Measuring data types

In this article, we combine Sweedler's classic theory of measuring coalgebras -- by which $k$-algebras are enriched in $k$-coalgebras for $k$ a field -- with the theory of W-types -- by which the categorical semantics of inductive data types in functional programming languages are understood. In our main theorem, we find that under some hypotheses, algebras of an endofunctor are enriched in coalgebras of the same endofunctor, and we find polynomial endofunctors provide many interesting examples of this phenomenon. We then generalize the notion of initial algebra of an endofunctor using this enrichment, thus generalizing the notion of W-type. This article is an extended version of arXiv:2303.16793, it adds expository introductions to the original theories of measuring coalgebras and W-types along with some improvements to the main theory and many explicitly worked examples.

Topological symmetric and braid homologies

We identify topological symmetric homology as the free $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-algebra on an $\mathbb{E}_1$-algebra and topological braid homology as the free $\mathbb{E}_2$-algebra on an $\mathbb{E}_1$-algebra. In this way, topological symmetric homology and topological braid homology can be regarded as variants of $1$-dimensional representation homology. In order to identify topological braid homology as the free $\mathbb{E}_2$-algebra on an $\mathbb{E}_1$-algebra, we prove that the $\mathbb{E}_2$-monoidal envelope of the associative operad can be identified with the braided crossed simplicial group. Using this, we also compute the topological braid homology of grouplike $\mathbb{E}_1$-spaces. Further, we develop computational tools for topological symmetric and braid homologies. These tools allow us to perform low-degree computations of topological symmetric homology and prove that it is not Morita invariant. We also compute the topological $Δ\mathbf{G}$-homology of Thom spectra in general and produce explicit formulas in the case of topological symmetric and braid homologies.

Coalgebraic $K$-theory

We establish comparison maps between the classical algebraic $K$-theory of algebras over a field and its analogue $K^c$, an algebraic $K$-theory for coalgebras over a field. The comparison maps are compatible with the Hattori--Stallings (co)traces. We identify conditions on the algebras or coalgebras under which the comparison maps are equivalences. Notably, the algebraic $K$-theory of the power series ring is equivalent to the $K^c$-theory of the divided power coalgebra. We also establish comparison maps between the $G$-theory of finite dimensional representations of an algebra and its analogue $G^c$ for coalgebras. In particular, we show that the Swan theory of a group is equivalent to the $G^c$-theory of the representative functions coalgebra, reframing the classical character of a group as a trace in coHochschild homology.

Topological $ΔG$ homology of rings with twisted $G$-action

We construct topological $ΔG$-homology for rings with twisted $G$-action. Here a ring with twisted $G$-action is a common generalization of a ring with anti-involution and a ring with $G$-action. This construction recovers as special cases topological Hochschild homology (THH) of rings, with its $S^1$-action, and Real topological Hochschild homology (THR) of rings with anti-involution, with its $O(2)$-action. A new example of this construction is quaternionic topological Hochschild homology (THQ) of rings with twisted $C_4$-action, which carries a $Pin(2)$-action. We prove that THQ of a loop space with twisted $C_4$-action can be $Pin(2)$-equivariantly identified with a twisted free loop space. Other new examples of interest are topological symmetric homology and topological hyperoctrahedral homology and more generally topological twisted symmetric homology. We prove a homotopical version of results of Fiedorowicz, Ault, and Graves computing these new topological homology theories on loop spaces with twisted $G$-action. A key step of independent interest in this program is the construction of a new family of crossed simplicial groups, which correspond to operads that encode the structure of rings with twisted $G$-action.

Functoriality of Enriched Data Types

In previous work, categories of algebras of endofunctors were shown to be enriched in categories of coalgebras of the same endofunctor, and the extra structure of that enrichment was used to define a generalization of inductive data types. These generalized inductive data types are parametrized by a coalgebra $C$, so we call them $C$-inductive data types; we call the morphisms induced by their universal property $C$-inductive functions. We extend that work by incorporating natural transformations into the theory: given a suitable natural transformation between endofunctors, we show that this induces enriched functors between their categories of algebras which preserve $C$-inductive data types and $C$-inductive functions. Such $C$-inductive data types are often finite versions of the corresponding inductive data type, and we show how our framework can extend classical initial algebra semantics to these types. For instance, we show that our theory naturally produces partially inductive functions on lists, changes in list element types, and tree pruning functions.

On products of skeleta

Given a symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category $\mathscr{E}$, compatible with finite colimits, we show that the functor sending a simplicial object in $\mathscr{E}$ to its skeletal filtration is canonically lax symmetric monoidal. This monoidal structure is the analogue of the one induced by the Eilenberg-Zilber homomorphism from the Dold-Kan correspondence. To accomplish this, we establish some new results around $\mathscr{O}$-promonoidal $\infty$-categories for any $\infty$-operad $\mathscr{O}$; most notably, we show that it is possible to localize $\mathscr{O}$-promonoidal $\infty$-categories in the same way one localizes symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories.

Equivariant algebraic $K$-theory of symmetric monoidal Mackey functors

We provide a unifying approach to different constructions of the algebraic $K$-theory of equivariant symmetric monoidal categories. A consequence of our work is that every connective genuine $G$-spectrum is equivalent to the equivariant algebraic $K$-theory of categorical Mackey functors of Bohmann-Osorno.

