A Novel Computationally Efficient Group Signature for Anonymous and Secure V2X Communications

The use of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is expected to significantly improve road safety and traffic management. We present an efficient protocol, called the AEE protocol, for protecting data authenticity and user privacy in V2X applications. Our protocol provides event-based likability, which enables messages from a subject vehicle to be linked to a specific event in order to prevent Sybil attacks. Messages on different events are unlinkable to preserve the long-term privacy of vehicles. Moreover, our protocol introduces a new method for generating temporary public keys to reduce computing and transmission overheads. Such a temporary public key is bound with a certain event and is automatically revoked when the event is over. We describe how to apply our protocol in vehicular communications using two exemplar use cases. To further reduce the real-time computational complexity, our protocol enables us to decompose the cryptographic operations into offline processes for complex operations and real-time processes for fast computations.

Trajectory Prediction with Observations of Variable-Length for Motion Planning in Highway Merging scenarios

Accurate trajectory prediction of nearby vehicles is crucial for the safe motion planning of automated vehicles in dynamic driving scenarios such as highway merging. Existing methods cannot initiate prediction for a vehicle unless observed for a fixed duration of two or more seconds. This prevents a fast reaction by the ego vehicle to vehicles that enter its perception range, thus creating safety concerns. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel transformer-based trajectory prediction approach, specifically trained to handle any observation length larger than one frame. We perform a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed method using two large-scale highway trajectory datasets, namely the highD and exiD. In addition, we study the impact of the proposed prediction approach on motion planning and control tasks using extensive merging scenarios from the exiD dataset. To the best of our knowledge, this marks the first instance where such a large-scale highway merging dataset has been employed for this purpose. The results demonstrate that the prediction model achieves state-of-the-art performance on highD dataset and maintains lower prediction error w.r.t. the constant velocity across all observation lengths in exiD. Moreover, it significantly enhances safety, comfort, and efficiency in dense traffic scenarios, as compared to the constant velocity model.

Robust Collaborative 3D Object Detection in Presence of Pose Errors

Collaborative 3D object detection exploits information exchange among multiple agents to enhance accuracy of object detection in presence of sensor impairments such as occlusion. However, in practice, pose estimation errors due to imperfect localization would cause spatial message misalignment and significantly reduce the performance of collaboration. To alleviate adverse impacts of pose errors, we propose CoAlign, a novel hybrid collaboration framework that is robust to unknown pose errors. The proposed solution relies on a novel agent-object pose graph modeling to enhance pose consistency among collaborating agents. Furthermore, we adopt a multi-scale data fusion strategy to aggregate intermediate features at multiple spatial resolutions. Comparing with previous works, which require ground-truth pose for training supervision, our proposed CoAlign is more practical since it doesn't require any ground-truth pose supervision in the training and makes no specific assumptions on pose errors. Extensive evaluation of the proposed method is carried out on multiple datasets, certifying that CoAlign significantly reduce relative localization error and achieving the state of art detection performance when pose errors exist. Code are made available for the use of the research community at https://github.com/yifanlu0227/CoAlign.

Visual Sensor Pose Optimisation Using Visibility Models for Smart Cities

Visual sensor networks are used for monitoring traffic in large cities and are promised to support automated driving in complex road segments. The pose of these sensors, i.e. position and orientation, directly determines the coverage of the driving environment, and the ability to detect and track objects navigating therein. Existing sensor pose optimisation methods either maximise the coverage of ground surfaces, or consider the visibility of target objects (e.g. cars) as binary variables, which fails to represent their degree of visibility. For example, such formulations fail in cluttered environments where multiple objects occlude each other. This paper proposes two novel sensor pose optimisation methods, one based on gradient-ascent and one using integer programming techniques, which maximise the visibility of multiple target objects. Both methods are based on a rendering engine that provides pixel-level visibility information about the target objects, and thus, can cope with occlusions in cluttered environments. The methods are evaluated in a complex driving environment and show improved visibility of target objects when compared to existing methods. Such methods can be used to guide the cost effective deployment of sensor networks in smart cities to improve the safety and efficiency of traffic monitoring systems.

Prediction Based Decision Making for Autonomous Highway Driving

Autonomous driving decision-making is a challenging task due to the inherent complexity and uncertainty in traffic. For example, adjacent vehicles may change their lane or overtake at any time to pass a slow vehicle or to help traffic flow. Anticipating the intention of surrounding vehicles, estimating their future states and integrating them into the decision-making process of an automated vehicle can enhance the reliability of autonomous driving in complex driving scenarios. This paper proposes a Prediction-based Deep Reinforcement Learning (PDRL) decision-making model that considers the manoeuvre intentions of surrounding vehicles in the decision-making process for highway driving. The model is trained using real traffic data and tested in various traffic conditions through a simulation platform. The results show that the proposed PDRL model improves the decision-making performance compared to a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) model by decreasing collision numbers, resulting in safer driving.

