Classification of toric Fano 5-folds

We obtain 866 isomorphism classes of five-dimensional nonsingular toric Fano varieties using a computer program and the database of four-dimensional reflexive polytopes. The algorithm is based on the existence of facets of Fano polytopes having small integral distance from any vertex.

Worldsheet Instantons and Torsion Curves, Part A: Direct Computation

As a first step towards studying vector bundle moduli in realistic heterotic compactifications, we identify all holomorphic rational curves in a Calabi-Yau threefold X with Z_3 x Z_3 Wilson lines. Computing the homology, we find that H_2(X,Z)=Z^3+Z_3+Z_3. The torsion curves complicate our analysis, and we develop techniques to distinguish the torsion part of curve classes and to deal with the non-toric threefold X. In this paper, we use direct A-model computations to find the instanton numbers in each integral homology class, including torsion. One interesting result is that there are homology classes that contain only a single instanton, ensuring that there cannot be any unwanted cancellation in the non-perturbative superpotential.

Worldsheet Instantons and Torsion Curves, Part B: Mirror Symmetry

We apply mirror symmetry to the problem of counting holomorphic rational curves in a Calabi-Yau threefold X with Z_3 x Z_3 Wilson lines. As we found in Part A [hep-th/0703182], the integral homology group H_2(X,Z)=Z^3 + Z_3 + Z_3 contains torsion curves. Using the B-model on the mirror of X as well as its covering spaces, we compute the instanton numbers. We observe that X is self-mirror even at the quantum level. Using the self-mirror property, we derive the complete prepotential on X, going beyond the results of Part A. In particular, this yields the first example where the instanton number depends on the torsion part of its homology class. Another consequence is that the threefold X provides a non-toric example for the conjectured exchange of torsion subgroups in mirror manifolds.

Worldsheet Instantons, Torsion Curves, and Non-Perturbative Superpotentials

As a first step towards computing instanton-generated superpotentials in heterotic standard model vacua, we determine the Gromov-Witten invariants for a Calabi-Yau threefold with fundamental group pi_1(X)=Z_3 x Z_3. We find that the curves fall into homology classes in H_2(X,Z)=Z^3+(Z_3+Z_3). The unexpected appearance of the finite torsion subgroup in the homology group complicates our analysis. However, we succeed in computing the complete genus-0 prepotential. Expanding it as a power series, the number of instantons in any integral homology class can be read off. This is the first explicit calculation of the Gromov-Witten invariants of homology classes with torsion. We find that some curve classes contain only a single instanton. This ensures that the contribution to the superpotential from each such instanton cannot cancel.

Toric Geometry and Calabi-Yau Compactifications

These notes contain a brief introduction to the construction of toric Calabi--Yau hypersurfaces and complete intersections with a focus on issues relevant for string duality calculations. The last two sections can be read independently and report on recent results and work in progress, including torsion in cohomology, classification issues and topological transitions.

Integral Cohomology and Mirror Symmetry for Calabi-Yau 3-folds

In this paper, we compute the integral cohomology groups for all examples of Calabi-Yau 3-folds obtained from hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. Among 473 800 776 families of Calabi-Yau 3-folds $X$ corresponding to 4-dimensional reflexive polytopes there exist exactly 32 families having non-trivial torsion in $H^*(X, \Z)$. We came to an interesting observation that the torsion subgroups in $H^2$ and $H^3$ are exchanged by the mirror symmetry involution, i.e. the torsion subgroup in the Picard group of $X$ is isomorphic to the Brauer group of the mirror $X^*$

On the Covariant Quantization of Type II Superstrings

In a series of papers Grassi, Policastro, Porrati and van Nieuwenhuizen have introduced a new method to covariantly quantize the GS-superstring by constructing a resolution of the pure spinor constraint of Berkovits' approach. Their latest version is based on a gauged WZNW model and a definition of physical states in terms of relative cohomology groups. We first put the off-shell formulation of the type II version of their ideas into a chirally split form and directly construct the free action of the gauged WZNW model, thus circumventing some complications of the super group manifold approach to type II. Then we discuss the BRST charges that define the relative cohomology and the N=2 superconformal algebra. A surprising result is that nilpotency of the BRST charge requires the introduction of another quartet of ghosts.

NS Fivebrane and Tachyon Condensation

We argue that a semi-infinite D6-brane ending on an NS5-brane can be obtained from the condensation of the tachyon on the unstable D9-brane of type IIA theory. The construction uses a combination of the descriptions of these branes as solitons of the worldvolume theory of the D9-brane. The NS5-brane, in particular, involves a gauge bundle which is operator valued, and hence is better thought of as a gerbe.

Star Products from Open Strings in Curved Backgrounds

We define a non-commutative product for arbitrary gauge and B-field backgrounds in terms of correlation functions of open strings. While off-shell correlations are, of course, not conformally invariant, it turns out that, at least to first derivative order, our product has the trace property and is associative up to surface terms if the background fields are put on-shell. No on-shell conditions for the inserted functions are needed, but it is essential to include the full contribution of the Born-Infeld measure. We work with a derivative expansion and avoid any topological limit, which would effectively constrain $H$.

