Why detect forward muons at a muon collider

We survey the opportunities offered by the detection of the forward muons that accompany the creation of neutral effective vector bosons at a muon collider, in different kinematic regimes. Vectors with relatively low energy produce the Higgs boson and the extended muon angular coverage enables studies of the Higgs properties, such as the measurement of the inclusive production cross section and of the branching ratio to invisible final states. New heavy particles could be produced by vectors of higher energy, through Higgs portal interactions. If the new particles are invisible, the detection of the forward muons is essential in order to search for this scenario. The angular correlations of the forward muons are sensitive to the quantum interference between the vector boson helicity amplitudes and can be exploited for the characterisation of vector boson scattering and fusion processes. This is illustrated by analysing the CP properties of the Higgs coupling to the Z boson. Our findings provide a physics case and a set of benchmarks for the design of a dedicated forward muon detector.

How common are grand unified theories?

The individual fermion generations of the Standard Model fit neatly into a representation of a simple Grand Unified Theory gauge algebra. If Grand Unification is not realized in nature, this would appear to be a coincidence. We attempt to quantify how frequently this coincidence occurs among theories with group structure and fermion content similar to the Standard Model. While many of the completely chiral, anomaly-free fermion representations of the Standard Model gauge algebra that are no larger than the single generation Standard Model are unifiable, we find that unifiability quickly becomes rare when the analysis is extended to include other gauge algebras or larger representations. This purely group-theoretical analysis may be taken as a bottom-up indication for Grand Unification, conceptually similar to a naturalness argument.

Robust bounds on MACHOs from the faintest galaxies

We use the dynamical heating of stars in ultrafaint dwarf (UFD) galaxies to set limits on Massive Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs). In our analysis we study the robustness of the bounds under uncertainties in key UFD parameters, such as the half-light radius, stellar velocity dispersion, total halo mass and dark matter and stellar density profiles. We apply this framework to both well-established UFD candidates, as well as the recently discovered UFD candidate Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1. We find that multiple UFDs yield consistently strong limits in the mass range $10\, M_\odot \lesssim M_{\rm MACHO} \lesssim 10^9\, M_\odot$, underscoring the robustness of a previous analysis solely based on Segue I. We also demonstrate that Ursa Major III, if confirmed as an UFD, would improve the constraints significantly, providing the strongest constraints on MACHO dark matter in the mass range $1\, M_{\odot}\lesssim M_{\rm MACHO} \lesssim 10^5\, M_\odot$.

Dynamical Up-quark Mass Generation in QCD-like theories

We calculate the dynamically generated up quark mass in some QCD-like theories with $F=3$ light flavors, obtained from supersymmetric QCD perturbed via anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking. We match the low-energy effective theory to the traditional chiral Lagrangian of QCD and determine the coefficients to next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory, while also varying the number of colors $N$. We find that the dynamically generated up quark mass vanishes in the large $N$ limit, and is small for $F<N$, however for $F=N$ there is a sizeable $O(1)$ contribution. While our results are reliable only for small supersymmetry breaking, we observe that extrapolating the $F=N$ result to large supersymmetry breaking would lead to a dynamical up quark mass that is large enough to account for its entire physical mass.

Spontaneous CP Breaking in a QCD-like Theory

We examine the phase structure of a QCD-like theory at $\barθ=π$ obtained from supersymmetric $SU(N)$ QCD perturbed by a small amount of supersymmetry breaking via anomaly mediation (AMSB QCD). The spectrum of this theory matches that of QCD at the massless level, though the superpartners are not decoupled. In this theory it is possible to nail down the phase structure at $\barθ=π$ as a function of the quark masses and the number of flavors $F$. For one flavor we find that there is a critical quark mass, below which CP is unbroken, while above the critical mass CP is spontaneously broken. At the critical mass there is a second-order phase transition along with a massless $η'$. We are able to analytically solve for the minima and the critical mass for $N=2,3$ as well as for the large $N$ limit, while for other $N$ one can find numerical results. For two flavors, we find that CP is always broken as long as the quark masses are equal and non-zero, however there is a non-trivial phase boundary for unequal quark masses, which we find numerically. For $F\geq 3$ we obtain an intricate phase boundary which reproduces the various quark mass limits. All our results are in agreement with the predictions for ordinary QCD that were based on anomaly matching arguments for generalized symmetries and the effective chiral Lagrangian. We also briefly comment on the domain wall solutions first discussed by Draper, and are able to present analytic results for the simplest case of $SU(2)$ with one flavor.