Early Lane Change Prediction for Automated Driving Systems Using Multi-Task Attention-based Convolutional Neural Networks

Lane change (LC) is one of the safety-critical manoeuvres in highway driving according to various road accident records. Thus, reliably predicting such manoeuvre in advance is critical for the safe and comfortable operation of automated driving systems. The majority of previous studies rely on detecting a manoeuvre that has been already started, rather than predicting the manoeuvre in advance. Furthermore, most of the previous works do not estimate the key timings of the manoeuvre (e.g., crossing time), which can actually yield more useful information for the decision making in the ego vehicle. To address these shortcomings, this paper proposes a novel multi-task model to simultaneously estimate the likelihood of LC manoeuvres and the time-to-lane-change (TTLC). In both tasks, an attention-based convolutional neural network (CNN) is used as a shared feature extractor from a bird's eye view representation of the driving environment. The spatial attention used in the CNN model improves the feature extraction process by focusing on the most relevant areas of the surrounding environment. In addition, two novel curriculum learning schemes are employed to train the proposed approach. The extensive evaluation and comparative analysis of the proposed method in existing benchmark datasets show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art LC prediction models, particularly considering long-term prediction performance.

Fast and Robust Registration of Partially Overlapping Point Clouds

Real-time registration of partially overlapping point clouds has emerging applications in cooperative perception for autonomous vehicles and multi-agent SLAM. The relative translation between point clouds in these applications is higher than in traditional SLAM and odometry applications, which challenges the identification of correspondences and a successful registration. In this paper, we propose a novel registration method for partially overlapping point clouds where correspondences are learned using an efficient point-wise feature encoder, and refined using a graph-based attention network. This attention network exploits geometrical relationships between key points to improve the matching in point clouds with low overlap. At inference time, the relative pose transformation is obtained by robustly fitting the correspondences through sample consensus. The evaluation is performed on the KITTI dataset and a novel synthetic dataset including low-overlapping point clouds with displacements of up to 30m. The proposed method achieves on-par performance with state-of-the-art methods on the KITTI dataset, and outperforms existing methods for low overlapping point clouds. Additionally, the proposed method achieves significantly faster inference times, as low as 410ms, between 5 and 35 times faster than competing methods. On the $k$ Nearest-Neighbor Path Distance from the Typical Intersection in the Manhattan Poisson Line Cox Process

In this paper, we consider a Cox point process driven by the Manhattan Poisson line process. We calculate the exact cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the path distance (L1 norm) between a randomly selected intersection and the $k$-th nearest node of the Cox process. The CDF is expressed as a sum over the integer partition function $p\!\left(k\right)$, which allows us to numerically evaluate the CDF in a simple manner for practical values of $k$. These distance distributions can be used to study the $k$-coverage of broadcast signals transmitted from a \ac{RSU} located at an intersection in intelligent transport systems (ITS). Also, they can be insightful for network dimensioning in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) systems, because they can yield the exact distribution of network load within a cell, provided that the \ac{RSU} is placed at an intersection. Finally, they can find useful applications in other branches of science like spatial databases, emergency response planning, and districting. We corroborate the applicability of our distance distribution model using the map of an urban area.

Cooperative Perception for 3D Object Detection in Driving Scenarios using Infrastructure Sensors

3D object detection is a common function within the perception system of an autonomous vehicle and outputs a list of 3D bounding boxes around objects of interest. Various 3D object detection methods have relied on fusion of different sensor modalities to overcome limitations of individual sensors. However, occlusion, limited field-of-view and low-point density of the sensor data cannot be reliably and cost-effectively addressed by multi-modal sensing from a single point of view. Alternatively, cooperative perception incorporates information from spatially diverse sensors distributed around the environment as a way to mitigate these limitations. This article proposes two schemes for cooperative 3D object detection using single modality sensors. The early fusion scheme combines point clouds from multiple spatially diverse sensing points of view before detection. In contrast, the late fusion scheme fuses the independently detected bounding boxes from multiple spatially diverse sensors. We evaluate the performance of both schemes, and their hybrid combination, using a synthetic cooperative dataset created in two complex driving scenarios, a T-junction and a roundabout. The evaluation shows that the early fusion approach outperforms late fusion by a significant margin at the cost of higher communication bandwidth. The results demonstrate that cooperative perception can recall more than 95% of the objects as opposed to 30% for single-point sensing in the most challenging scenario. To provide practical insights into the deployment of such system, we report how the number of sensors and their configuration impact the detection performance of the system.

