K-rings of smooth toric varieties via piecewise-exponential functions

We describe an explicit presentation of the ring of integral piecewise-exponential functions on a unimodular fan as a quotient of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the fan. This gives rise to a presentation of K-rings of smooth toric varieties that is parallel to the well-known presentation of integral Chow rings as quotients of Stanley-Reisner rings.

Tropicalizations of locally symmetric varieties

This paper provides a rigorous study of tropicalizations of locally symmetric varieties. We give applications beyond tropical geometry, to the cohomology of moduli spaces as well as to the cohomology of arithmetic groups. We study two cases in detail: the special unitary case, and the case of level structures on the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of abelian varieties.

Piecewise-exponential functions and Ehrhart fans

This paper studies rings of integral piecewise-exponential functions on rational fans. Motivated by lattice-point counting in polytopes, we introduce a special class of unimodular fans called Ehrhart fans, whose rings of integral piecewise-exponential functions admit a canonical linear functional that behaves like a lattice-point count. In particular, we verify that all complete unimodular fans are Ehrhart and that the Ehrhart functional agrees with lattice-point counting in corresponding polytopes, which can otherwise be interpreted as holomorphic Euler characteristics of vector bundles on smooth toric varieties. We also prove that all Bergman fans of matroids are Ehrhart and that the Ehrhart functional in this case agrees with the Euler characteristic of matroids, introduced recently by Larson, Li, Payne, and Proudfoot. A key property that we prove about the Ehrharticity of fans is that it only depends on the support of the fan, not on the fan structure, thus providing a uniform framework for studying K-rings and Euler characteristics of complete fans and Bergman fans simultaneously.

Hopf algebras in the cohomology of $\mathcal{A}_g$, $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$, and $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$

We describe a bigraded cocommutative Hopf algebra structure on the weight zero compactly supported rational cohomology of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. By relating the primitives for the coproduct to graph cohomology, we deduce that $\dim H^{2g+k}_c(\mathcal{A}_g)$ grows at least exponentially with $g$ for $k = 0$ and for all but finitely many positive integers $k$. Our proof relies on a new result of independent interest; we use a filtered variant of the Waldhausen construction to show that Quillen's spectral sequence abutting to the cohomology of $BK(\mathbb{Z})$ is a spectral sequence of Hopf algebras. From the same construction, we also deduce that $\dim H^{\binom{n}{2} - n - k}(\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z}))$ grows at least exponentially with $n$, for $k = -1$ and for all but finitely many non-negative integers $k$.

On the weight zero compactly supported cohomology of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$

For $g\ge 2$ and $n\ge 0$, let $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}\subset \mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ denote the complex moduli stack of $n$-marked smooth hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$. A normal crossings compactification of this space is provided by the theory of pointed admissible $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-covers. We explicitly determine the resulting dual complex, and we use this to define a graph complex which computes the weight zero compactly supported cohomology of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$. Using this graph complex, we give a sum-over-graphs formula for the $S_n$-equivariant weight zero compactly supported Euler characteristic of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$. This formula allows for the computer-aided calculation, for each $g\le 7$, of the generating function $\mathsf{h}_g$ for these equivariant Euler characteristics for all $n$. More generally, we determine the dual complex of the boundary in any moduli space of pointed admissible $G$-covers of genus zero curves, when $G$ is abelian, as a symmetric $\Delta$-complex. We use these complexes to generalize our formula for $\mathsf{h}_g$ to moduli spaces of $n$-pointed smooth abelian covers of genus zero curves.

A Serre spectral sequence for the moduli space of tropical curves

We construct, for all $g\geq 2$ and $n\geq 0$, a spectral sequence of rational $S_n$-representations which computes the $S_n$-equivariant reduced rational cohomology of the tropical moduli spaces of curves $\Delta_{g,n}$ in terms of compactly supported cohomology groups of configuration spaces of $n$ points on graphs of genus $g$. Using the canonical $S_n$-equivariant isomorphisms $\widetilde{H}^{i-1}(\Delta_{g,n};\mathbb{Q}) \cong W_0 H^i_c(\mathcal{M}_{g,n};\mathbb{Q})$, we calculate the weight $0$, compactly supported rational cohomology of the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ in the range $g=3$ and $n\leq 9$, with partial computations available for $n\leq 13$.

Homology representations of compactified configurations on graphs applied to $\mathcal{M}_{2,n}$

We obtain new calculations of the top weight rational cohomology of the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{2,n}$, equivalently the rational homology of the tropical moduli spaces $Δ_{2,n}$, as a representation of $S_n$. These calculations are achieved fully for all $n\leq 10$, and partially -- for specific irreducible representations of $S_n$ -- for $n\le 22$. We also present conjectures, verified up to $n=22$, for the multiplicities of the irreducible representations $\mathrm{std}_n$ and $\mathrm{std}_n\otimes \mathrm{sgn}_n$. We achieve our calculations via a comparison with the homology of compactified configuration spaces of graphs. These homology groups are equipped with commuting actions of a symmetric group and the outer automorphism group of a free group. In this paper, we construct an efficient free resolution for these homology representations, from which we extract calculations on irreducible representations one at a time, simplifying the calculation of these homology representations.

