi-Yau threefold and to the unification gauge group that they preserve in four dimensions. This database of the order of $10^7$ models, which includes potential Standard Model candidates, is subjected to some preliminary statistical analyses. The additional constraint that there should be three net generations of particles gives a dramatic reduction of the number of vacua.

A Gravity Dual and LHC Study of Single-Sector Supersymmetry Breaking

We propose a gravitational dual of ``single-sector'' models of supersymmetry breaking which contain no messenger sector and naturally explain the scale of supersymmetry breaking and the fermion mass hierarchy. In five dimensions these models can be given a simple interpretation. Inspired by flux-background solutions of type IIB supergravity, a metric background that deviates from AdS_5 in the IR breaks supersymmetry, while the fermion mass hierarchy results from the wavefunction overlap of bulk fermions with a UV-confined Higgs field. The first and second generation squarks and sleptons, which are localized near the IR brane, directly feel the supersymmetry breaking and obtain masses of order 10 TeV. These are interpreted as composite states of the dual 4D theory. The gauginos and third generation squarks and sleptons are elementary states that obtain soft masses of order 1 TeV at the loop level via direct gauge mediation. This particle spectrum leads to distinctive signatures at the LHC, similar to the usual gauge mediation with a neutralino NLSP that decays promptly to a gravitino LSP, but with lower event rates. Nevertheless we show that with 1-10 fb^{-1} of LHC data "single-sector" models can easily be detected above background and distinguished from conventional gravity and gauge mediation.