Deep Learning-based Vehicle Behaviour Prediction For Autonomous Driving Applications: A Review

Behaviour prediction function of an autonomous vehicle predicts the future states of the nearby vehicles based on the current and past observations of the surrounding environment. This helps enhance their awareness of the imminent hazards. However, conventional behaviour prediction solutions are applicable in simple driving scenarios that require short prediction horizons. Most recently, deep learning-based approaches have become popular due to their superior performance in more complex environments compared to the conventional approaches. Motivated by this increased popularity, we provide a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art of deep learning-based approaches for vehicle behaviour prediction in this paper. We firstly give an overview of the generic problem of vehicle behaviour prediction and discuss its challenges, followed by classification and review of the most recent deep learning-based solutions based on three criteria: input representation, output type, and prediction method. The paper also discusses the performance of several well-known solutions, identifies the research gaps in the literature and outlines potential new research directions.

Performance Analysis of SWIPT Relaying Systems in the Presence of Impulsive Noise

We develop an analytical framework to characterize the effect of impulsive noise on the performance of relay-assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems. We derive novel closed-form expressions for the pairwise error probability (PEP) considering two variants based on the availability of channel state information (CSI), namely, blind relaying and CSI-assisted relaying. We further consider two energy harvesting (EH) techniques, i.e., instantaneous EH (IEH) and average EH (AEH). Capitalizing on the derived analytical results, we present a detailed numerical investigation of the diversity order for the underlying scenarios under the impulsive noise assumption. For the case when two relays and the availability of a direct link, it is demonstrated that the considered SWIPT system with blind AEH-relaying is able to achieve an asymptotic diversity order of less than 3, which is equal to the diversity order achieved by CSI-assisted IEH-relaying. This result suggests that, by employing the blind AEH relaying, the power consumption of the network can be reduced, due to eliminating the need of CSI estimation. This can be achieved without any performance loss. Our results further show that placing the relays close to the source can significantly mitigate the detrimental effects of impulsive noise. Extensive Monte Carlo simulation results are presented to validate the accuracy of the proposed analytical framework.

Self-Calibration for Massive MIMO with Channel Reciprocity and Channel Estimation Errors

In time-division-duplexing (TDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, channel reciprocity is exploited to overcome the overwhelming pilot training and the feedback overhead. However, in practical scenarios, the imperfections in channel reciprocity, mainly caused by radio-frequency mismatches among the antennas at the base station side, can significantly degrade the system performance and might become a performance limiting factor. In order to compensate for these imperfections, we present and investigate two new calibration schemes for TDD-based massive multi-user MIMO systems, namely, relative calibration and inverse calibration. In particular, the design of the proposed inverse calibration takes into account a compound effect of channel reciprocity error and channel estimation error. We further derive closed-form expressions for the ergodic sum rate, assuming maximum ratio transmissions with the compound effect of both errors. We demonstrate that the inverse calibration scheme outperforms the traditional relative calibration scheme. The proposed analytical results are also verified by simulated illustrations.

Energy Efficiency Analysis of Collaborative Compressive Sensing Scheme in Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, we investigate the energy efficiency of conventional collaborative compressive sensing (CCCS) scheme, focusing on balancing the tradeoff between energy efficiency and detection accuracy in cognitive radio environment. In particular, we derive the achievable throughput, energy consumption and energy efficiency of the CCCS scheme, and formulate an optimization problem to determine the optimal values of parameters which maximize the energy efficiency of the CCCS scheme. The maximization of energy efficiency is proposed as a multi-variable, non-convex optimization problem, and we provide approximations to reduce it to a convex optimization problem. We highlight that errors due to these approximations are negligible. Later, we analytically characterize the tradeoff between dimensionality reduction and collaborative sensing performance of the CCCS scheme -- the implicit tradeoff between energy saving and detection accuracy, and show that the loss due to compression can be recovered through collaboration which improves the overall energy efficiency.

