Fast weak-KAM integrators for separable Hamiltonian systems

We consider a numerical scheme for Hamilton-Jacobi equations based on a direct discretization of the Lax-Oleinik semi-group. We prove that this method is convergent with respect to the time and space stepsizes provided the solution is Lipschitz, and give an error estimate. Moreover, we prove that the numerical scheme is a geometric integrator satisfying a discrete weak-KAM theorem which allows to control its long time behavior. Taking advantage of a fast algorithm for computing min-plus convolutions based on the decomposition of the function into concave and convex parts, we show that the numerical scheme can be implemented in a very efficient way.

Tonelli Hamiltonians without conjugate points and $C^0$ integrability

We prove that all the Tonelli Hamiltonians defined on the cotangent bundle $T^*\T^n$ of the $n$-dimensional torus that have no conjugate points are $C^0$ integrable, i.e. $T^*\T^n$ is $C^0$ foliated by a family $\Fc$ of invariant $C^0$ Lagrangian graphs. Assuming that the Hamiltonian is $C^\infty$, we prove that there exists a $G_δ$ subset $\Gc$ of $\Fc$ such that the dynamics restricted to every element of $\Gc$ is strictly ergodic. Moreover, we prove that the Lyapunov exponents of every $C^0$ integrable Tonelli Hamiltonian are zero and deduce that the metric and topological entropies vanish.

Regularization of subsolutions in discrete weak KAM theory

We expose different methods of regularizations of subsolutions in the context of discrete weak KAM theory. They allow to prove the existence and the density of $C^{1,1}$ subsolutions. Moreover, these subsolutions can be made strict and smooth outside of the Aubry set.

Weak KAM theoretic aspects for nonregular commuting Hamiltonians

In this paper we consider the notion of commutation for a pair of continuous and convex Hamiltonians, given in terms of commutation of their Lax- Oleinik semigroups. This is equivalent to the solvability of an associated multi- time Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We examine the weak KAM theoretic aspects of the commutation property and show that the two Hamiltonians have the same weak KAM solutions and the same Aubry set, thus generalizing a result recently obtained by the second author for Tonelli Hamiltonians. We make a further step by proving that the Hamiltonians admit a common critical subsolution, strict outside their Aubry set. This subsolution can be taken of class C^{1,1} in the Tonelli case. To prove our main results in full generality, it is crucial to establish suitable differentiability properties of the critical subsolutions on the Aubry set. These latter results are new in the purely continuous case and of independent interest.

Existence of $C^{1,1}$ critical subsolutions in discrete weak KAM theory

In this article, following a first work of the author, we study critical subsolutions in discrete weak KAM theory. In particular, we establish that if the cost function $c:M \times M\to \R{}$ defined on a smooth connected manifold is locally semi-concave and verifies twist conditions, then there exists a $C^{1,1}$ critical subsolution strict on a maximal set (namely, outside of the Aubry set). We also explain how this applies to costs coming from Tonelli Lagrangians. Finally, following ideas introduced in the work of Fathi-Maderna and Mather, we study invariant cost functions and apply this study to certain covering spaces, introducing a discrete analogue of Mather's $α$ function on the cohomology.

Weak KAM for commuting Hamiltonians

For two commuting Tonelli Hamiltonians, we recover the commutation of the Lax-Oleinik semi-groups, a result of Barles and Tourin ([BT01]), using a direct geometrical method (Stoke's theorem). We also obtain a "generalization" of a theorem of Maderna ([Mad02]). More precisely, we prove that if the phase space is the cotangent of a compact manifold then the weak KAM solutions (or viscosity solutions of the critical stationary Hamilton-Jacobi equation) for G and for H are the same. As a corrolary we obtain the equality of the Aubry sets, of the Peierls barrier and of flat parts of Mather's $α$ functions. This is also related to works of Sorrentino ([Sor09]) and Bernard ([Ber07b]).

Strict sub-solutions and Mañe potential in discrete weak KAM theory

In this paper, we explain some facts on the discrete case of weak KAM theory. In that setting, the Lagrangian is replaced by a cost $c:X\times X \to \mathbb{R}$, on a "reasonable" space $X$. This covers for example the case of periodic time-dependent Lagrangians. As is well known, it is possible in that case to adapt most of weak KAM theory. A major difference is that critical sub-solutions are not necessarily continuous. We will show how to define a Mañe potential. In contrast to the Lagrangian case, this potential is not continuous. We will recover the Aubry set from the set of continuity points of the Mañe potential, and also from critical sub-solutions.
