Quantum probing of null-singularities

We adapt the dual-null foliation to the functional Schrödinger representation of quantum field theory and study the behavior of quantum probes in plane-wave space-times near the null-singularity. A comparison between the Einstein-Rosen and the Brinkmann patch, where the latter extends beyond the first, shows a seeming tension that can be resolved by comparing the configuration spaces. Our analysis concludes that Einstein-Rosen space-times support exclusively configurations with non-empty gravitational memory that are focussed to a set of measure zero in the focal plane with respect to a Brinkmann observer. To conclude, we provide a rough framework to estimate the qualitative influence of back-reactions on these results.

Quantum and Gradient Corrections to False Vacuum Decay on a de Sitter Background

We study the effects of a fixed de Sitter geometry background in scenarios of false vacuum decay. It is currently understood that bubble nucleation processes associated with first order phase transitions are particularly important in cosmology. The geometry of spacetime complicates the interpretation of the decay rate of a metastable vacuum. However, the effects of curvature can still be studied in the particular case where backreaction is neglected. We compute the imaginary part of the action in de Sitter space, including the one-loop and the gradient corrections. We use two independent methodologies and quantify the size of the corrections without any assumptions on the thickness of the wall of the scalar background configuration.

Unitarity in the Schroedinger Formalism of QFT in Curved Space-Time

We review the general quantization of scalar fields in curved space-times in the Schroedinger formalism and discuss the determination of the ground-state. By explicitly computing the norm of the ground-state wave functional, we give an argument for the instability of the ground-state of a QFT in a semi-classical space-time of Bianchi-type I. We find that this norm is, in general, time-dependent, and conclude that the ground-state evolution is not unitary.

A Quantum Complete Prelude to Inflation

It is shown that the inflationary paradigm admits quantum complete extensions of space-time. The extended inflationary spacetimes still have geodesic borders, but quantum fields are prohibited from migrating across these borders by their evolution semigroups. The geodesic singularities lurking across the borders lack a physical description because the evolution semigroups give vanishing probabilistic support to quantum fields for populating regions bordering on these singularities. As an example, anisotropic Bianchi type-I cosmologies are shown to be quantum complete preludes to inflation. They admit Kasner-like geometries close to their geodesic borders. Quantum fields enjoy a contractive evolution in these asymptotic regions and ultimately become free. As a consequence, quantum probes cannot migrate across the geodesic border of Bianchi type-I cosmologies.