Massive MIMO performance with imperfect channel reciprocity and channel estimation error

Channel reciprocity in time-division duplexing (TDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can be exploited to reduce the overhead required for the acquisition of channel state information (CSI). However, perfect reciprocity is unrealistic in practical systems due to random radio-frequency (RF) circuit mismatches in uplink and downlink channels. This can result in a significant degradation in the performance of linear precoding schemes, which are sensitive to the accuracy of the CSI. In this paper, we model and analyse the impact of RF mismatches on the performance of linear precoding in a TDD multi-user massive MIMO system, by taking the channel estimation error into considerations. We use the truncated Gaussian distribution to model the RF mismatch, and derive closed-form expressions of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for maximum ratio transmission and zero forcing precoders. We further investigate the asymptotic performance of the derived expressions, to provide valuable insights into the practical system designs, including useful guidelines for the selection of the effective precoding schemes. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the proposed analytical results.

Hybrid Beamforming with Reduced Number of Phase Shifters for Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, two novel hybrid beamforming methods are proposed to reduce the cost and power consumption of hybrid beamformers with subconnected phase shifter network structure in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. This is achieved by replacing some of the phase shifters with switches which, in general, are cheaper and have lower power consumption compared to phase shifters. The proposed methods and the closed-form expressions of their performance are derived according to the properties of the elements of the singular vectors of the channel matrix. In the first approach, it is shown that by combining the subconnected phase shifter network with a fully-connected switch architecture, the number of the phase shifters can be reduced up to 50\% while the spectral efficiency is preserved. Then, in order to simplify the structure of the switch network, the fully-connected switches is replaced by subconnected switch network, e.g. binary switches. The analytical and simulation results indicate that just by using 25% of phase shifters 90% spectral efficiency can be achieved. Finally, simulation results indicate that similar behavior is observed when the wireless channel is considered to be sparse or correlated.

Unified Analysis of SWIPT Relay Networks with Noncoherent Modulation

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) relay networks represent a paradigm shift in the development of wireless networks, enabling simultaneous radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting (EH) and information processing. Different from conventional SWIPT relaying schemes, which typically assume the availability of perfect channel state information (CSI), here we consider the application of noncoherent modulation in order to avoid the need of instantaneous CSI estimation/tracking and minimise the energy consumption. We propose a unified and comprehensive analytical framework for the analysis of time switching (TS) and power splitting (PS) receiver architectures with the amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol. In particular, we adopt a moments-based approach to derive novel expressions for the outage probability, achievable throughput, and average symbol error rate (ASER) of the considered SWIPT system. We quantify the impact of several system parameters, involving relay location, energy conversion efficiency, and TS and PS ratio assumptions, imposed on the EH relay terminal. Our results reveal that the throughput performance of the TS protocol is superior to that of the PS protocol at lower receive signal-to-noise (SNR) values, which is in contrast to the point-to-point SWIPT systems. An extensive Monte Carlo simulation study is presented to corroborate the proposed analysis.

Hybrid Beamforming for Large Antenna Arrays with Phase Shifter Selection

This paper proposes an asymptotically optimal hybrid beamforming solution for large antenna arrays by exploiting the properties of the singular vectors of the channel matrix. It is shown that the elements of the channel matrix with Rayleigh fading follow a normal distribution when large antenna arrays are employed. The proposed beamforming algorithm is effective in both sparse and rich propagation environments, and is applicable for both point-to-point and multiuser scenarios. In addition, a closed-form expression and a lower-bound for the achievable rates are derived when analog and digital phase shifters are employed. It is shown that the performance of the hybrid beamformers using phase shifters with more than 2-bits resolution is comparable with analog phase shifting. A novel phase shifter selection scheme that reduces the power consumption at the phase shifter network is proposed when the wireless channel is modeled by Rayleigh fading. Using this selection scheme, the spectral efficiency can be increased as the power consumption in the phase shifter network reduces. Compared to the scenario that all of the phase shifters are in operation, the simulation results indicate that the spectral efficiency increases when up to 50% of phase shifters are turned off.

A Novel Antenna Selection Scheme for Spatially Correlated Massive MIMO Uplinks with Imperfect Channel Estimation

We propose a new antenna selection scheme for a massive MIMO system with a single user terminal and a base station with a large number of antennas. We consider a practical scenario where there is a realistic correlation among the antennas and imperfect channel estimation at the receiver side. The proposed scheme exploits the sparsity of the channel matrix for the effective selection of a limited number of antennas. To this end, we compute a sparse channel matrix by minimising the mean squared error. This optimisation problem is then solved by the well-known orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm. Widely used models for spatial correlation among the antennas and channel estimation errors are considered in this work. Simulation results demonstrate that when the impacts of spatial correlation and imperfect channel estimation introduced, the proposed scheme in the paper can significantly reduce complexity of the receiver, without degrading the system performance compared to the maximum ratio combining.
