Continuous variable multipartite vibrational entanglement

A compact scheme for the preparation of macroscopic multipartite entanglement is proposed and analyzed. In this scheme the vibrational modes of a mechanical resonator constitute continuous variable (CV) subsystems that entangle to each other as a result of their interaction with a two-level system (TLS). By properly driving the TLS, we show that a selected set of modes can be activated and prepared in a multipartite entangled state. We first study entanglement properties of a three-mode system by evaluating the genuine multipartite entanglement. And investigate its usefulness as a quantum resource by computing the quantum Fisher information. Moreover, the robustness of the state against the qubit and thermal noises is studied, proving a long-lived entanglement. To examine the scalability and structural properties of the scheme, we derive an effective model for the multimode system through elimination of the TLS dynamics. This work provides a step towards a compact and versatile device for creating multipartite noise-resilient entangled state in vibrational modes as a resource for CV quantum metrology, quantum communication, and quantum computation.

Giant shift upon strain on the fluorescence spectrum of V$_{\rm N}$N$_{\rm B}$ color centers in $h$-BN

We study the effect of strain on the physical properties of the nitrogen antisite-vacancy pair in hexagonal boron nitride ($h$-BN), a color center that may be employed as a quantum bit in a two-dimensional material. With group theory and ab-initio analysis we show that strong electron-phonon coupling plays a key role in the optical activation of this color center. We find a giant shift on the zero-phonon-line (ZPL) emission of the nitrogen antisite-vacancy pair defect upon applying strain that is typical of $h$-BN samples. Our results provide a plausible explanation for the experimental observation of quantum emitters with similar optical properties but widely scattered ZPL wavelengths and the experimentally observed dependence of the ZPL on the strain.

Fast and efficient deterministic quantum state transfer between two remote mechanical resonators

The main challenge in deterministic quantum state transfer in long-distance quantum communications is the transmission losses in the communication channel. To overcome this limitation, here we use the adiabatic theorem and find a lossless evolution path between two remote mechanical modes. By adiabatic variation of the effective coupling strengths between the two nodes and the intermediate optical channel modes, we engineer a transmission path for the quantum state transfer that is decoupled from the decaying fiber modes. Using our proposed method we show that one obtains a quantum state transfer with high efficiency. Furthermore, to bypass the slow nature of the adiabatic process and its sensitivity to the mechanical damping and noise as well as the strength of the driving pulses, we develop the shortcut to adiabatic passage protocol for our proposed quantum state transfer. Our results show that the shortcut to adiabaticity provides an efficient and fast quantum state transfer even for small values of the coupling strength. We show that the performance of our protocol for long-distance quantum communications remains efficient for transferring the quantum states between two remote mechanical resonators being hundred meters apart.

Continuous-variable entanglement distillation by cascaded photon replacement

We study the entanglement distillation in continuous variable systems when a photon replacement protocol is employed. A cascaded protocol is studied and we find that the resultant entanglement increases by increasing the number of repetitions. Interestingly, the entanglement enhancement is not sensitive to the asymmetry of the protocol and gives the same result for any arrangement in the absence of loss. The non-Gaussianity of the outcome state is also studied and it is found that the non-Gaussianity of the state dramatically depends on the experimental arrangements. By providing practical information on photon replacement operation, this work is one step towards realization of universal quantum computation. In particular, in setups where deGaussifying protocols are only applicable to one of the parties.

Distinguishing Dirac from Majorana neutrinos in a microwave cavity

We propose a novel scheme for distinguishing between the Dirac and Majorana nature of neutrinos via interaction of a neutrino beam with microwave photons inside a cavity. We study the effective photon-photon polarization exchange induced by the photon-neutrino scattering. The quantum field theoretical studies of such effective picture are presented for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. Our phenomenological analyses show that the difference between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos can manifest itself in scattering rate of the photons. To enhance the effect a cavity scheme is employed. An experimental setup based on microwave cavities is then designed and simulated by finite element method to measure the scattering rate. Our results suggest that an experiment based on the current state-of-the-art technology will be able to probe the difference in about one year. However, it can be done in a few days by enhancing the neutrino beam flux or implementing with the near future equipments. Therefore, our work provides the possibility %puts the grounds for solving the long lasting puzzle of Dirac or Majorana nature of neutrinos.

Non-Gaussian macroscopic entanglement of motion in a hybrid electromechanical device

We propose a scheme for entangling the motion of two massive objects in a hybrid electromechanical architecture. The entanglement is generated due to the interaction of two mechanical oscillators with a mediating superconducting qubit. We show that the generated macroscopic entangled states are non-Gaussian and its lifetime is limited by coherence time of the qubit. The entanglement is attainable in a wide range of parameters with appropriate control of the qubit. We confirm performance of our scheme by numerically solving the quantum optical master equation including sources of noise. The effect of imperfections, such as asymmetries in the coupling rates as well as mechanical thermal noise are studied and shown how they affect the amount and lifetime of the entangled state. Due to the nonlinear nature of the qubit, the initial Gaussian state of mechanical resonators evolves into a quasi-stationary non-Gaussian state, which is essential for universal quantum information processing in continuous variable systems. This work, therefore, provides the first step towards a universal continuous variable quantum network.

