Remote Sensing and Machine Learning-Based Analysis of Land Use and Vegetation Change in Dhaka District, Bangladesh

Rapid urbanization in Dhaka District, Bangladesh has triggered substantial alterations in land use and environmental conditions, necessitating systematic monitoring for informed urban planning and ecological sustainability. This study employs remote sensing data and machine learning techniques to analyze spatiotemporal changes in land cover and vegetation dynamics between 2019 and 2024. High-resolution satellite imagery from Sentinel-2 MSI and Landsat 8 was utilized to classify land cover types and compute spectral indices including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI), and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI). A supervised machine learning approach incorporating Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Random Forest classifiers was applied using labeled geospatial training points within Google Earth Engine. Accuracy assessments were conducted using confusion matrices and kappa statistics. Results indicate a 59.5% increase in urban built-up areas and a significant decline in vegetation (-8.46%) and water bodies (-7.77%) over the five-year period. Land conversion from vegetated and aquatic areas to urban infrastructure was identified as a dominant trend. Among the models, Random Forest demonstrated the highest classification accuracy. These findings underscore the growing environmental pressures driven by unregulated urban expansion in Dhaka. The study highlights the potential of remote sensing and machine learning tools in providing timely, actionable data to support sustainable urban development, land-use regulation, and ecosystem conservation policies.

Dual-Model Sentiment Analysis of Consumer Reviews in the Retail Coffee Sector Using Machine Learning and Deep Learning Approaches

Consumer reviews play an important role in shaping brand perception and business strategies, particularly in service-driven industries such as retail coffee. This study presents a comparative sentiment analysis framework for Starbucks customer reviews using classical machine learning and deep learning approaches. The dataset, collected from ConsumerAffairs, contains more than 700 reviews and was analyzed through preprocessing and exploratory data analysis to identify temporal and geographic patterns. Sentiment labels were generated by binarizing star ratings, with ratings of 4 and 5 classified as positive and ratings of 1 to 3 as negative. The resulting dataset was substantially imbalanced toward negative sentiment. Five machine learning classifiers, including Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree, Random Forest, and Naive Bayes, were evaluated alongside five deep learning models: LSTM, RNN, Bidirectional LSTM, GRU, and CNN. Model performance was assessed using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. SVM achieved the highest accuracy among the machine learning models at 91.0 percent, while Bidirectional LSTM showed the strongest performance among the deep learning models and demonstrated good generalization on unseen data. The findings also show that class imbalance negatively affected positive sentiment recall across several models. Overall, this study provides a comparative evaluation of machine learning and deep learning approaches for real-world consumer sentiment analysis and highlights the importance of appropriate model selection and preprocessing for customer experience analytics in the retail coffee sector.

Enhancing LLMs with Context-Specific Knowledge for Mitigating Misinformation in SMEs: A RAG-based Modeling and Analysis

Large Language Models (LLMs), a part of artificial intelligence (AI), are increasingly being adopted by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to enhance question-answering capabilities and support business decision-making processes. However, hallucinations in LLM-generated outputs can serve as a source of misinformation, reducing user confidence in their reliability and trustworthiness within SMEs. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has emerged as a promising approach to address this challenge by incorporating external knowledge sources into the modeling process. In this paper, we present VectorRAG and GraphRAG modeling approaches to mitigate hallucinations and misinformation risks and evaluate their effectiveness in SME environments. Our experimental evaluation is conducted on multiple state-of-the-art LLMs, including LLaMA, Mistral, and Qwen, to assess performance in terms of useful response generation, risk of hallucination, contextual relevance, as well as human-interpretation. The results demonstrate that RAG-enhanced LLMs can significantly improve response quality by reducing hallucinations and misinformation, thereby supporting more reliable, trustworthy, and context-aware decision-making in SME environments.

A Comparative Analysis of Ensemble-Based Machine Learning Approaches with Explainable AI for Multi-Class Intrusion Detection in Drone Networks

The growing integration of drones into civilian, commercial, and defense sectors introduces significant cybersecurity concerns, particularly with the increased risk of network-based intrusions targeting drone communication protocols. Detecting and classifying these intrusions is inherently challenging due to the dynamic nature of drone traffic and the presence of multiple sophisticated attack vectors such as spoofing, injection, replay, and man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks. This research aims to develop a robust and interpretable intrusion detection framework tailored for drone networks, with a focus on handling multi-class classification and model explainability. We present a comparative analysis of ensemble-based machine learning models, namely Random Forest, Extra Trees, AdaBoost, CatBoost, and XGBoost, trained on a labeled dataset comprising benign traffic and nine distinct intrusion types. Comprehensive data preprocessing was performed, including missing value imputation, scaling, and categorical encoding, followed by model training and extensive evaluation using metrics such as macro F1-score, ROC AUC, Matthews Correlation Coefficient, and Log Loss. Random Forest achieved the highest performance with a macro F1-score of 0.9998 and ROC AUC of 1.0000. To validate the superiority of the models, statistical tests, including Friedmans test, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test with Holm correction, and bootstrapped confidence intervals, were applied. Furthermore, explainable AI methods, SHAP and LIME, were integrated to interpret both global and local feature importance, enhancing model transparency and decision trustworthiness. The proposed approach not only delivers near-perfect accuracy but also ensures interpretability, making it highly suitable for real-time and safety-critical drone operations.

BIDWESH: A Bangla Regional Based Hate Speech Detection Dataset

Hate speech on digital platforms has become a growing concern globally, especially in linguistically diverse countries like Bangladesh, where regional dialects play a major role in everyday communication. Despite progress in hate speech detection for standard Bangla, Existing datasets and systems fail to address the informal and culturally rich expressions found in dialects such as Barishal, Noakhali, and Chittagong. This oversight results in limited detection capability and biased moderation, leaving large sections of harmful content unaccounted for. To address this gap, this study introduces BIDWESH, the first multi-dialectal Bangla hate speech dataset, constructed by translating and annotating 9,183 instances from the BD-SHS corpus into three major regional dialects. Each entry was manually verified and labeled for hate presence, type (slander, gender, religion, call to violence), and target group (individual, male, female, group), ensuring linguistic and contextual accuracy. The resulting dataset provides a linguistically rich, balanced, and inclusive resource for advancing hate speech detection in Bangla. BIDWESH lays the groundwork for the development of dialect-sensitive NLP tools and contributes significantly to equitable and context-aware content moderation in low-resource language settings.