The Seiberg-Witten Axion

We present a fully calculable UV complete toy model of a Peccei-Quinn (PQ) axion coupled to magnetic monopoles as well as electric charges. The theory has manifest electric-magnetic duality built in. We find that the axion-photon coupling contains the usual anomaly term, plus periodic corrections which can also become large if the monopole is light, without violating the discrete axion shift symmetry. These additional periodic terms can be identified as the non-perturbative corrections due to the monopoles (and other BPS states), but can also be interpreted as a sum over instanton corrections. The key aspect helping reconcile axion coupling quantization with electric-magnetic duality is the fact that the axion itself undergoes a non-linear transformation under electric-magnetic duality. The theory analyzed here is just the original $N=2$ supersymmetric $SU(2)$ Seiberg-Witten theory, which contains a PQ axion due to an anomalous spontaneously broken global $R$-symmetry, as well as massless fermionic monopoles and dyons at special points in the moduli space. Hence the entire machinery of the Seiberg-Witten solution can be applied to reliably calculate the photon-axion coupling in different duality frames. We show explicitly that the physically observable axion-photon amplitude is duality invariant, as it had to be.

Instanton NDA and Applications to Axion Models

We present a simple set of power counting rules which allows us to easily estimate calculable instanton effects up to $O(1)$ factors. We apply the resulting Instanton NDA to examine the effects of small instantons on various axion models. We confirm that mechanisms that increase the axion mass via small instantons generically also lead to an enhancement of misaligned instanton contributions to the axion potential, deepening the axion quality problem. For generic models, new sources of CP violation in the UV must be absent in order to raise the axion mass above the QCD prediction. However, we find that $Z_N$ and composite axions are UV-safe against these misalignment effects. Axion GUT models are also insensitive to UV contributions at the GUT scale, unless a very large number of extra states are introduced below this scale.

On the Dynamical Origin of the $η'$ Potential and the Axion Mass

We investigate the dynamics responsible for generating the potential of the $η'$, the (would-be) Goldstone boson associated with the anomalous axial $U(1)$ symmetry of QCD. The standard lore posits that pure QCD dynamics generates a confining potential with a branched structure as a function of the $θ$ angle, and that this same potential largely determines the properties of the $η'$ once fermions are included. Here we test this picture by examining a supersymmetric extension of QCD with a small amount of supersymmetry breaking generated via anomaly mediation. For pure $SU(N)$ QCD without flavors, we verify that there are $N$ branches generated by gaugino condensation. Once quarks are introduced, the flavor effects qualitatively change the strong dynamics of the pure theory. For $F$ flavors we find $|N-F|$ branches, whose dynamical origin is gaugino condensation in the unbroken subgroup for $F N+1$. For the special cases of $F = N-1, N, N + 1$ we find no branches and the entire potential is consistent with being a one-instanton effect. The number of branches is a simple consequence of the selection rules of an anomalous $U(1)_R$ symmetry. We find that the $η'$ mass does not vanish in the large $N$ limit for fixed $F/N$, since the anomaly is non-vanishing. The same dynamics that is responsible for the $η'$ potential is also responsible for the axion potential. We present a simple derivation of the axion mass formula for an arbitrary number of flavors.

Invisible Higgs from forward muons at a muon collider

We propose to probe the Higgs boson decay to invisible particles at a muon collider by observing the forward muons that are produced in association with the Higgs in the Z-boson fusion channel. An excellent sensitivity is possible in line of principle, owing to the large number of produced Higgs bosons, provided a forward muon detector is installed. We find that the resolution on the measurement of the muon energy and angle will be the main factor limiting the actual sensitivity. This poses tight requirements on the forward muon detector design.

Higgs Squared

We present a novel construction for a Higgs-VEV sensitive operator, which can be used as a trigger operator in cosmic selection models for the electroweak hierarchy problem. Our operator does not contain any degrees of freedom charged under the SM gauge symmetries, leading to reduced tuning in the resulting models. Our construction is based on the extension of a two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) with a softly broken approximate global $D_8$ symmetry (the symmetry group of a square). A cosmic crunching model based on our extended Higgs sector has only a percent level tuning corresponding to the usual little hierarchy problem. In large regions of parameter space the 2HDM is naturally pushed towards the alignment limit. A complete model requires the introduction of fermionic top partners to ensure the approximate $D_8$ symmetry in the fermion sector. We also show that the same extended Higgs sector can be used for a novel implementation of the seesaw mechanism of neutrino masses.

RG of GR from On-shell Amplitudes

We study the renormalization group of generic effective field theories that include gravity. We follow the on-shell amplitude approach, which provides a simple and efficient method to extract anomalous dimensions avoiding complications from gauge redundancies. As an invaluable tool we introduce a modified helicity $\tilde{h}$ under which gravitons carry one unit instead of two. With this modified helicity we easily explain old and uncover new non-renormalization theorems for theories including gravitons. We provide complete results for the one-loop gravitational renormalization of a generic minimally coupled gauge theory with scalars and fermions and all orders in $M_{Pl}$, as well as for the renormalization of dimension-six operators including at least one graviton, all up to four external particles.

A Global View of the Off-Shell Higgs Portal

We study for the first time the collider reach on the derivative Higgs portal, the leading effective interaction that couples a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) scalar Dark Matter to the Standard Model. We focus on Dark Matter pair production through an off-shell Higgs boson, which is analyzed in the vector boson fusion channel. A variety of future high-energy lepton colliders as well as hadron colliders are considered, including CLIC, a muon collider, the High-Luminosity and High-Energy versions of the LHC, and FCC-hh. Implications on the parameter space of pNGB Dark Matter are discussed. In addition, we give improved and extended results for the collider reach on the marginal Higgs portal, under the assumption that the new scalars escape the detector, as motivated by a variety of beyond the Standard Model scenarios.

