Critical exponents of finite temperature chiral phase transition in soft-wall AdS/QCD models

Criticality of chiral phase transition at finite temperature is investigated in a soft-wall AdS/QCD model with $SU_L(N_f)\times SU_R(N_f)$ symmetry, especially for $N_f=2,3$ and $N_f=2+1$. It is shown that in quark mass plane($m_{u/d}-m_s$) chiral phase transition is second order at a certain critical line, by which the whole plane is divided into first order and crossover regions. The critical exponents $β$ and $δ$, describing critical behavior of chiral condensate along temperature axis and light quark mass axis, are extracted both numerically and analytically. The model gives the critical exponents of the values $β=\frac{1}{2}, δ=3$ and $β=\frac{1}{3}, δ=3$ for $N_f=2$ and $N_f=3$ respectively. For $N_f=2+1$, in small strange quark mass($m_s$) region, the phase transitions for strange quark and $u/d$ quarks are strongly coupled, and the critical exponents are $β=\frac{1}{3},δ=3$; when $m_s$ is larger than $m_{s,t}=0.290\rm{GeV}$, the dynamics of light flavors($u,d$) and strange quarks decoupled and the critical exponents for $\bar{u}u$ and $\bar{d}d$ becomes $β=\frac{1}{2},δ=3$, exactly the same as $N_f=2$ result and the mean field result of 3D Ising model; between the two segments, there is a tri-critical point at $m_{s,t}=0.290\rm{GeV}$, at which $β=0.250,δ=4.975$. In some sense, the current results is still at mean field level, and we also showed the possibility to go beyond mean field approximation by including the higher power of scalar potential and the temperature dependence of dilaton field, which might be reasonable in a full back-reaction model. The current study might also provide reasonable constraints on constructing a realistic holographic QCD model, which could describe both chiral dynamics and glue-dynamics correctly.

QCD critical end point from a realistic PNJL model

With parameters fixed by critical temperature and equation of state at zero baryon chemical potential, a realistic Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (rPNJL) model predicts a critical end point of chiral phase transition at $(μ_B^E= 720 {\rm MeV}, T^E=93 {\rm MeV})$. The extracted freeze-out line from heavy ion collisions is close to the chiral phase transition boundary in the rPNJL model, and the kurtosis $κσ^2$ of baryon number fluctuations from the rPNJL model along the experimental freeze-out line agrees well with the BES-I measurement. Our analysis shows that the dip structure of measured $κσ^2$ is determined by the relationship between the freeze-out line and chiral phase transition line at low baryon density region, and the peak structure can be regarded as a clean signature for the existence of CEP.

Holographic description of total hadronic cross sections at high energies

We investigate the hadron-hadron total cross sections at high energies in the framework of holographic QCD. In our model setup, the involved strong interaction is described by the Brower-Polchinski-Strassler-Tan Pomeron exchange kernel, and the two form factors are obtained from the bottom-up AdS/QCD models. We show that the resulting nucleon-nucleon total cross section is consistent with the experimental data recently measured by the TOTEM collaboration at the LHC. As examples to see the general versatility of the model, we also present our analysis on the pion-nucleon and pion-pion cases, which can be predicted because all the adjustable parameters are fixed by the nucleon-nucleon data.

Charged pion condensation under parallel electromagnetic fields

The formation of charged pion condensate under parallel electromagnetic fields is studied within the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The technique of Schwinger proper time method is extended to explore the quantity locating in the off-diagonal flavor space, i.e., charged pion. We obtain the associated effective potential as a function of the strength of the electromagnetic fields and find out that it contains a sextic term which possibly induce weakly first order phase transition. Dependence of pion condensation on model parameters is investigated.

Nonperturbative Renormalization Group for the Landau-de Gennes Model

We studied the nematic isotropic phase transition by applying the functional renormalization group to the Landau-de Gennes model. We derived the flow equations for the effective potential as well as the cubic and quartic "couplings" and the anomalous dimension. We then solved the coupled flow equations on a grid using Newton Raphson method. A first order phase transition is observed. We also investigated the nematic isotropic puzzle (the NI puzzle) in this paper. We obtained the NI transition temperature difference ${T_c-T^*}=5.85K$ with sizable improvement over previous results.