Toric complete intersections and weighted projective space

It has been shown by Batyrev and Borisov that nef partitions of reflexive polyhedra can be used to construct mirror pairs of complete intersection Calabi--Yau manifolds in toric ambient spaces. We construct a number of such spaces and compute their cohomological data. We also discuss the relation of our results to complete intersections in weighted projective spaces and try to recover them as special cases of the toric construction. As compared to hypersurfaces, codimension two more than doubles the number of spectra with $h^{11}=1$. Alltogether we find 87 new (mirror pairs of) Hodge data, mainly with $h^{11}\le4$.

Strings on Calabi--Yau spaces and Toric Geometry

After a brief introduction into the use of Calabi--Yau varieties in string dualities, and the role of toric geometry in that context, we review the classification of toric Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and present some results on complete intersections. While no proof of the existence of a finite bound on the Hodge numbers is known, all new data stay inside the familiar range $h_{11}+h_{12}\le 502$.

PALP: A Package for Analyzing Lattice Polytopes with Applications to Toric Geometry

We describe our package PALP of C programs for calculations with lattice polytopes and applications to toric geometry, which is freely available on the internet. It contains routines for vertex and facet enumeration, computation of incidences and symmetries, as well as completion of the set of lattice points in the convex hull of a given set of points. In addition, there are procedures specialised to reflexive polytopes such as the enumeration of reflexive subpolytopes, and applications to toric geometry and string theory, like the computation of Hodge data and fibration structures for toric Calabi-Yau varieties. The package is well tested and optimised in speed as it was used for time consuming tasks such as the classification of reflexive polyhedra in 4 dimensions and the creation and manipulation of very large lists of 5-dimensional polyhedra. While originally intended for low-dimensional applications, the algorithms work in any dimension and our key routine for vertex and facet enumeration compares well with existing packages.

Non-commutative tachyon action and D-brane geometry

We analyse open string correlators in non-constant background fields, including the metric $g$, the antisymmetric $B$-field, and the gauge field $A$. Working with a derivative expansion for the background fields, but exact in their constant parts, we obtain a tachyonic on-shell condition for the inserted functions and extract the kinetic term for the tachyon action. The 3-point correlator yields a non-commutative tachyon potential. We also find a remarkable feature of the differential structure on the D-brane: Although the boundary metric $G$ plays an essential role in the action, the natural connection on the D-brane is the same as in closed string theory, i.e. it is compatible with the bulk metric and has torsion $H=dB$. This means, in particular, that the parallel transport on the brane is independent of the gauge field $A$.

Superstring BRST Cohomology

We first derive all world-sheet action functionals for NSR superstring models with (1,1) supersymmetry and any number of abelian gauge fields, for gauge transformations of the standard form. Then we prove for these models that the BRST cohomology groups $H^g(s)$, $g<4$ (with the antifields taken into account) are isomorphic to those of the corresponding bosonic string models, whose cohomology is fully known. This implies that the nontrivial global symmetries, Noether currents, background charges, consistent deformations and candidate gauge anomalies of an NSR (1,1) superstring model are in one-to-one correspondence with their bosonic counterparts.

Actions and symmetries of NSR superstrings and D-strings

We present all NSR superstring and super-D-string actions invariant under a set of prescribed gauge transformations, and characterize completely their global symmetries. In particular we obtain locally supersymmetric Born-Infeld actions on general backgrounds in a formulation with extra target space dimensions. The nontrivial global symmetries of the superstring actions correspond to isometries of the background, whereas super-D-string actions can have additional symmetries acting nontrivially also on the coordinates of the extra dimensions.

SU(2) WZW D-branes and quantized worldvolume U(1) flux on S^2

We discuss possible D-brane configurations on SU(2) group manifolds in the sigma model approach. When we turn the boundary conditions of the spacetime fields into the boundary gluing conditions of chiral currents, we find that for all D-branes except the spherical D2-branes, the gluing matrices R^a_{b} depend on the fields, so the chiral Kac-Moody symmetry is broken, but conformal symmetry is maintained. Matching the spherical D2-branes derived from the sigma model with those from the boundary state approach we obtain a U(1) field strength that is consistent with flux quantization.

Complete classification of reflexive polyhedra in four dimensions

Four dimensional reflexive polyhedra encode the data for smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds that are hypersurfaces in toric varieties, and have important applications both in perturbative and in non-perturbative string theory. We describe how we obtained all 473,800,776 reflexive polyhedra that exist in four dimensions and the 30,108 distinct pairs of Hodge numbers of the resulting Calabi-Yau manifolds. As a by-product we show that all these spaces (and hence the corresponding string vacua) are connected via a chain of singular transitions.

$Λ$-symmetry and background independence of noncommutative gauge theory on $\mathbb R^n$

Background independence of noncommutative Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb R^n$ is discussed. The quantity $θ\hat F θ- θ$ is found to be background dependent at subleading order, and it becomes background independent only when the ordinary gauge field strength $F$ is constant. It is shown that, at small values of $B$, the noncommutative Dirac-Born-Infeld action possesses $Λ$-symmetry at least to subleading order in $θ$ if $F$ damps fast enough at infinity.
