EV Charging Station Wholesale Market Participation: A Strategic Bidding and Pricing Approach

This paper presents a framework for simultaneous bidding and pricing strategy for wholesale market participation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations aggregator. The proposed framework incorporates the EV charging stations' technical constraints as well as EV owners' preferences. A bi-level optimization is adopted to model the problem. In the upper level, the total profit of the EV charging station aggregator is maximized. In the lower-level problem, the EV owner's utility function is maximized. The EV owners' preferences are modeled using the quadratic utility function. The bi-level optimization problem which is non-convex and hard to solve is converted to a mixed-integer convex quadratic programming model by writing the optimal conditions of the lower-level problem that is solvable with commercial solvers. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is investigated by implementing simulation results.

Optimal Utilization of Third-Party Demand Response Resources in Vertically Integrated Utilities: A Game Theoretic Approach

This paper studies the optimal mechanisms for the vertically integrated utility to dispatch and incentivize the third-party demand response (DR) providers in its territory. A framework is proposed, with three-layer coupled Stackelberg and simultaneous games, to study the interactions and competitions among the profit-seeking process of the utility, the third-party DR providers, and the individual end users (EUs) in the DR programs. Two coupled single-leader-multiple-followers Stackelberg games with a three-layer structure are proposed to capture the interactions among the utility (modeled in the upper layer), the third-party DR providers (modeled in the middle layer), and the EUs in each DR program (modeled in the lower layer). The competitions among the EUs in each DR program is captured through a non-cooperative simultaneous game. An inconvenience cost function is proposed to model the DR provision willingness and capacity of different EUs. The Stackelberg game between the middle-layer DR provider and the lower-layer EUs is solved by converting the original bi-level programming to a singlelevel programming. This converted single-level programming is embedded in an iterative algorithm toward solving the entire coupled games framework. Case studies are performed on IEEE 34-bus and IEEE 69-bus test systems to illustrate the application of the proposed framework.

On dimensions of visible parts of self-similar sets with finite rotation groups

We derive an upper bound for the Assouad dimension of visible parts of self-similar sets generated by iterated function systems with finite rotation groups and satisfying the open set condition. The bound is valid for all visible parts and it depends on the penetrable part of the set, which is a concept defined in this paper. As a corollary, we obtain in the planar case that if the projection is a finite or countable union of intervals then the visible part is 1-dimensional. We also prove that the Assouad dimension of a visible part is strictly smaller than the Hausdorff dimension of the set provided the projection contains interior points.

Evidence for a spinon Kondo effect in cobalt atoms on single-layer 1T-TaSe$_2$

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are highly entangled, disordered magnetic states that arise in frustrated Mott insulators and host exotic fractional excitations such as spinons and chargons. Despite being charge insulators some QSLs are predicted to exhibit gapless itinerant spinons that yield metallic behavior in the spin channel. We have deposited isolated magnetic atoms onto single-layer (SL) 1T-TaSe$_2$, a gapless QSL candidate, to experimentally probe how itinerant spinons couple to impurity spin centers. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we observe the emergence of new, impurity-induced resonance peaks at the 1T-TaSe$_2$ Hubbard band edges when cobalt adatoms are positioned to have maximal spatial overlap with the Hubbard band charge distribution. These resonance peaks disappear when the spatial overlap is reduced or when the magnetic impurities are replaced with non-magnetic impurities. Theoretical simulations using a modified Anderson impurity model integrated with a gapless quantum spin liquid show that these resonance peaks are consistent with a Kondo resonance induced by spinons combined with spinon-chargon binding effects that arise due to QSL gauge-field fluctuations.

Optical and magneto-optical properties of ferromagnetic monolayer CrBr$_3$: A first-principles $GW$ and $GW$ plus Bethe-Salpeter equation study

