Singular Value Decomposition, Hessian Errors, and Linear Algebra of Non-parametric Extraction of Partons from DIS

By singular value decomposition (SVD) of a numerically singular Hessian matrix and a numerically singular system of linear equations for the experimental data (accumulated in the respective ${χ^2}$ function) and constraints, least square solutions and their propagated errors for the non-parametric extraction of Partons from $F_2$ are obtained. SVD and its physical application is phenomenologically described in the two cases. Among the subjects covered are: identification and properties of the boundary between the two subsets of ordered eigenvalues corresponding to range and null space, and the eigenvalue structure of the null space of the singular matrix, including a second boundary separating the smallest eigenvalues of essentially no information, in a particular case. The eigenvector-eigenvalue structure of "redundancy and smallness" of the errors of two pdf sets, in our simplified Hessian model, is described by a secondary manifestation of deeper null space, in the context of SVD.

Commuting Matrix Solutions of PQCD Evolution Equations

A method of obtaining parton distributions directly from data is revealed in this series. In the process, the first step would be developing appropriate matrix solutions of the evolution equations in $x$ space. A division into commuting and non-commuting matrix solutions has been made. Here, well-developed commuting matrix solutions are presented. Results for finite LO evolution match those of standard LO sets. There is a real potential of doing non-parametric data analysis.

Phenomenology of g_1(x) in the Observed Small-x Region

We examine the behaviour of the polarised structure function data for g_1(x) in the region of small x (~0.01 to 0.1) for the various available targets (proton, neutron and deuteron) with the aim of clarifying what may be safely deduced with regard to the relation of the currently attained small-x region and the asymptotic behaviour as x -> 0. We find that fits using a single power-like term are susceptible to the isospin combination used. Double-power fits are more stable and also provide some evidence for an underlying SU(2) symmetry of the structure functions.

x-Dependent Polarized Parton Distributions

Using QCD motivated and phenomenological considerations, we construct x- dependent polarized parton distributions, which evolve under GLAP evolution, satisfy DIS data and are within positivity constraints. Each flavor is done separately and the overall set can be used to predict polarization asymmetries for various processes. We perform our NLO analysis strictly in x space, avoiding difficulties in moment inversion. Small-x results and other physical considerations are discussed.

Nucleon Spin Distributions From Recent SMC, SLAC and DESY Data

We have extracted polarized nucleon distributions from recent data at CERN, SLAC and DESY. The flavor-dependent valence and sea quark spin distributions are determined for each experiment. The up and down distributions are comparable, but the strange sea contribution determined from different experiments do not agree, even including higher order corrections. Only experiments sensitive to the polarized gluon and sea will reconcile these differences.
