Coarse-grained models for loop quantum gravity and their renormalization

We introduce a family of effective theories and use them to define a specific type of coarse-grained models for canonical loop quantum gravity. Each effective theory is characterized by two parameters and it consists mainly of a Hilbert space of coarse states and an effective Hamiltonian operator. The construction of the coarse Hilbert spaces relies on a systematic coarse-graining procedure for spin network states. The effective Hamiltonians are then obtained from an analysis of the interplay between this coarse-graining procedure and the action of various Hamiltonian operators defined in loop quantum gravity. Finally, we provide a prescription for implementing the Hamiltonian non-perturbative renormalization framework for the coarse-grained models, and we explicitly write down the renormalization flow equations. The aim of this work is to build an arena for studying the emergence of the continuum limit and the derivation of phenomenological models in the context of canonical loop quantum gravity.

On the non-commutativity of geometric observables in different Lorentz frames

Our aim is to establish whether geometric observables, such as length, area or volume of a physical object, viewed by different observers Poisson commute or not. To illustrate this, we compute the Poisson bracket of two lengths associated to a rigid rod and measured by two different geodesic (inertial) observers, one of which is at rest while the other is moving with respect to the rod. Our calculation shows that geometric observables measured by different observers generically do not Poisson commute, not even in Minkowski spacetime. This non-trivial result provides interesting insights into questions related to the presence of a fundamental scale in the context of quantum gravity.

Elementary blocks of Loop Quantum Gravity

We embark on the vast program of integrating the dynamics of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG). Adopting the strategy of decomposing spin network states into small blocks of (quantum) geometry which can later be glued back together, we focus on the more modest objective of studying the Hamiltonian dynamics on the {\it candy graph}, that is two nodes linked together by an arbitrary number of edges and also having open edges. This elementary setting allows both for curvature to develop around the bulk loops and both non-trivial boundary data and dynamics on the open edges. We study this system at the classical level and leave the detailed of its quantum regime for future investigation. Working on a single loop with two external legs, we show how the LQG Hamiltonian ansatz reduces to a pair of non-linear differential equations, similar to the cubic Schr\"odinger equation, on the areas carried by the bulk links. We provide analytical solutions to this evolution equation, identifying oscillatory modes (bounded modes) and divergent modes (similar to bouncing cosmological trajectories). This provides an explicit template for future investigations of LQG dynamics on more sophisticated spin network architecture built as arrays of candy graphs.

On the covariant formulation of gauge theories with boundaries

In the present article, we review the classical covariant formulation of Yang-Mills theory and general relativity in the presence of spacetime boundaries, focusing mainly on the derivation of the presymplectic forms and their properties. We further revisit the introduction of the edge modes and the conditions which justify them, in the context where only field-independent gauge transformations are considered. We particularly show that the presence of edge modes is not justified by gauge invariance of the presymplectic form, but rather by the condition that the presymplectic form is degenerate on the initial field space, which allows to relate this presymplectic form to the symplectic form on the gauge reduced field space via pullback.

Loop representation and r-Fock measures for $SU(N)$ gauge theories

In this article we continue the work on translating elements of the perturbative quantum field theory defined on Minkowski spacetime into the background independent framework of Loop Quantum Gravity. We present the construction of r-Fock measures for $SU(N)$ gauge theories and provide a relation between these new r-Fock measures and the difeomorphism invariant measure used in loop quantum gravity.

Loop effective model for Schwarzschild black hole interior: a modified $\bar μ$ dynamics

In this article, we introduce a new effective model for the Kantowski-Sachs spacetime in the context of loop quantum gravity, and we use it to evaluate departures from general relativity in the case of Schwarzschild black hole interior. The model is based on an effective Hamiltonian constructed via the regularized Thiemann identities in the $\bar μ$-scheme. We show that, in contrast with the $μ_o$-scheme studied in [1], the classical limit imposes certain alterations of Thiemann identities as well as restrictions on the choice of regulators. Once we define the Hamiltonian, we derive the equations of motion for the relevant variables and proceed with the solving using numerical methods, focusing on a specific choice of $\bar μ$. We establish that for a Schwarzschild black hole interior, the effective dynamics leads to a resolution of the classical singularity and the emergence of an anti-trapped region bounded by a second Killing horizon. We then perform a comparison of the dynamical trajectories and their properties obtained in the new model and some models present in the literature. We finally conclude with few comments on other choices of the regulators and their consequences.