The discovery of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors has triggered enormous research interest recently. In this work, we use first-principles many-body perturbation theory to study a prototypical 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor, monolayer chromium tribromide (CrBr$_3$). With broken time-reversal symmetry, spin-orbit coupling, and excitonic effects included through the full-spinor $GW$ and $GW$ plus Bethe-Salpeter equation ($GW$-BSE) methods, we compute the frequency-dependent layer polarizability tensor and dielectric function tensor that govern the optical and magneto-optical properties. In addition, we provide a detailed theoretical formalism for simulating magnetic circular dichroism, magneto-optical Kerr effect, and Faraday effect, demonstrating the approach with monolayer CrBr$_3$. Due to reduced dielectric screening in 2D and the localized nature of the Cr $d$ orbitals, we find strong self-energy effects on the quasiparticle band structure of monolayer CrBr$_3$ that give a 3.8 eV indirect band gap. Also, excitonic effects dominate the low-energy optical and magneto-optical responses in monolayer CrBr$_3$ where a large exciton binding energy of 2.3 eV is found for the lowest bright exciton state with excitation energy at 1.5 eV. We further find that the magneto-optical signals demonstrate strong dependence on the excitation frequency and substrate refractive index. Our theoretical framework for modeling optical and magneto-optical effects could serve as a powerful theoretical tool for future study of optoelectronic and spintronics devices consisting of van der Waals 2D magnets.

ISO and DSO Coordination: A Parametric Programming Approach

In this paper, a framework is proposed to coordinate the operation of the independent system operator (ISO) and distribution system operator (DSO) to leverage the wholesale market participation of distributed energy resources (DERs) aggregators while ensuring secure operation of distribution grids. The proposed coordination framework is based on parametric programming. The DSO builds the bid-in cost function based on the distribution system market considering its market player constraints and distribution system physical constraints including the power balance equations and voltage limitation constraints. The DSO submits the resulting bid-in cost function to the wholesale market operated by the ISO. After the clearance of the wholesale market, the DSO determines the share of its retail market participants (i.e., DER aggregators). Case studies are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Optimal Participation of Price-maker Battery Energy Storage Systems in Energy and Ancillary Services Markets Considering Degradation Cost

This paper proposes a bi-level optimization framework to investigate the optimal market operation strategies of price-maker battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in real-time energy, spinning reserve, and pay as performance regulation markets, with a special focus on understanding BESS's excessive regulation market participation observed by several system operators and the impact of battery degradation cost on BESS market activities. An accurate battery degradation cost function is integrated into the BESS's strategic bidding model. An automatic generation control (AGC) signal dispatch model is proposed to deploy AGC signals in the bi-level framework. This enables thorough studies for BESS's operating characteristics in the frequency regulation market, when both battery degradation and detailed AGC signal following activities are considered. Case studies on a synthetic system with real-world data are performed to study interactions between BESS profit maximization and wholesale market operations, considering system annual load and ancillary service requirements variations. The impacts of BESS capacity and replacement cost on its revenue from energy and ancillary services markets are also investigated.

A Game Theoretic Approach for Demand Response Allocation among Strategic Prosumers in Regulated Distribution Utilities

This paper studies an optimal allocation of demand response (DR) provisions among strategic photovoltaic (PV) prosumers, through third-party DR providers which operate within the territory of the regulated distribution utility. A game theoretic model, consisting of a sequential game coupled with a simultaneous game, is proposed to capture the competition and interaction among PV prosumers, the third-party DR providers, and the utility company. An iterative approach is proposed to solve for the Nash equilibrium of the game. With this game theoretic model, the DR provision quantities for strategic PV prosumers are optimally determined, considering the profit maximizations of the PV prosumers, the DR providers, and the utility company. Case studies on an IEEE test system verifies the proposed model and the solution approach.

Improved versions of some Furstenberg type slicing Theorems for self-affine carpets

Let $F$ be a Bedford-McMullen carpet defined by independent integer exponents. We prove that for every line $\ell \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$ not parallel to the major axes, $$ \dim_H (\ell \cap F) \leq \max \left\lbrace 0,\, \frac{\dim_H F}{\dim^* F} \cdot (\dim^* F-1) \right\rbrace$$ and $$ \dim_P (\ell \cap F) \leq \max \left\lbrace 0,\, \frac{\dim_P F}{\dim^* F} \cdot (\dim^* F-1) \right\rbrace$$ where $\dim^*$ is Furstenberg's star dimension (maximal dimension of microsets). This improves the state of art results on Furstenberg type slicing Theorems for affine invariant carpets.

Unmasking the Origin of Kinks in the Photoemission Spectra of Cuprate Superconductors

The origin of a ubiquitous bosonic coupling feature in the photoemission spectra of high-Tc cuprates, an energy-momentum dispersion 'kink' observed at ~70 meV binding energy, remains a two-decade-old mystery. Understanding this phenomenon requires an accurate description of the coupling between the electron and some collective modes. We report here ab initio calculations based on GW perturbation theory and show that correlation-enhanced electron-phonon interaction in cuprates gives rise to the strong kinks, which not only explains quantitatively the observations but provides new understanding of experiments. Our results reveal it is the electron density-of-states being the predominant factor in determining the doping-dependence of the kink size, manifesting the multi-band nature of the cuprates, as opposed to the prevalent belief of it being a measure of the mode-coupling strength.

