Low-energy prethermal phase and crossover to thermalization in nonlinear kicked rotors

In the presence of interactions, periodically-driven quantum systems generically thermalize to an infinite-temperature state. Recently, however, it was shown that in random kicked rotors with local interactions, this long-time equilibrium could be strongly delayed by operating in a regime of weakly fluctuating random phases, leading to the emergence of a metastable thermal ensemble. Here we show that when the random kinetic energy is smaller than the interaction energy, this system in fact exhibits a much richer dynamical phase diagram, which includes a low-energy pre-thermal phase characterized by a light-cone spreading of correlations in momentum space. We develop a hydrodynamic theory of this phase and find a very good agreement with exact numerical simulations. We finally explore the full dynamical phase diagram of the system and find that the transition toward full thermalization is characterized by relatively sharp crossovers.

Coherent forward scattering as a robust probe of multifractality in critical disordered media

We study coherent forward scattering (CFS) in critical disordered systems, whose eigenstates are multifractals. We give general and simple arguments that make it possible to fully characterize the dynamics of the shape and height of the CFS peak. We show that the dynamics is governed by multifractal dimensions $D_1$ and $D_2$, which suggests that CFS could be used as an experimental probe for quantum multifractality. Our predictions are universal and numerically verified in three paradigmatic models of quantum multifractality: Power-law Random Banded Matrices (PRBM), the Ruijsenaars-Schneider ensembles (RS), and the three-dimensional kicked-rotor (3DKR). In the strong multifractal regime, we show analytically that these universal predictions exactly coincide with results from standard perturbation theory applied to the PRBM and RS models.

Coherent Forward Scattering Peak and Multifractality

It has recently been shown that interference effects in disordered systems give rise to two non-trivial structures: the coherent backscattering (CBS) peak, a well-known signature of interference effects in the presence of disorder, and the coherent forward scattering (CFS) peak, which emerges when Anderson localization sets in. We study here the CFS effect in the presence of quantum multifractality, a fundamental property of several systems, such as the Anderson model at the metal-insulator transition. We focus on Floquet systems, and find that the CFS peak shape and its peak height dynamics are generically controlled by the multifractal dimensions $D_1$ and $D_2$, and by the spectral form factor. We check our results using a 1D Floquet system whose states have multifractal properties controlled by a single parameter. Our predictions are fully confirmed by numerical simulations and analytic perturbation expansions on this model. Our results, which we believe to be generic, provide an original and direct way to detect and characterize multifractality in experimental systems.

Chaos-Assisted Long-Range Tunneling for Quantum Simulation

We present an extension of the chaos-assisted tunneling mechanism to spatially periodic lattice systems. We demonstrate that driving such lattice systems in an intermediate regime of modulation maps them onto tight-binding Hamiltonians with chaos-induced long-range hoppings $t_n \propto 1/n$ between sites at a distance $n$. We provide a numerical demonstration of the robustness of the results and derive an analytical prediction for the hopping term law. Such systems can thus be used to enlarge the scope of quantum simulations to experimentally realize long-range models of condensed matter.