Dynamical Topological Phase Transition in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We study a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) at low energy limit and show that their collective dynamics exhibit interesting topological behavior. The system undergoes dynamical topological phase transition at its global periods if its dispersion relation is strictly linear and when all of the bosonic mode are properly displaced from their equilibrium position. We corroborate the occurrence of dynamical phase transition by calculating Fisher zeros of the Loschmidt amplitude for sudden quench dynamics. A connection is established between the order of nonanalycity in the accumulated geometric phase and the spectral density of the system. Furthermore, it is shown that a power law scaling holds at all critical times for various displacement spectra, whose dynamical exponent equals unity. Eventually, a scheme for the quantum simulation of such dynamical phase transition is proposed. The scheme is based on the vibrational spectrum of a free-standing membrane of a two-dimensional material. To induce a displacement in the system and for tracking its collective geometrical dynamics, we propose to employ a spin that properly couples to the modes. When appropriate geometrical and boundary conditions are applied to the membrane, a spectrum with linear dispersion is attainable, then decoherence dynamics of the spin unveils occurrence of a dynamical topological phase transition.

Quantum Effects in a Mechanically Modulated Single Photon Emitter

Recent observation of quantum emitters in monolayers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has provided a novel platform for optomechanical experiments where the single-photon emitters can couple to the motion of freely suspended h-BN membrane. Here, we propose a scheme where the electronic degree of freedom of an embedded color center is coupled to the motion of the hosting h-BN resonator via dispersive forces. We show that the coupling of membrane vibrations to the electronic degree of freedom of the emitter can reach the strong regime. By suitable driving of a three-level $Λ$-system composed of two spin degrees of freedom in the electronic ground state as well as an isolated excited state of the emitter a multiple electromagnetically induced transparency spectrum becomes available. The experimental feasibility of the efficient vibrational ground-state cooling of the membrane via quantum interference effects in the two-color drive scheme is numerically confirmed. More interestingly, the emission spectrum of the defect exhibits a frequency comb with frequency spacings as small as the fundamental vibrational mode, which finds applications in high-precision spectroscopy.

Analog Quantum Simulation of Extremely Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Models

We propose a scheme for the quantum simulation of sub-Ohmic spin--boson models by color centers in free-standing hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) membranes. The electronic spin of a color center that couples to the membrane vibrational spectrum constitute the physical model. The spin-motion coupling is provided by an external magnetic field gradient. In this study, we show that a class of spectral densities can be attained by engineering geometry and boundary conditions of the h-BN resonator. We then put our focus on two extreme cases, i.e. $1/f$- and white-noise spectral densities. Spin coherence and polarization dynamics are studied. Our calculations show coherence revivals at periods set by the bath characteristic frequency signaling the non-Markovian nature of the baths. The nonequilibrium dynamics of the spin polarization exhibits a coherent localization, a property peculiar to the quantum phase transition in extremely sub-Ohmic spin-boson models. Our scheme may find application in understanding sources of decoherence in solid-state quantum bits.

Color centers in hexagonal boron nitride monolayers: A group theory and ab-initio analysis

We theoretically study physical properties of the most promising color center candidates for the recently observed single-photon emissions in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayers. Through our group theory analysis combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations we provide several pieces of evidence that the electronic properties of the color centers match the characters of the experimentally observed emitters. We calculate the symmetry-adapted multi-electron wavefunctions of the defects using group theory methods and analyze the spin-orbit and spin-spin interactions in detail. We also identify the radiative and non-radiative transition channels for each color center. An advanced ab-initio DFT method is then used to compute energy levels of the color centers and their zero-phonon-line (ZPL) emissions. The computed ZPLs, the profile of excitation and emission dipole polarizations, and the competing relaxation processes are discussed and matched with the observed emission lines. By providing evidence for the relation between single-photon emitters and local defects in h-BN, this work provides the first steps towards harnessing quantum dynamics of these color centers.

Spin-Mechanical Scheme with Color Centers in Hexagonal Boron Nitride Membranes

Recently observed quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) membranes have a potential for achieving high accessibility and controllability thanks to the lower spatial dimension. Moreover, these objects naturally have a high sensitivity to vibrations of the hosting membrane due to its low mass density and high elasticity modulus. Here, we propose and analyze a spin-mechanical system based on color centers in a suspended hBN mechanical resonator. Through group theoretical analyses and ab-initio calculation of the electronic and spin properties of such a system, we identify a spin doublet ground state and demonstrate that a spin-motion interaction can be engineered which enables ground state cooling of the mechanical resonator. We also present a toolbox for initialization, rotation, and readout of the defect spin qubit. As a result the proposed setup presents the possibility for studying a wide range of physics. To illustrate its assets, we show that a fast and noise resilient preparation of a multicomponent cat state and a squeezed state of the mechanical resonator is possible; the latter is achieved by realizing the extremely detuned, ultrastrong coupling regime of the Rabi model, where a phonon superradiant phase transition is expected to occur.