Singlet night in Feynman-ville: one-loop matching of a real scalar

A complete one-loop matching calculation for real singlet scalar extensions of the Standard Model to the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) of dimension-six operators is presented. We compare our analytic results obtained by using Feynman diagrams to the expressions derived in the literature by a combination of the universal one-loop effective action (UOLEA) approach and Feynman calculus. After identifying contributions that have been overlooked in the existing calculations, we find that the pure diagrammatic approach and the mixed method lead to identical results. We highlight some of the subtleties involved in computing one-loop matching corrections in SMEFT.

Effective Field Theory of Gravity to All Orders

We construct the general effective field theory of gravity coupled to the Standard Model of particle physics, which we name GRSMEFT. Our method allows the systematic derivation of a non-redundant set of operators of arbitrary dimension with generic field content and gravity. We explicitly determine the pure gravity EFT up to dimension ten, the EFT of a shift-symmetric scalar coupled to gravity up to dimension eight, and the operator basis for the GRSMEFT up to dimension eight. Extensions to all orders are straightforward.

UV Sensitivity of the Axion Mass from Instantons in Partially Broken Gauge Groups

We examine the contribution of small instantons to the axion mass in various UV completions of QCD. We show that the reason behind the potential dominance of such contributions is the non-trivial embedding of QCD into the UV theory. The effects from instantons in the partially broken gauge group appear as "fractional instanton" corrections in the effective theory. These will exhibit unusual dependences on the various scales in the problem whenever the index of embedding is non-trivial. We present a full one-instanton calculation of the axion mass in the simplest product group models, carefully keeping track of numerical prefactors. Rather than using a 't Hooft operator approximation we directly evaluate the contributions to the vacuum bubble, automatically capturing the effects of closing up external fermion lines with Higgs loops. This approach is manifestly finite and removes the uncertainty associated with introducing a cutoff scale for the Higgs loops. We verify that the small instantons may dominate over the QCD contribution for very high breaking scales and at least three group factors.

Dark matter shifts away from direct detection

Dark matter could emerge along with the Higgs as a composite pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson $χ$ with decay constant $f\sim \mathrm{TeV}$. This type of WIMP is especially compelling because its leading interaction with the Standard Model, the derivative Higgs portal, has the correct annihilation strength for thermal freeze-out if $m_χ\sim O(100)$ GeV, but is negligible in direct detection experiments due to the very small momentum transfer. The explicit breaking of the shift symmetry which radiatively generates $m_χ$, however, introduces non-derivative DM interactions. In existing realizations a marginal Higgs portal coupling $λ$ is generated with size comparable to the Higgs quartic, and thus well within reach of XENON1T. Here, we present and analyze the interesting case where the pattern of explicit symmetry breaking naturally suppresses $λ$ beyond the reach of current and future direct detection experiments. If the DM acquires mass from bottom quark loops, the bottom quark also mediates suppressed DM-nucleus scattering with cross sections that will be eventually probed by LZ. Alternatively, the DM can obtain mass from gauging its stabilizing $U(1)$ symmetry. No direct detection signal is expected even at future facilities, but the introduction of a dark photon $γ_D$ has a number of phenomenological implications which we study in detail, treating $m_{γ_D}$ as a free parameter. Complementary probes of the dark sector include indirect DM detection, DM self-interactions, and extra radiation, as well as collider experiments. We frame our discussion in an effective field theory, motivating our parameter choices with a detailed analysis of an $SO(7)/SO(6)$ composite Higgs model, which can yield either scenario at low energies.

Charged Composite Scalar Dark Matter

We consider a composite model where both the Higgs and a complex scalar $χ$, which is the dark matter (DM) candidate, arise as light pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons (pNGBs) from a strongly coupled sector with TeV scale confinement. The global symmetry structure is $SO(7)/SO(6)$, and the DM is charged under an exact $U(1)_{\rm DM} \subset SO(6)$ that ensures its stability. Depending on whether the $χ$ shift symmetry is respected or broken by the coupling of the top quark to the strong sector, the DM can be much lighter than the Higgs or have a weak-scale mass. Here we focus primarily on the latter possibility. We introduce the lowest-lying composite resonances and impose calculability of the scalar potential via generalized Weinberg sum rules. Compared to previous analyses of pNGB DM, the computation of the relic density is improved by fully accounting for the effects of the fermionic top partners. This plays a crucial role in relaxing the tension with the current DM direct detection constraints. The spectrum of resonances contains exotic top partners charged under the $U(1)_{\rm DM}$, whose LHC phenomenology is analyzed. We identify a region of parameters with $f = 1.4\; \mathrm{TeV}$ and $200\;\mathrm{GeV} \lesssim m_χ\lesssim 400\;\mathrm{GeV}$ that satisfies all existing bounds. This DM candidate will be tested by XENON1T in the near future.
