Quantum-logic spectroscopy of forbidden vibrational transitions in single nitrogen molecular ions

Electric-dipole forbidden spectroscopic transitions in atoms form the basis of many advanced implementations of quantum computers, atomic clocks and quantum sensors. Coherently addressing such transitions in molecules which are among the most ubiquitous and versatile quantum objects has remained a long-standing challenge owing to their complex energy-level structure. Here, we report the search, observation and coherent manipulation of electric-quadrupole rotational-vibrational transitions in single trapped molecules using a quantum-logic-spectroscopy protocol. We identified individual hyperfine-Zeeman-rotational components of the fundamental vibrational transition of the nitrogen molecular ion, N$_2^+$, and performed coherent population transfer between energy levels. Our work opens up new perspectives for precision molecular spectroscopy, for high-fidelity qubits encoded in the rotational-vibrational motion of molecules, for precise infrared molecular clocks and for searches for new physics

Precise frequencies of H$_2^{~16}$O lines protected for radio astronomy

Precise frequency values have been determined for H$_2^{~16}$O radio lines appearing in protected line lists of the International Astronomical Union and the Panel on Frequency Allocations of the US National Academy of Sciences. The improved precision is attributable to a spectroscopic network built from a large set of near-infrared Lamb-dip lines augmented with a handful of ultrahigh-accuracy rotational transitions. The ultraprecise H$_2^{~16}$O network contains 376 Lamb-dip lines recorded previously via our frequency-comb locked cavity-enhanced spectrometer. During the present study, altogether 55 target lines have been (re)measured at high accuracy. Due to our network-assisted measurements, the accuracy has been significantly improved with respect to previous direct radio-frequency measurements for all the protected lines of H$_2^{~16}$O above 750 GHz. Furthermore, 43 of these protected transitions now benefit from the accuracy of the new near-infrared Lamb dips reported in this paper.

Letokhov-Chebotayev intracavity trapping spectroscopy of H$_2$

In the early days of laser spectroscopy Letokhov and Chebotayev proposed a scheme for measuring narrow spectral lines where the resolution is not restricted to Doppler effects because the molecules are entrained in a standing-wave light field. Now, such one-dimensional trapping in the intensity maxima of an intracavity field, slightly detuned from resonance, is experimentally demonstrated in the measurement of the very weak S(0) (2-0) quadrupole overtone transition in H$_2$ at 1189 nm. The trapping manifests as an extremely narrow absorption feature at the predicted zero-recoil position, a 70 kHz shift from the blue-recoil component observed in Lamb-dip spectroscopy. A quantitative analysis of the saturation and trapping conditions supports the findings.
