De Haas - van Alphen study of the Dirac nodal-line semimetal candidate TaPtTe$_5$

We report a quantum oscillation study in the Dirac nodal-line semimetal candidate TaPtTe$_5$. The Fermi surface is probed via magnetic torque measurements with the magnetic field applied in the crystallographic a-b and b-c planes. The experimentally determined de Haas - van Alphen frequencies are consistent with results from band structure calculations. This study serves as an extension to the scarce quantum oscillation data on TaPtTe$_5$ currently present in the literature.

Interband transition orbit probed in de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in the (double) Dirac semimetal NbTe$_4$

NbTe$_4$ undergoes multiple charge density wave transitions that have attracted great interest in this material for decades. Previous work has shown that the crystal obtains the space group P4/ncc (130) at temperatures below 50K which allows for the existence of eightfold degenerate double Dirac points in the band structure. We provide insights into the electronic structure of this material through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and a rotation study of de Haas - van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the magnetic torque. We find that NbTe$_4$ exhibits magnetic breakdown orbits between electron and hole pockets.

Mechanical enhancement of quantum oscillations

We investigate quantum oscillation measurements in the Dirac nodal-line semimetal TaNiTe$_5$ which exhibit a strongly enhanced amplitude in the magnetoresistance. We show that mechanical properties of the measurement setup in combination with de Haas - van Alphen oscillations in the magnetic torque can cause this enhancement in the measured resistance, without involvement of any topological properties in this material. To support the empirical data, a numerical model is provided, showing good agreement.

Probing the Fermi surface with Quantum Oscillation Measurements in the Dirac semimetal TaNiTe$_5$

We report a detailed investigation of the Fermi surface in the layered Dirac semimetal TaNiTe$_5$. We probed the magnetization, magnetic torque and magnetoresistance in high-quality single crystals. Pronounced Shubnikov - de Haas (SdH) and de Haas - van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations are observed in magnetic fields above 3T and at temperatures of up to 22K. Multiple fundamental frequencies and light effective quasiparticle masses are obtained by fast Fourier transformation (FFT) and Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) formula fits. The high resolution of the low-temperature FFT spectra allows us to investigate individual peaks in detail for the magnetic fields applied along all three crystallographic axes and the planes in between. Our investigation can confirm the density functional theory (DFT) calculated band structure and its corresponding Fermi surface.

Dynamic Phase Alignment in Inertial Alfven Turbulence

In weakly-collisional plasma environments with sufficiently low electron beta, Alfvénic turbulence transforms into inertial Alfvénic turbulence at scales below the electron skin-depth, $k_\perp d_e\gtrsim 1$. We argue that, in inertial Alfvénic turbulence, both energy and generalized kinetic helicity exhibit direct cascades. We demonstrate that the two cascades are compatible due to the existence of a strong scale-dependence of the phase alignment angle between velocity and magnetic field fluctuations, with the phase alignment angle scaling as $\cosα_k\propto k_{\perp}^{-1}$. The kinetic and magnetic energy spectra scale as $\propto k_{\perp}^{-5/3}$ and $\propto k_{\perp}^{-11/3}$, respectively. As a result of the dual direct cascade, the generalized-helicity spectrum scales as $\propto k^{-5/3}_{\perp}$, implying progressive balancing of the turbulence as the cascade proceeds to smaller scales in the $k_{\perp} d_e \gg 1$ range. Turbulent eddies exhibit a phase-space anisotropy $k_{\parallel} \propto k_{\perp}^{5/3}$, consistent with critically-balanced inertial Alfvén fluctuations. Our results may be applicable to a variety of geophysical, space, and astrophysical environments, including the Earth's magnetosheath and ionosphere, solar corona, non-relativistic pair plasmas, as well as to strongly rotating non-ionized fluids.

State-Independent Quantum Key Distribution with Two-Way Classical Communication

A quantum key distribution protocol is proposed that is a variation of BB84 that provides raw key generation from correlations that violate a Bell-type inequality for single qubit systems and not entangled pairs. Additionally, it 1) is state-independent, 2) involves two-way classical communication, and 3) does not require basis matching between the two parties. The Brukner-Taylor-Cheung-Vedral (BTCV) time-like form of the Bell-CHSH inequality [C. Brukner, S. Taylor, S. Cheung, V. Vedral arXiv:quant-ph/0402127] is employed as an eavesdropping check; sequential measurements lead to an inequality identical in form to the Bell-CHSH inequality, which relies only on the measurements performed with no regard for the qubit states. We show that this form manifests naturally from the non-commutativity of observables.