Parametric oscillation, frequency mixing and injection locking of strongly coupled nanomechanical resonator modes

We study locking phenomena of two strongly coupled, high-quality factor nanomechanical resonator modes subject to a common parametric drive at a single drive frequency. By controlled dielectric gradient forces we tune the resonance frequencies of the flexural in-plane and out-of-plane oscillation of the high stress silicon nitride string through their mutual avoided crossing. For the case of the strong common parametric drive signal-idler generation via parametric oscillation is observed, analogously to the framework of nonlinear optical effects in an optical parametric oscillator. Frequency tuning of the signal and idler resonances is demonstrated. When the resonance frequencies of signal and idler get closer to each other, partial injection locking, injection pulling and complete injection locking to half of the drive frequency occurs depending on the pump strength. Furthermore, satellite resonances, symmetrically off-set from signal and idler by their beat-note, are observed which can be attributed to degenerate four-wave-mixing in the highly nonlinear mechanical oscillations.

Heralded entangled coherent states between spatially separated massive resonators

We put forward an experimentally feasible scheme for heralded entanglement generation between two distant macroscopic mechanical resonators. The protocol exploits a hybrid quantum device, a qubit interacting with a mechanical resonator as well as a cavity mode, for each party. The cavity modes interfere on a beam-splitter followed by suitable heralding detections which post-select a hybrid entangled state with success probability 1/2. Subsequently, by local measurements on the qubits a mechanical entangled coherent state can be achieved. The mechanical entanglement can be further verified via monitoring the entanglement of the qubit pair. The setup is envisioned as a test bench for sensing gravitational effects on the quantum dynamics of gravitationally coupled massive objects. As a concrete example, we illustrate the implementation of our protocol using the current circuit QED architectures.

Degenerate optomechanical parametric oscillators: cooling in the vicinity of a critical point

Degenerate optomechanical parametric oscillators are optical resonators in which a mechanical degree of freedom is coupled to a cavity mode that is nonlinearly amplified via parametric down-conversion of an external pumping laser. Below a critical pumping power the down-converted field is purely quantum-mechanical, making the theoretical description of such systems very challenging. Here we introduce a theoretical approach that is capable of describing this regime, even at the critical point itself. We find that the down-converted field can induce significant mechanical cooling and identify the process responsible of this as a cooling-by-heating mechanism. Moreover, we show that, contrary to naive expectations and semi-classical predictions, cooling is not optimal at the critical point, where the photon number is largest. Our approach opens the possibility for analyzing further hybrid dissipative quantum systems in the vicinity of critical points.

Quantum State Engineering with Circuit Electromechanical Three-Body Interactions

We propose a hybrid system with quantum mechanical three-body interactions between photons, phonons, and qubit excitations. These interactions take place in a circuit quantum electrodynamical architecture with a superconducting microwave resonator coupled to a transmon qubit whose shunt capacitance is free to mechanically oscillate. We show that this system design features a three-mode polariton--mechanical mode and a nonlinear transmon--mechanical mode interaction in the strong coupling regime. Together with the strong resonator--transmon interaction, these properties provide intriguing opportunities for manipulations of this hybrid quantum system. We show, in particular, the feasibility of cooling the mechanical motion down to its ground state and preparing various nonclassical states including mechanical Fock and cat states and hybrid tripartite entangled states.

Entangling the motion of two optically trapped objects via time-modulated driving fields

We study entanglement of the motional degrees of freedom of two tethered and optically trapped microdisks inside a single cavity. By properly choosing the position of the trapped objects in the optical cavity and driving proper modes of the cavity it is possible to equip the system with linear and quadratic optomechanical couplings. We show that a parametric coupling between the fundamental vibrational modes of two tethered mircodiscs can be generated via a time modulated input laser. For a proper choice of the modulation frequency, this mechanism can drive the motion of the microdisks into an inseparable state in the long time limit via a two-mode squeezing process. We numerically confirm the performance of our scheme for current technology and briefly discuss an experimental setup which can be employed for detecting this entanglement by employing the quadratic coupling. We also comment on the perspectives for generating such entanglement between the oscillations of optically levitated nanospheres.

Continuous variable entanglement swapping and its local certification: entangling distant mechanical modes

We introduce a modification of the standard entanglement swapping protocol where the generation of entanglement between two distant modes is realized and verified using only local optical measurements. We show, indeed, that a simple condition on the purity of the initial state involving also an ancillary mode is sufficient to guarantee the success of the protocol by local measurements {M. Abdi \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{109}, 143601 (2012)}]. We apply the proposed protocol to a tripartite optomechanical system where the never interacting mechanical modes become entangled and certified using only local optical measurements.

Entanglement swapping with local certification: Application to remote micromechanical resonators

We propose a protocol for entanglement swapping which involves tripartite systems. The generation of remote entanglement induced by the Bell measurement can be easily certified by additional local measurements. We illustrate the protocol in the case of continuous variable systems where the certification is effective for an appropriate class of three-mode Gaussian states. We then apply the protocol to optomechanical systems, showing how mechanical entanglement between two remote micromechanical resonators can be generated and certified via local optical measurements.
