Inverse Boundary Value and Optimal Control Problems on Graphs: A Neural and Numerical Synthesis

A general setup for deterministic system identification problems on graphs with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions is introduced. When control nodes are available along the boundary, we apply a discretize-then-optimize method to estimate an optimal control. A key piece in the present architecture is our boundary injected message passing neural network. This will produce more accurate predictions that are considerably more stable in proximity of the boundary. Also, a regularization technique based on graphical distance is introduced that helps with stabilizing the predictions at nodes far from the boundary.

Generalized star configurations and the Tutte polynomial

From the generating matrix of a linear code one can construct a sequence of generalized star configurations which are strongly connected to the generalized Hamming weights and the underlying matroid of the code. When the code is MDS, the matrix is generic and we obtain the usual star configurations. In our main result, we show that the degree of a generalized star configuration as a projective scheme is determined by the Tutte polynomial of the code. In the process, we obtain preliminary results on the primary decomposition of the defining ideals of these schemes. Additionally, we conjecture that these ideals have linear minimal free resolutions and prove partial results in this direction.

A blowup algebra of hyperplane arrangements

It is shown that the Orlik-Terao algebra is graded isomorphic to the special fiber of the ideal $I$ generated by the $(n-1)$-fold products of the members of a central arrangement of size $n$. This momentum is carried over to the Rees algebra (blowup) of $I$ and it is shown that this algebra is of fiber-type and Cohen-Macaulay. It follows by a result of Simis-Vasconcelos that the special fiber of $I$ is Cohen-Macaulay, thus giving another proof of a result of Proudfoot-Speyer about the Cohen-Macauleyness of the Orlik-Terao algebra.

Minimum distance of linear codes and the $α$-invariant

The simple interpretation of the minimum distance of a linear code obtained by De Boer and Pellikaan, and later refined by the second author, is further developed through the study of various finitely generated graded modules. We use the methods of commutative/homological algebra to find connections between the minimum distance and the $α$-invariant of such modules.

Modular decomposition of the Orlik-Terao algebra of a hyperplane arrangement

Let A be a collection of n linear hyperplanes in k^l, where k is an algebraically closed field. The Orlik-Terao algebra of A is the subalgebra R(A) of the rational functions generated by reciprocals of linear forms vanishing on hyperplanes of A. It determines an irreducible subvariety of projective space. We show that a flat X of A is modular if and only if R(A) is a split extension of the Orlik-Terao algebra of the subarrangement A_X. This provides another refinement of Stanley's modular factorization theorem and a new characterization of modularity, similar in spirit to the modular fibration theorem of Paris. We deduce that if A is supersolvable, then its Orlik-Terao algebra is Koszul. In certain cases, the algebra is also a complete intersection, and we characterize when this happens.

A geometric deletion-restriction formula

In this paper, we recover the characteristic polynomial of an arrangement of hyperplanes by computing the rational equivalence class of the variety defined by the logarithmic ideal of the arrangement. The logarithmic ideal was introduced in [arXiv:0907.0896v2] in a study of the critical points of the master function. The above result is used to understand the asymptotic behavior the Hilbert series of the logarithmic ideal. As an application, we prove the Solomon-Terao formula under the tame hypothesis by identifying each side of the formula with a certain specialization of the Hilbert series of the logarithmic ideal.