Relative Richardson Varieties

A Richardson variety in a flag variety is an intersection of two Schubert varieties defined by transverse flags. We define and study relative Richardson varieties, which are defined over a base scheme with a vector bundle and two flags. To do so, we generalize transversality of flags to a relative notion, versality, that allows the flags to be non-transverse over some fibers. Relative Richardson varieties share many of the geometric properties of Richardson varieties. We generalize several geometric and cohomological facts about Richardson varieties to relative Richardson varieties. We also prove that the local geometry of a relative Richardson variety is governed, in a precise sense, by the two intersecting Schubert varieties, giving a generalization, in the flag variety case, of a theorem of Knutson-Woo-Yong; we also generalize this result to intersections of arbitrarily many relative Schubert varieties. We give an application to Brill-Noether varieties on elliptic curves, and a conjectural generalization to higher genus curves.

On the Top-Weight Rational Cohomology of $A_g$

We compute the top-weight rational cohomology of $A_g$ for $g=5$, $6$, and $7$, and we give some vanishing results for the top-weight rational cohomology of $A_8, A_9,$ and $ A_{10}$. When $g=5$ and $g=7$, we exhibit nonzero cohomology groups of $A_g$ in odd degree, thus answering a question highlighted by Grushevsky. Our methods develop the relationship between the top-weight cohomology of $A_g$ and the homology of the link of the moduli space of principally polarized tropical abelian varieties of rank $g$. To compute the latter we use the Voronoi complexes used by Elbaz-Vincent-Gangl-Soulé. Our computations give natural candidates for compactly supported cohomology classes of $A_g$ in weight $0$ that produce the stable cohomology classes of the Satake compactification of $A_g$ in weight $0$, under the Gysin spectral sequence for the latter space.

Euler characteristics of Brill-Noether varieties

We prove an enumerative formula for the algebraic Euler characteristic of Brill-Noether varieties, parametrizing degree d and rank r linear series on a general genus g curve, with ramification profiles specified at up to two general points. Up to sign, this Euler characteristic is the number of standard set-valued tableaux of a certain skew shape with g labels. We use a flat degeneration via the Eisenbud-Harris theory of limit linear series, relying on moduli-theoretic advances of Osserman and Murray-Osserman; the count of set-valued tableaux is an explicit enumeration of strata of this degeneration.

The Gieseker-Petri theorem and imposed ramification

We prove a smoothness result for spaces of linear series with prescribed ramification on twice-marked elliptic curves. In characteristic 0, we then apply the Eisenbud-Harris theory of limit linear series to deduce a new proof of the Gieseker-Petri theorem, along with a generalization to spaces of linear series with prescribed ramification at up to two points. Our main calculation involves the intersection of two Schubert cycles in a Grassmannian associated to almost-transverse flags.

Topology of moduli spaces of tropical curves with marked points

We study a space of genus $g$ stable, $n$-marked tropical curves with total edge length $1$. Its rational homology is identified both with top-weight cohomology of the complex moduli space $M_{g,n}$ and with the homology of a marked version of Kontsevich's graph complex, up to a shift in degrees. We prove a contractibility criterion that applies to various large subspaces. From this we derive a description of the homotopy type of the tropical moduli space for $g = 1$, the top weight cohomology of $M_{1,n}$ as an $S_n$-representation, and additional calculations for small $(g,n)$. We also deduce a vanishing theorem for homology of marked graph complexes from vanishing of cohomology of $M_{g,n}$ in appropriate degrees, and comment on stability phenomena, or lack thereof.

Tropical curves, graph complexes, and top weight cohomology of M_g

We study the topology of a space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with volume 1, showing that its reduced rational homology is canonically identified with both the top weight cohomology of M_g and also with the genus g part of the homology of Kontsevich's graph complex. Using a theorem of Willwacher relating this graph complex to the Grothendieck-Teichmueller Lie algebra, we deduce that H^{4g-6}(M_g;Q) is nonzero for g=3, g=5, and g at least 7. This disproves a recent conjecture of Church, Farb, and Putman as well as an older, more general conjecture of Kontsevich. We also give an independent proof of another theorem of Willwacher, that homology of the graph complex vanishes in negative degrees.

Combinatorial relations on skew Schur and skew stable Grothendieck polynomials

We give a combinatorial expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials of skew Young diagrams in terms of skew Schur functions, using a new row insertion algorithm for set-valued semistandard tableaux of skew shape. This expansion unifies some previous results: it generalizes a combinatorial formula obtained in earlier joint work with López Martín and Teixidor i Bigas concerning Brill-Noether curves, and it generalizes a 2000 formula of Lenart and a recent result of Reiner-Tenner-Yong to skew shapes. We also give an expansion in the other direction: expressing skew Schur functions in terms of skew Grothendieck polynomials.

A moduli stack of tropical curves

We contribute to the foundations of tropical geometry with a view towards formulating tropical moduli problems, and with the moduli space of curves as our main example. We propose a moduli functor for the moduli space of curves and show that it is representable by a geometric stack over the category of rational polyhedral cones. In this framework the natural forgetful morphisms between moduli spaces of curves with marked points function as universal curves. Our approach to tropical geometry permits tropical moduli problems---moduli of curves or otherwise---to be extended to logarithmic schemes. We use this to construct a smooth tropicalization morphism from the moduli space of algebraic curves to the moduli space of tropical curves, and we show that this morphism commutes with all of the tautological morphisms.

The tropicalization of the moduli space of curves II: Topology and applications

We study the topology of the tropical moduli space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with n marked points in which the bounded edges have total length 1, and prove that it is highly connected. Using the identification of this space with the dual complex of the boundary in the moduli space of stable algebraic curves, we give a simple expression for the top weight cohomology of M_{1,n} as a representation of the symmetric group and describe an explicit dual basis in homology consisting of abelian cycles for the pure mapping class group.