Thermal quantum gravity condensates in group field theory cosmology

The condensate cosmology programme of group field theory has produced several interesting results. The key idea is in the suggestion that a macroscopic homogeneous spacetime can be approximated by a dynamical condensate phase of the underlying microscopic system of an arbitrarily large number of candidate quanta of geometry. In this work, we extend the standard treatments in two ways: by using a class of thermal condensates, the coherent thermal states, which encode statistical fluctuations in quantum geometry; and, by introducing a suitable class of smearing functions as non-singular, well-behaved generalisations for relational clock frames in group field theory. In particular, we investigate an effective relational cosmological dynamics for homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes, extracted from a class of free group field theory models, and subsequently investigate aspects of its late and early times evolution. We find the correct classical limit of Friedmann equations at late times, with a bounce and accelerated expansion at early times. Specifically, we find additional correction terms in the evolution equations corresponding to the statistical contribution of the new thermal condensates in general; and, a higher upper bound on the number of e-folds, even without including any interactions.

Hopf link volume simplicity constraints in spin foam models

In this article we consider specific bivector geometries which arise in the large-spin limit of the extension of the Engle-Pereira-Rovelli-Livine spin foam model for quantum gravity by Kaminski, Kisielowski and Lewandowski. We address the implementation of volume simplicity constraints, which are required to ensure that a $4d$ metric can be reconstructed from the bivector geometry. We find that the necessary conditions are closely related, but not quite equal to the Hopf link volume simplicity constraints introduced in earlier works. We estimate the number of independent geometricity conditions for arbitrary bivector geometries, and find that they always agree with the number of Hopf links on the graph minus one, suggesting that the geometricity conditions can generically be formulated by deformation of the Hopf link volume simplicity constraints.

Graph coherent states for loop quantum gravity

In this article we further investigate the construction of graph coherent states, first introduced in [1], in the context of loop quantum gravity. We specifically investigate the possibility of defining a family of graph coherent states adapted to the canonical loop quantum gravity Hamiltonian. After discussing various aspects of the general framework and the choice of operators, we use the Euclidean part of the Hamiltonian operator to propose a generator of the generalized canonical structure, necessary to define the coherent states. We then apply the construction procedure, leading to a new family of graph coherent states partially adapted to the gravity Hamiltonian in loop quantum gravity.

Thermal representations in group field theory: squeezed vacua and quantum gravity condensates

We apply the formalism of thermofield dynamics to group field theory quantum gravity and construct thermal representations associated with generalised equilibrium Gibbs states using Bogoliubov transformations. The newly constructed class of thermal vacua are entangled, two-mode squeezed, thermofield double states. The corresponding finite temperature representations are inequivalent to the standard zero temperature one based on a degenerate vacuum. An interesting class of states, coherent thermal states, are defined and understood as thermal quantum gravity condensates.

Perspectives on the dynamics in a loop quantum gravity effective description of black hole interiors

In the loop quantum gravity context, there have been numerous proposals to quantize the reduced phase space of a black hole, and develop a classical effective description for its interior which eventually resolves the singularity. However, little progress has been made towards understanding the relation between such quantum/effective minisuperspace models and what would be the spherically symmetric sector of loop quantum gravity. In particular, it is not clear whether one can extract the phenomenological predictions obtained in minisuperspace models, such as the singularity resolution and the spacetime continuation beyond the singularity, based on results in full loop quantum gravity. In this paper, we present an attempt in this direction in the context of Kantowski-Sachs spacetime, through the proposal of two new effective Hamiltonians for the reduced classical model. The first is derived using Thiemann classical identities for the regularized expressions, while the second is obtained as a first approximation of the expectation value of a Hamiltonian operator in loop quantum gravity in a semi-classical state peaked on the Kantowski-Sachs initial data. We then proceed with a detailed analysis of the dynamics they generate and compare them with the Hamiltonian derived in General Relativity and the common effective Hamiltonian proposed in earlier literature.

Emergent de Sitter epoch of the Loop Quantum Cosmos: a detailed analysis

We present a detailed analysis of a quantum model for Loop Quantum Cosmology based on strict application of the Thiemann regularization algorithm for the Hamiltonian in Loop Quantum Gravity, extending the results presented previously in our brief report. This construction leads to a qualitative modification of the bounce paradigm. Quantum gravity effects still lead to a quantum bounce connecting deterministically large classical Universes. However, the evolution features a large epoch of de Sitter Universe, with emergent cosmological constant of Planckian order, smoothly transiting into a spatially flat expanding Universe. Moreover, we present an effective Hamiltonian describing the quantum evolution to high accuracy and for which the dynamics can be solved analytically.

