A First Step Towards Mesh-Free Probabilistic Shape Optimization

We present an initial implementation of a probabilistic PDE-constrained shape optimization algorithm. Our method is based on a novel probabilistic representation of the shape derivative, which is evaluated using Monte Carlo sampling; and does not rely on a mesh. The underlying state is represented with a neural network-based PDE solver on point clouds. The methodology is applied throughout to a benchmark tracking problem.

A Probabilistic Approach to Shape Derivatives

We introduce a novel mesh-free and direct method for computing the shape derivative in PDE-constrained shape optimization problems. Our approach is based on a probabilistic representation of the shape derivative and is applicable for second-order semilinear elliptic PDEs with Dirichlet boundary conditions and a general class of target functions. The probabilistic representation derives from an extension of a boundary sensitivity result for diffusion processes due to Costantini, Gobet and El Karoui [14]. Moreover, we present a simulation methodology based on our results that does not necessarily require a mesh of the relevant domain, and provide Taylor tests to verify its numerical accuracy

Deep BSDE Solver on Bounded Domains Part I: General Loss Rate

We consider a ramification of the deep BSDE loss functional designed to apply for BSDEs on bounded domains, i.e. with random (unbounded) time horizons. We derive a general convergence rate of the loss functional; precisely for a class of (randomly) weighted modifications of the functional. The rate is expressed in terms of the underlying discrete-time stepsize and a universal approximation distance.

A Discretization Scheme for BSDEs with Random Time Horizon

We analyze a natural extension of the backward Euler approximation for a class of BSDEs with Lipschitz generators and random (unbounded) time horizons. We derive strong error bounds in terms of the underlying stepsize; the distance between the continuous terminal time and a discrete-time approximation; the distance between the terminal condition and a respective approximation; and an integrated distance depending on an approximation of the time component of the generator - all are scaled by the exponential of the maximal terminal time. As application we consider decoupled FBSDEs on bounded domains. We use an Euler-Maruyama scheme to approximate the diffusion and further refine our error bounds to only depend on the distance of the exit times.
