Nilpotent probability of compact groups

Let $k$ be any positive integer and $G$ a compact (Hausdorff) group. Let $\mf{np}_k(G)$ denote the probability that $k+1$ randomly chosen elements $x_1,\dots,x_{k+1}$ satisfy $[x_1,x_2,\dots,x_{k+1}]=1$. We study the following problem: If $\mf{np}_k(G)>0$ then, does there exist an open nilpotent subgroup of class at most $k$? The answer is positive for profinite groups and we give a new proof. We also prove that the connected component $G^0$ of $G$ is abelian and there exists a closed normal nilpotent subgroup $N$ of class at most $k$ such that $G^0N$ is open in $G$.

Profinite groups with many elements of bounded order

Lévai and Pyber proposed the following as a conjecture: Let $G$ be a profinite group such that the set of solutions of the equation $x^n=1$ has positive Haar measure. Then $G$ has an open subgroup $H$ and an element $t$ such that all elements of the coset $tH$ have order dividing $n$ (see Problem 14.53 of [The Kourovka Notebook, No. 19, 2019]). \\ We define a constant $c_n$ for all finite groups and prove that the latter conjecture is equivalent with a conjecture saying $c_n<1$. Using the latter equivalence we observe that correctness of Lévai and Pyber conjecture implies the existence of the universal upper bound $\frac{1}{1-c_n}$ on the index of generalized Hughes-Thompson subgroup $H_n$ of finite groups whenever it is non-trivial. It is known that the latter is widely open even for all primes $n=p\geq 5$. For odd $n$ we also prove that Lévai and Pyber conjecture is equivalent to show that $c_n$ is less than $1$ whenever $c_n$ is only computed on finite solvable groups. \\ The validity of the conjecture has been proved in [Arch. Math. (Basel) 75 (2000) 1-7] for $n=2$. Here we confirm the conjecture for $n=3$.

Here we study the conjecture for compact groups $G$ which are not necessarily profinite and $n=3$; we show that in the latter case the group $G$ contains an open normal $2$-Engel subgroup.

Two-sided configuration equivalence and isomorphism

The concept of configuration was first introduced to give a characterization for the amenability of groups. Then the concept of two-sided configuration was suggested to provide normality to study the group structures more efficiently. It has been interesting that for which groups, two-sided configuration equivalence would imply isomorphism. We introduce a class of groups, containing polycyclic and FC groups, which for them, the notions of two-sided configuration equivalence and isomorphism coincide.

Solubility of groups can be characterized by configuration

The concept of configuration was first introduced by Rosenblatt and Willis to give a characterization for the amenability of groups. We show that group properties of being soluble or FC can be characterized by configuration sets. Then we investigate some condition on configuration pairs, which leads to isomorphism. We introduce a somewhat different notion of configuration equivalence, namely strong configuration equivalence, and prove that strong configuration equivalence coincides with isomorphism.

Configuration Equivalence is not Equivalent to Isomorphism

Giving a condition for the the amenability of groups, Rosenblatt and Willis, first introduced the concept of configuration. From the beginning of the theory, the question whether the concept of configuration equivalence coincides with the concept of group isomorphism was posed. We negatively answer this open question by introducing two non-isomorphic, solvable and hence amenable groups which are configuration equivalent. Also, we will study some types of subgroups in configuration equivalent groups. In particular, we will prove this conjecture, due to Rosenblatt and Willis, that configuration equivalent groups, both include the free non-Abelian group of same rank or not. Finally, we prove that two-sided equivalent groups have same class numbers.