On the polymer quantization of connection theories: graph coherent states

We present the construction of a new family of coherent states for quantum theories of connections obtained following the polymer quantization. The realization of these coherent states is based on the notion of graph change, in particular the one induced by the quantum dynamics in Yang-Mills and gravity quantum theories. Using a Fock-like canonical structure that we introduce, we derive the new coherent states that we call the graph coherent states. These states take the form of an infinite superposition of basis network states with different graphs. We further discuss the properties of such states and certain extensions of the proposed construction.

Emergent de Sitter epoch of the quantum Cosmos

The quantum nature of the Big Bang is reexamined in the framework of Loop Quantum Cosmology. The strict application of a regularization procedure to the Hamiltonian, originally developed for the Hamiltonian in loop quantum gravity, leads to a qualitative modification of the bounce paradigm. Quantum gravity effects still lead to a quantum bounce connecting deterministically large classical Universes. However, the evolution features a large epoch of de Sitter Universe, with emergent cosmological constant of Planckian order, smoothly transiting into a flat expanding Universe.

Time evolution in deparametrized models of loop quantum gravity

An important aspect in understanding the dynamics in the context of deparametrized models of LQG is to obtain a sufficient control on the quantum evolution generated by a given Hamiltonian operator. More specifically, we need to be able to compute the evolution of relevant physical states and observables with a relatively good precision. In this article, we introduce an approximation method to deal with the physical Hamiltonian operators in deparametrized LQG models, and apply it to models in which a free Klein-Gordon scalar field or a non-rotational dust field is taken as the physical time variable. This method is based on using standard time-independent perturbation theory of quantum mechanics to define a perturbative expansion of the Hamiltonian operator, the small perturbation parameter being determined by the Barbero-Immirzi parameter $β$. This method allows us to define an approximate spectral decomposition of the Hamiltonian operators and hence to compute the evolution over a certain time interval. As a specific example, we analyze the evolution of expectation values of the volume and curvature operators starting with certain physical initial states, using both the perturbative method and a straightforward expansion of the expectation value in powers of the time variable. This work represents a first step towards achieving the goal of understanding and controlling the new dynamics developed in [25, 26].

Rainbow metric from quantum gravity: anisotropic cosmology

In this paper we present a construction of effective cosmological models which describe the propagation of a massive quantum scalar field on a quantum anisotropic cosmological spacetime. Each obtained effective model is represented by a rainbow metric in which particles of distinct momenta propagate on different classical geometries. Our analysis shows that upon certain assumptions and conditions on the parameters determining such anisotropic models, we surprisingly obtain a unique deformation parameter $β$ in the modified dispersion relation of the modes. Hence inducing an isotropic deformation despite the general starting considerations. We then ensure the recovery of the dispersion relation realized in the isotropic case, studied in [arXiv:1412.6000], when some proper symmetry constraints are imposed, and we estimate the value of the deformation parameter for this case in loop quantum cosmology context.

Rainbow metric from quantum gravity

In this letter, we describe a general mechanism for emergence of a rainbow metric from a quantum cosmological model. This idea is based on QFT on a quantum space-time. Under general assumptions, we discover that the quantum space-time on which the field propagates can be replaced by a classical space-time, whose metric depends explicitly on the energy of the field: as shown by an analysis of dispersion relations, quanta of different energy propagate on different metrics, similar to photons in a refractive material (hence the name "rainbow" used in the literature). In deriving this result, we do not consider any specific theory of quantum gravity: the qualitative behavior of high-energy particles on quantum space-time relies only on the assumption that the quantum space-time is described by a wave-function $Ψ_o$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_G$.

Hamiltonian operator for loop quantum gravity coupled to a scalar field

We present the construction of a physical Hamiltonian operator in the deparametrized model of loop quantum gravity coupled to a free scalar field. This construction is based on the use of the recently introduced curvature operator, and on the idea of so-called "special loops". We discuss in detail the regularization procedure and the assignment of the loops, along with the properties of the resulting operator. We compute the action of the squared Hamiltonian operator on spin network states, and close with some comments and outlooks.