Fluid/gravity correspondence: Second order transport coefficients in compactified D4-branes

We develop the boundary derivative expansion (BDE) formalism of fluid/gravity correspondence to nonconformal version through the compactified, near-extremal black D4-brane. We offer an explicit calculation of 9 second order transport coefficients, i.e., the $τ_π,~τ_π^*,~τ_Π,~λ_{1,2,3}$ and $ξ_{1,2,3}$ for the strongly coupled, uncharged and nonconformal relativistic fluid which is the holographic dual of compactified, near extremal black D4-brane. We also show that the nonconformal fluid considered in this work is free of causal problem and admits the Haack-Yarom relation $4λ_1+λ_2=2ητ_π$.

Neutral and charged (pseduo)scalar mesons and diquarks under magnetic fields

We investigate both (pseudo)scalar mesons and diquarks in the presence of external magnetic field in the framework of the two-flavored Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, where mesons and diquarks are constructed by infinite sum of quark-loop chains by using random phase approximation. The polarization function of the quark-loop is calculated to the leading order of $1/N_c$ expansion by taking the quark propagator in the Landau level representation. We systematically investigate the masses behaviors of scalar $σ$ meson, neutral and charged pions as well as the scalar diquarks, with respect to the magnetic field strength at finite temperature and chemical potential. It is shown that the numerical results of both neutral and charged pions are consistent with the lattice QCD simulations. The mass of the charge neutral pion keeps almost a constant under the magnetic field, which is preserved by the remnant symmetry of QCD$\times$QED in the vacuum. The mass of the charge neutral scalar $σ$ is around two times quark mass and increases with the magnetic field due to the magnetic catalysis effect, which is an typical example showing that the polarized internal quark structure cannot be neglected when we consider the meson properties under magnetic field. For the charged particles, the one quark-antiquark loop contribution to the charged $π^{\pm}$ increases essentially with the increase of magnetic fields due to the magnetic catalysis of the polarized quarks. However, the one quark-quark loop contribution to the scalar diquark mass is negative comparing with the point-particle result and the loop effect is small.

Gravitation waves from QCD and electroweak phase transitions

We investigate the gravitation waves produced from QCD and electroweak phase transitions in the early universe by using a 5-dimension holographic QCD model and a holographic technicolor model. The dynamical holographic QCD model is to describe the pure gluon system, where a first order confinement-deconfinement phase transition can happen at the critical temperature around 250 ${\rm MeV}$. The minimal holographic technicolor model is introduced to model the strong dynamics of electroweak, it can give a first order electroweak phase transition at the critical temperature around 100-360 ${\rm GeV}$. We find that for both GW signals produced from QCD and EW phase transitions, in the peak frequency region, the dominant contribution comes from the sound waves, while away from the peak frequency region the contribution from the bubble collision is dominant. The peak frequency of gravitation wave determined by the QCD phase transition is located around $10^{-7}$ Hz which is within the detectability of FAST and SKA, and the peak frequency of gravitational wave predicted by EW phase transition is located at $0.002-0.007$ Hz, which might be detectable by BBO, DECIGO, LISA and ELISA.

Locating the QCD critical end point through the peaked baryon number susceptibilities along the freeze-out line

We investigate the baryon number susceptibilities up to fourth order along different freeze-out lines in a holographic QCD model with the critical end point (CEP), and we propose that the peaked baryon number susceptibilities along the freeze-out line can be used as a clean signature to locate the CEP in the QCD phase diagram. On the temperature and baryon chemical potential plane, the ratio of the baryon number susceptibilities (up to fourth order) forms a ridge along the phase boundary, and develops a sword shape mountain standing upright around the CEP in a narrow and oblate region. This feature is model independent and universal if the CEP exists. The measurement of the baryon number susceptibilities from heavy-ion collision experiment is along the freeze-out line. If the freeze-out line crosses the foot of the CEP mountain, then one can observe the peaked baryon number susceptibilities along the freeze-out line, and the kurtosis of the baryon number distributions has the tallest magnitude. The data from the first phase of beam energy scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions indicates that a peak of the kurtosis of the baryon number distribution would show up at the collision energy around 5 GeV, which suggests that the freeze-out line crosses the foot of the CEP mountain and the summit of the CEP would be located nearby around the collision energy of 3 GeV.

