Succinct Representations of Dynamic Strings

The rank and select operations over a string of length n from an alphabet of size $σ$ have been used widely in the design of succinct data structures. In many applications, the string itself need be maintained dynamically, allowing characters of the string to be inserted and deleted. Under the word RAM model with word size $w=Ω(\lg n)$, we design a succinct representation of dynamic strings using $nH_0 + o(n)\lgσ+ O(w)$ bits to support rank, select, insert and delete in $O(\frac{\lg n}{\lg\lg n}(\frac{\lg σ}{\lg\lg n}+1))$ time. When the alphabet size is small, i.e. when $σ= O(\polylog (n))$, including the case in which the string is a bit vector, these operations are supported in $O(\frac{\lg n}{\lg\lg n})$ time. Our data structures are more efficient than previous results on the same problem, and we have applied them to improve results on the design and construction of space-efficient text indexes.

Succinct Geometric Indexes Supporting Point Location Queries

We propose to design data structures called succinct geometric indexes of negligible space (more precisely, o(n) bits) that, by taking advantage of the n points in the data set permuted and stored elsewhere as a sequence, to support geometric queries in optimal time. Our first and main result is a succinct geometric index that can answer point location queries, a fundamental problem in computational geometry, on planar triangulations in O(lg n) time. We also design three variants of this index. The first supports point location using $\lg n + 2\sqrt{\lg n} + O(\lg^{1/4} n)$ point-line comparisons. The second supports point location in o(lg n) time when the coordinates are integers bounded by U. The last variant can answer point location in O(H+1) expected time, where H is the entropy of the query distribution. These results match the query efficiency of previous point location structures that use O(n) words or O(n lg n) bits, while saving drastic amounts of space. We then generalize our succinct geometric index to planar subdivisions, and design indexes for other types of queries. Finally, we apply our techniques to design the first implicit data structures that support point location in $O(\lg^2 n)$ time.

A New Direct Process to Prepare YBa2Cu3O7- films on Biaxially Textured Ag{110}<211>

YBCO films were successfully prepared on biaxially textured Ag{110}<211> substrates by using pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction results showed that the degree of preferential orientation of Ag{110}<211> substrates varied with increasing annealing temperature. With a thin template layer deposited at low temperature, YBCO film with c-axis orientation and in-plane biaxial alignment could be obtained at high deposition temperature. Scanning electron microscopy observation revealed that YBCO grains enlarged but Ag grains on the surface of the YBCO films became smaller with increasing deposition temperature. At optimal deposition conditions, Ag atoms diffuse into the YBCO grain boundaries, and then fill in the weak-link regions in the YBCO film, resulting in the conduction easier. Jc value of 5105A/cm2 was obtained at 77K and zero magnetic field for the best YBCO film in our work.