Trace methods for coHochschild homology

Hochschild homology is a classical invariant of rings that plays an important role because of its connection to algebraic $K$-theory via the Dennis trace. At level zero, the Dennis trace is induced by the Hattori-Stallings trace. In this paper, we introduce new algebraic $K$-theories of coalgebras and obtain coalgebraic refinements of the Hattori-Stallings trace that connect these algebraic $K$-theories to coHochschild homology (the invariant analogous to Hochschild homology but for coalgebras). We employ bicategorical methods of Ponto to show that coHochschild homology is a shadow. Consequently, we obtain that coHochschild homology is Morita-Takeuchi invariant.

Rigidification of connective comodules

Let $\mathbb{k}$ be a commutative ring with global dimension zero. We show that we can rigidify homotopy coherent comodules in connective modules over the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum of $\mathbb{k}$. That is, the $\infty$-category of homotopy coherent comodules is represented by a model category of strict comodules in non-negative chain complexes over $\mathbb{k}$. These comodules are over a coalgebra that is strictly coassociative and simply connected. The rigidification result allows us to derive the notion of cotensor product of comodules and endows the $\infty$-category of comodules with a symmetric monoidal structure via the two-sided cobar resolution.

A monoidal Dold-Kan correspondence for comodules

We provide examples of inductive fibrant replacements in fibrantly generated model categories constructed as Postnikov towers. These provide new types of arguments to compute homotopy limits in model categories. We provide examples for simplicial and differential graded comodules. Our main application is to show that simplicial comodules and connective differential graded comodules are Quillen equivalent and their derived cotensor products correspond. We deduce that the rational $A$-theory of a simply connected space $X$ is equivalent to the $K$-theory of perfect chain complexes with a $C_*(X; \mathbb{Q})$-comodule structure.

Coinductive control of inductive data types

We combine the theory of inductive data types with the theory of universal measurings. By doing so, we find that many categories of algebras of endofunctors are actually enriched in the corresponding category of coalgebras of the same endofunctor. The enrichment captures all possible partial algebra homomorphisms, defined by measuring coalgebras. Thus this enriched category carries more information than the usual category of algebras which captures only total algebra homomorphisms. We specify new algebras besides the initial one using a generalization of the notion of initial algebra.

Spanier-Whitehead duality for topological coHochschild homology

In this work, we compute the topological coHochschild homology (coTHH) of interesting coalgebras such as the Steenrod algebra spectrum. For this, we start by extending the Hess-Shipley definition of coTHH to $\infty$-categories, following the Nikolaus-Scholze approach to THH. Furthermore, we prove that coTHH of what we call quasi-proper coalgebras can be obtained from THH via Spanier-Whitehead duality which provides further insight into coTHH and its relationship to THH.

Koszul Duality in Higher Topoi

We show that there is an equivalence in any $n$-topos $\mathcal{X}$ between the pointed and $k$-connective objects of $\mathcal{X}$ and the $\mathbb{E}_k$-group objects of the $(n-k-1)$-truncation of $\mathcal{X}$. This recovers, up to equivalence of $\infty$-categories, some classical results regarding algebraic models for $k$-connective, $(n-1)$-coconnective homotopy types. Further, it extends those results to the case of sheaves of such homotopy types. We also show that for any pointed and $k$-connective object $X$ of $\mathcal{X}$ there is an equivalence between the $\infty$-category of modules in $\mathcal{X}$ over the associative algebra $Ω^k X$, and the $\infty$-category of comodules in $\mathcal{X}$ for the cocommutative coalgebra $Ω^{k-1}X$. All of these equivalences are given by truncations of Lurie's $\infty$-categorical bar and cobar constructions, hence the terminology "Koszul duality".

Coalgebras in the Dwyer-Kan localization of a model category

We show that weak monoidal Quillen equivalences induce equivalences of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories with respect to the Dwyer-Kan localization of the symmetric monoidal model categories. The result will induce a Dold-Kan correspondence of coalgebras in $\infty$-categories. Moreover, it shows that Shipley's zig-zag of Quillen equivalences lifts to an explicit symmetric monoidal equivalence of $\infty$-categories for the stable Dold-Kan correspondence. We study homotopy coherent coalgebras associated to a monoidal monoidal category. We show examples when these coalgebras cannot be rigidified. That is, their $\infty$-categories are not equivalent to the Dwyer-Kan localizations of strict coalgebras in the usual monoidal model categories of spectra and of connective discrete $R$-modules.

The coalgebraic enrichment of algebras in higher categories

We prove that given $\mathcal{C}$ a presentably symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category, and any essentially small $\infty$-operad $\mathcal{O}$, the $\infty$-category of $\mathcal{O}$-algebras in $\mathcal{C}$ is enriched, tensored and cotensored over the presentably symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category of $\mathcal{O}$-coalgebras in $\mathcal{C}$. We provide a higher categorical analogue of the universal measuring coalgebra. For categories in the usual sense, the result was proved by Hyland, López Franco, and Vasilakopoulou.

Coalgebras in symmetric monoidal categories of spectra

We show that all coalgebras over the sphere spectrum are cocommutative in the category of symmetric spectra, orthogonal spectra, $Γ$-spaces, $\mathcal{W}$-spaces and EKMM $\mathbb{S}$-modules. Our result only applies to these strict monoidal categories of spectra and does not apply to the $\infty$-category setting.