Chiral vortical effect from the compactified D4-branes with smeared D0-brane charge

By using the boundary derivative expansion formalism of fluid/gravity correspondence, we study the chiral vortical effect from the compactified D4-branes with smeared D0-brane charge. This background corresponds to a strongly coupled, nonconformal relativistic fluid with a conserved vector current. The presence of the chiral vortical effect is induced by the addition of a Chern-Simons term in the bulk action. Except that the non-dissipative anomalous viscous coefficient and the sound speed rely only on the chemical potential, most of the other thermal and hydrodynamical quantities of the first order depend both on the temperature and the chemical potential. According to our result, the way that the chiral vortical effect coefficient depends on the chemical potential seems irrelevant with whether the relativistic fluid is conformal or not. Stability analysis shows that this anomalous relativistic fluid is stable and the doping of the smeared D0-brane charge will slow down the sound speed.

Chiral phase transition of QCD with $N_f=2+1$ flavors from holography

Chiral phase transition for three-flavor $N_f=2+1$ QCD with $m_u=m_d\neq m_s$ is investigated in a modified soft-wall holographic QCD model. Solving temperature dependent chiral condensates from equations of motion of the modified soft-wall model, we extract the quark mass dependence of the order of chiral phase transition in the case of $N_f=2+1$, and the result is in agreement with the "Colombia Plot", which is summarized from lattice simulations and other non-perturbative methods. First order phase transition is observed around the three flavor chiral limit $m_{u/d}=0, m_{s}=0$, while at sufficient large quark masses it turns to be a crossover phase transition. The first order and crossover regions are separated by a second order phase transition line. The second order line is divided into two parts by the $m_{u/d}=m_s$ line, and the $m_s$ dependence of the transition temperature in these two parts are totally contrast, which might indicate that the two parts are governed by different universality classes.

We introduce the 5-dimension dynamical holographic QCD model, which is constructed in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework with the dilaton background field $Φ$ and the scalar field $X$ responsible for the gluodynamics and chiral dynamics, respectively. We review our results on the hadron spectra including the glueball and light meson spectra, QCD phase transitions and transport properties in the framework of the dynamical holographic QCD model.

Inverse Magnetic Catalysis in the Soft-Wall Model of AdS/QCD

Magnetic effects on chiral phase transition have been investigated in a modified soft-wall AdS/QCD model, in which the dilaton field is taken to be negative at the ultraviolet region and positive at the infrared region as in Phys.Rev.D93(2016),101901 and JHEP1604(2016)036. The magnetic field is introduced into the background geometry by solving the Einstein-Maxwell system. After embedding the magnetized background geometry into the modified soft-wall model, the magnetic field dependent behavior of chiral condensate is worked out numerically. It is found that, in the chiral limit, the chiral phase transition remains as a second order at finite magnetic field $B$, while the symmetry restoration temperature and chiral condensate decrease with the increasing of magnetic field in small $B$ region. When including finite quark mass effect, the phase transition turns to be a crossover one, and the transition temperature still decreases with increasing magnetic field $B$ when $B$ is not very large. In this sense, inverse magnetic catalysis effect is observed in this modified soft-wall AdS/QCD model.

Photon polarization tensor in a magnetized plasma system

We investigate the photon polarization tensor at finite temperature in the presence of a static and homogeneous external magnetic field. In our scheme, the Matsubara frequency summation is performed after Poisson summation, which will be taken easily and convergent quickly in the frame of proper time representation. Moreover, the dependence of Landau levels is expressed explicitly. It demonstrates the convergence of summing Landau levels as it has to be. Consequently, there is no necessary to truncate the Landau level in a numerical estimation. At zero temperature, the Lowest Landau Level (LLL) approximation is analytically satisfied for the imaginary parts of the vacuum photon polarization tensor. Our results examine that, the LLL approximation is not enough for the thermal photon polarization tensor, it gains the contribution not only from the lowest Landau level but also up to the finite-$n$ levels. Such large imaginary ones only show up at finite temperatures, which is the so called Landau damping. It originates from the absorption of soft fields by hard plasma constituents, which is a universal feature of plasma systems. Finally, it was argued that the summation of Matsubara frequency is not commuted with Landau level ones, such conjecture is excluded in our calculations.

