Irreducible Multiplets of Three-Quark Operators on the Lattice: Controlling Mixing under Renormalization

High luminosity accelerators have greatly increased the interest in semi-exclusive and exclusive reactions involving nucleons. The relevant theoretical information is contained in the nucleon wavefunction and can be parametrized by moments of the nucleon distribution amplitudes, which in turn are linked to matrix elements of three-quark operators. These can be calculated from first principles in lattice QCD. However, on the lattice the problems of operator mixing under renormalization are rather involved. In a systematic approach we investigate this issue in depth. Using the spinorial symmetry group of the hypercubic lattice we derive irreducibly transforming three-quark operators, which allow us to control the mixing pattern.

A status report of the QCDSF $N_f=2+1$ Project

We report about on-going simulations of $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD. We use a tadpole improved Symanzik gauge action and stout link smeared Wilson fermions with a clover term. We employ the Hasenbusch trick for the degenerate u- and d-quarks, and the RHMC algorithm for the simulation of the strange quark.

Transverse momentum distributions of quarks from the lattice using extended gauge links

We present preliminary numerical studies in Lattice QCD related to the intrinsic transverse momentum distribution of partons in the nucleon. We employ non-local operators, consisting of spatially separated quark creation and annihilation operators connected by a straight Wilson line. A clear signal is already obtained from a small number of configurations at a pion mass of about 600 MeV. As an example, we demonstrate that we can obtain the first x-moment of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function f_1^{n=1}(k_T) from our data. Our results, which are not renormalized, show a Gaussian-like distribution. The root mean squared transverse momentum is about 560 MeV for a Gaussian fit, close to phenomenological values.

Quenched QCD with fixed-point and chirally improved fermion

In this contribution we present results from quenched QCD simulations with the parameterized fixed-point (FP) and the chirally improved (CI) Dirac operator. Both these operators are approximate solutions of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation and have good chiral properties. We focus our discussion on observables sensitive to chirality. In particular we explore pion masses down to 210 MeV in light hadron spectroscopy, quenched chiral logs, the pion decay constant and the pion scattering length. We discuss finite volume effects, scaling properties of the FP and CI operators and performance issues in their numerical implementation.

A comprehensive picture of topological excitations in finite temperature lattice QCD

We study spectra, localization properties and local chirality of eigenvectors of the lattice Dirac operator. We analyze ensembles of quenched SU(3) configurations on both sides of the QCD phase transition. Our Dirac operator is a systematic expansion in path length of a solution of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation. Analyzing the finite volume behavior of our observables and their scaling with the gauge coupling we come up with a consistent picture of topological excitations on both sides of the QCD phase transition. Our results support the interpretation of the dominant gauge field excitations seen by the Dirac operator as a fluid of instanton-like objects.

Comparing lattice Dirac operators in smooth instanton backgrounds

We compare the behavior of different lattice Dirac operators in gauge backgrounds which are lattice discretizations of a classical instanton. In particular we analyze the standard Wilson operator, a chirally improved Dirac operator and the overlap operators constructed from these two operators. We discuss the flow of real eigenvalues as a function of the instanton size. An analysis of the eigenvectors shows that overlap fermions with the Wilson operator as input operator have difficulties with reproducing the continuum zero mode already for moderately small instantons. This problem is greatly reduced when using the chirally improved operator for the overlap projection.

Chirally improved Dirac operators: Studying the sensitivity to topological excitations for zero and finite temperature

We discuss the construction and properties of an approximate solution of the Ginsparg-Wilson equation, the so-called chirally improved lattice Dirac operator. In particular we study the behavior of its eigenmodes in smooth instanton backgrounds as well as for thermalized gauge configurations on both sides of the QCD phase transition. We compare with results from other Dirac operators including the overlap operator. The results support the picture of chiral symmetry breaking being closely related to instantons.

Unstable particles in finite volume: The broken phase of the $4$-d $O(4)$ non-linear $σ$-model

According to a proposal of Lüscher it is possible to determine elastic scattering phases in infinite volume from the energy spectrum of two-particle states in a periodic box. We demonstrate the applicability of this method in the broken phase of the 4-dimensional $O(4)$ non-linear $σ$-model in a Monte-Carlo study on finite lattices. This non-perturbative approach also permits the study of unstable particles, the $\sg$-particle in our case. We observe the $\sg$-resonance and extract its mass and its width.

Scaling analysis of the O(4)-symmetric $Φ^4$-theory in the broken phase

We study the $O(4)$-symmetric $ Φ^4 $-theory in the scaling region of the broken phase using the standard and a Symanzik improved action with infinite bare self-coupling $λ$. A high precision Monte Carlo simulation is performed by applying the reflection cluster algorithm. Employing the histogram method we analytically continue to a sequence of values of the hopping parameter $κ$ neighbouring the actually simulated ones. In the investigated vicinity of the critical point $κ_{c}$ finite volume effects affecting, e.g., the determination of the field expectation value $Σ$ and the mass $m_σ$ of the $σ$-particle are very well described by 1-loop renormalized perturbation theory. We carry out a detailed scaling analysis on a high level of precision. Finally we discuss the upper bound on the Higgs mass for both kinds of actions.
