Hierarchical Galaxy Growth and Scatter in the Stellar Mass - Halo Mass Relation

The relation between galaxies and dark matter halos reflects the combined effects of many distinct physical processes. Observations indicate that the $z=0$ stellar mass-halo mass (SMHM) relation has remarkably small scatter in stellar mass at fixed halo mass ($\lesssim$ 0.2 dex) with little dependence on halo mass. We investigate the origins of this scatter by combining N-body simulations with observational constraints on the SMHM relation. We find that at the group and cluster scale ($M_{\rm vir}>10^{14}{M_\odot}$) the scatter due purely to hierarchical assembly is $\approx0.16$ dex, which is comparable to recent direct observational estimates. At lower masses, mass buildup since $z\approx2$ is driven largely by in-situ growth. We include a model for the in-situ buildup of stellar mass and find that an intrinsic scatter in this growth channel of $0.2$ dex produces a relation between scatter and halo mass that is consistent with observations from $10^{12}{M_\odot}<M_{\rm vir}<10^{14.75}{M_\odot}$. The approximately constant scatter across a wide range of halo masses at $z=0$ thus appears to be a coincidence as it is determined largely by in-situ growth at low masses and by hierarchical assembly at high masses. These results indicate that the scatter in the SMHM relation can provide unique insight into the regularity of the galaxy formation process.

Spontaneous Repairing Liquid Metal/Si Nanocomposite as a Smart Conductive-Additive-Free Anode for Lithium-ion Battery

Silicon is a promising candidate for negative electrodes due to its high theoretical specific capacity (~3579 mAh g-1) and low lithiation potential (~0.40 V vs Li). However, its practical applications in battery have been inhibited by the large volume change (~400%) induced by Li+-insertion into Si lattices. Here, we attempt to resolve this issue at a fundamental level, and report for the first time a novel liquid metal (LM)-mediated spontaneous repairing conductive-additive-free Si anode for Li-ion battery. The fluidity of LM ensures the eternal contact between Si and the conducting-network during its repeated electrochemical reactions. The as-prepared nano-composite of LM/Si leads to superior performances as characterized by high capacity utilization (2300 mAh g-1 at 500 mA g-1), long-term stability (968 mAh g-1 after 1500 charge-discharge cycles at 8 A g-1 with 81.3% retention), high rate capability (360 mAh g-1 at 20 A g-1, equivalence of 55 C, or full charge/discharge in 65 seconds), and, in particular, an extra-ordinarily high initial coulombic efficiency (95.92%), which is not only the highest reported for Si to the best of our knowledge, but also higher than the mature graphitic carbon anodes. The unique approach described in this work not only resolves the basic stress challenges faced by the promising but often problematic alloy-type materials; in broader context it also provides a universal inspiration to all electrode materials whose electric properties suffer from extreme mechanic upheavals induced by the electrochemical strains during the cell reactions.

Atomic Conversion Reaction Mechanism of WO3 in Secondary Ion Batteries

Conversion reaction is one of the most important chemical processes in energy storage such as lithium ion batteries. While it is generally assumed that the conversion reaction is initiated by ion intercalation into the electrode material, solid evidence of intercalation and the subsequent transition mechanism to conversion remain elusive. Here, using well-defined WO3 single crystalline thin films grown on Nb doped SrTiO3(001) as a model electrode, we elucidate the conversion reaction mechanisms during Li+, Na+ and Ca2+ insertion into WO3 by in situ transmission electron microscopy studies. Intercalation reactions are explicitly revealed for all ion insertions. With corroboration from first principle molecular simulations, it is found that, beyond intercalation, ion-oxygen bonding destabilize the W framework, which gradually collapses to pseudo-amorphous structure. In addition, we show the interfacial tensile strain imposed by the SrTiO3 substrate can preserve the structure of an ultra-thin layer of WO3, offering a possible engineering solution to improve the cyclability of electrode materials. This study provides a detailed atomistic picture on the conversion-type electrodes in secondary ion batteries.

A Novel Approach to Constrain the Mass Ratio of Minor Mergers in Elliptical Galaxies: Application to NGC 4889, the Brightest Cluster Galaxy in Coma

Minor mergers are thought to be important for the build-up and structural evolution of massive elliptical galaxies. In this work, we report the discovery of a system of four shell features in NGC 4889, one of the brightest members of the Coma cluster, using optical images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The shells are well aligned with the major axis of the host and are likely to have been formed by the accretion of a small satellite galaxy. We have performed a detailed two-dimensional photometric decomposition of NGC 4889 and of the many overlapping nearby galaxies in its vicinity. This comprehensive model allows us not only to firmly detect the low-surface brightness shells, but, crucially, also to accurately measure their luminosities and colors. The shells are bluer than the underlying stars at the same radius in the main galaxy. We make use of the colors of the shells and the color-magnitude relation of the Coma cluster to infer the luminosity (or mass) of the progenitor galaxy. The shells in NGC 4889 appear to have been produced by the minor merger of a moderate-luminosity (M_I ~ -18.7 mag) disk (S0 or spiral) galaxy with a luminosity (mass) ratio of ~ 90:1 with respect to the primary galaxy. The novel methodology presented in this work can be exploited to decode the fossil record imprinted in the photometric substructure of other nearby early-type galaxies.