Possible formation of high temperature superconductor at early stage of heavy-ion collisions

We investigate the effect of the inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC) on the charged $ρ$ meson condensation at finite temperature in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, where mesons are calculated to the leading order of $1/N_c$ expansion by summing up infinity quark-loops. IMC for chiral condensate has been considered in three different ways, i.e. fitting Lattice data, using the running coupling constant and introducing the chiral chemical potential, respectively. It is observed that, with no IMC effect included, the critical magnetic field $eB_c$ for charged $ρ$ condensation increases monotonically with the temperature. However, including IMC substantially affects the polarized charged $ρ$ condensation around the critical temperature $T_c$ of chiral phase transition, the critical magnetic field $eB_c$ for charged $ρ$ condensation decreases with the temperature firstly, reaches to a minimum value around $T_c$, then increases with the temperature. Our calculation indicates that the charged $ρ$ condensation can exist in the temperature region of $1-1.5 T_c$ with critical magnetic field $eB_c\sim 0.15-0.3 {\rm GeV}^2$, which suggests that high temperature superconductor might be created through non-central heavy ion collisions at LHC energies. We also show that a growing electric conductivity in early stage of non-central heavy-ion collisions substantially delays the decay of strong magnetic field, which is helpful for the formation of the high temperature superconductor.

Fluid/gravity correspondence: A nonconformal realization in compactified D4 branes

We develop the framework of boundary derivative expansion (BDE) formalism of fluid/gravity correspondence in compactified D4-brane system, which is a nonconformal background used in top-down holographic QCD models. Such models contain the D4-D6 model and the Sakai-Sugimoto (SS) model, with the background of the compactified black D4 branes under the near horizon limit. By using the dimensional reduction technique, we derive a 5D Einstein gravity minimally coupled with 3 scalar fields from the 10D D4-brane background. Following the BDE formalism of fluid/gravity correspondence in the conformal background, we directly derive all the first order transport coefficients for nonconformal gluonic matter. The results of the ratio of the bulk to shear viscosity and the sound speed agree with those obtained from the Green-Kubo method. This agreement guarantees the validity of the BDE formalism of fluid/gravity duality in the nonconformal D-brane background, which can be used to calculate the second order transport coefficients in nonconformal background.

Chiral Phase Transition in the Soft-Wall Model of AdS/QCD

We investigate the chiral phase transition in the soft-wall model of AdS/QCD at zero chemical potential for two-flavor and three-flavor cases, respectively. We show that there is no spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the original soft-wall model. After detailed analysis, we find that in order to realize chiral symmetry breaking and restoration, both profiles for the scalar potential and the dilaton field are essential. The scalar potential determines the possible solution structure of the chiral condensate, except the mass term, it takes another quartic term for the two-flavor case, and for the three-flavor case, one has to take into account an extra cubic term due to the t'Hooft determinant interaction. The profile of the dilaton field reflects the gluodynamics, which is negative at a certain ultraviolet scale and approaches positive quadratic behavior at far infrared region. With this set-up, the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum and its restoration at finite temperature can be realized perfectly. In the two-flavor case, it gives a second order chiral phase transition in the chiral limit, while the transition turns to be a crossover for any finite quark mass. In the case of three-flavor, the phase transition becomes a first order one in the chiral limit, while above sufficient large quark mass it turns to be a crossover again. This scenario agrees exactly with the current understanding on chiral phase transition from lattice QCD and other effective model studies.

Two-gluon and trigluon glueballs from dynamical holography QCD

We study the scalar, vector and tensor two-gluon and trigluon glueball spectra in the framework of 5-dimension dynamical holographic QCD model, where the metric structure is deformed self-consistently by the dilaton field. For comparison, the glueball spectra are also calculated in the hard-wall and soft-wall holographic QCD models. In order to distinguish glueballs with even and odd parities, we introduce the positive and negative coupling between the dilaton field and glueballs, and for higher spin glueballs, we introduce a deformed 5-dimension mass. With this set-up, there is only one free parameter from the quadratic dilaton profile in the dynamical holographic QCD model, which is fixed by the scalar glueball spectra. It is found that the two-gluon glueball spectra produced in the dynamical holographic QCD model are in good agreement with lattice data. Among six trigluon glueballs, the produced masses for $1^{\pm -}$ and $2^{--}$ are in good agreement with lattice data, and the produced masses for $0^{--}$, $0^{+-}$ and $2^{+-}$ are around 1.5 {\rm GeV} lighter than lattice results. This result might indicate that the three trigluon glueballs of $0^{--}$, $0^{+-}$ and $2^{+-}$ are dominated by three-gluon condensate contribution.
