Mechanisms of the in-plane magnetic anisotropy in superconducting NbSe2

We present a unifying picture of the magnetic in-plane anisotropies of two-dimensional superconductors based on transition metal dichalcogenides. The symmetry considerations are first applied to constrain the form of the conductivity tensor. We hence conclude that the two-fold periodicity of transport distinct from the planar Hall related contributions requires a tensor perturbation. At the same time, the six-fold periodic variation of the critical field results from the Rashba spin-orbit coupling on a hexagonal lattice. We have considered the effect of a weak tensor perturbation on the critical field, gap function, and magneto-conductivity. The latter is studied using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau phenomenology. The common origin of the two-fold anisotropy in transport and thermodynamics properties is identified. The scheme constructed here is applied to describe the existing theoretical scenarios from a unified point of view. This allows us to single out the differences and similarities between the suggested approaches.

Magnetism-driven unconventional effects in Ising superconductors: role of proximity, tunneling, and nematicity

Hybrid Ising superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator heterostructures provide a unique opportunity to explore the interplay between proximity-induced magnetism, spin-orbit coupling and superconductivity. Here we use a combination of first-principles calculations of NbSe$_{2}$/CrBr$_{3}$ heterostructures and an analytical theory of Ising superconductivity to analyze the existing experiments and provide a complete explanation of highly nontrivial and largely counterintuitive effects: an increase in the magnitude of the superconducting gap accompanied by the broadening of the tunneling peaks; hysteretic behavior of the tunneling conductance that sets in $\approx 2$ K below $T_c$; and nematic symmetry breaking in the superconducting state. The microscopic reason in all three cases appears to be the interplay between the proximity-induced exchange splitting and intrinsic defects. Finally, we predict additional interesting effects that at the moment cannot be addressed experimentally: spin-filtering when tunneling across CrBr$_{3}$ and tunneling ``hot spots'' in momentum space that are anticorrelated with regions where the spin-orbit splitting is maximum.

Magnetic impurities in thin films and 2D Ising superconductors

In the theory of dilute magnetic impurities in superconductors, the effect of all impurity spin-components is expressed via a single magnetic scattering rate $Γ_\mathrm{m}$. In a more realistic setting, magnetic impurities are anisotropic. In this case, the spatial randomness of three spin-components of impurities gives rise to generally different scattering rates $Γ_i$ ($i=1,2,3$). We explore the effects of anisotropic magnetic impurities on the in-plane critical field in 2D superconductors. We discuss singlet, triplet and parity-mixed order parameters allowed in systems without the inversion center. Also, the addition of a small amount of magnetic impurities may cause singlet to triplet crossovers. In all cases, different components of impurity spin affect the magnetic field -- temperature phase diagram differently. We show that anisotropy of the magnetic impurities can serve as a probe of unconventional triplet or parity-mixed superconductivity.