Tuning the Magnetic and Electronic Properties of Strontium Titanate by Carbon Doping

The magnetic and electronic properties of strontium titanate with different carbon dopant configurations are explored using first-principles calculations with a generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the GGA+U approach. Our results show that the structural stability, electronic properties and magnetic properties of C-doped SrTiO3 strongly depend on the distance between carbon dopants. In both GGA and GGA+U calculations, the doping structure is mostly stable with a nonmagnetic feature when the carbon dopants are nearest neighbors, which can be ascribed to the formation of a C-C dimer pair accompanied by stronger C-C and weaker C-Ti hybridizations as the C-C distance becomes smaller. As the C-C distance increases, C-doped SrTiO3 changes from an n-type nonmagnetic metal to ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic half-metal and to an antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic semiconductor in GGA calculations, while it changes from a nonmagnetic semiconductor to ferromagnetic half-metal and to an antiferromagnetic semiconductor using the GGA+U method. Our work demonstrates the possibility of tailoring the magnetic and electronic properties of C-doped SrTiO3, which might provide some guidance to extend the applications of strontium titanate as a magnetic or optoelectronic material.

Real-time Locational Marginal Price Forecasting Using Generative Adversarial Network

In this paper, we propose a model-free unsupervised learning approach to forecast real-time locational marginal prices (RTLMPs) in wholesale electricity markets. By organizing system-wide hourly RTLMP data into a 3-dimensional (3D) tensor consisting of a series of time-indexed matrices, we formulate the RTLMP forecasting problem as a problem of generating the next matrix with forecasted RTLMPs given the historical RTLMP tensor, and propose a generative adversarial network (GAN) model to forecast RTLMPs. The proposed formulation preserves the spatio-temporal correlations among system-wide RTLMPs in the format of historical RTLMP tensor. The proposed GAN model learns the spatio-temporal correlations using the historical RTLMP tensors and generate RTLMPs that are statistically similar and temporally coherent to the historical RTLMP tensor. The proposed approach forecasts system-wide RTLMPs using only publicly available historical price data, without involving confidential information of system model, such as system parameters, topology, or operating conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified through case studies using historical RTLMP data in Southwest Power Pool (SPP).

A Two-stage Stochastic Programming DSO Framework for Comprehensive Market Participation of DER Aggregators under Uncertainty

In this paper, a distribution system operator (DSO) framework is proposed for comprehensive retail and wholesale markets participation of distributed energy resource (DER) aggregators under uncertainty based on two-stage stochastic programming. Different kinds of DER aggregators including energy storage aggregators (ESAGs), demand response aggregators (DRAGs), electric vehicle (EV) aggregating charging stations (EVCSs), dispatchable distributed generation (DDG) aggregators (DDGAGs), and renewable energy aggregators (REAGs) are modeled. Distribution network operation constraints are considered using a linearized power flow. The problem is modeled using mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) which can be solved by using commercial solvers. Case studies are conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed DSO framework.

Imaging spinon density modulations in a 2D quantum spin liquid

Two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnets are predicted under some conditions to exhibit a quantum spin liquid ground state whose low-energy behavior is described by a spinon Fermi surface. Directly imaging the resulting spinons, however, is difficult due to their fractional, chargeless nature. Here we use scanning tunneling spectroscopy to image spinon density modulations arising from a spinon Fermi surface instability in single-layer 1T-TaSe$_2$, a two-dimensional Mott insulator. We first demonstrate the existence of localized spins arranged on a triangular lattice in single-layer 1T-TaSe$_2$ by contacting it to a metallic 1H-TaSe$_2$ layer and measuring the Kondo effect. Subsequent spectroscopic imaging of isolated, single-layer 1T-TaSe$_2$ reveals long-wavelength modulations at Hubbard band energies that reflect spinon density modulations. This allows direct experimental measurement of the spinon Fermi wavevector, in good agreement with theoretical predictions for a 2D quantum spin liquid. These results establish single-layer 1T-TaSe$_2$ as a new platform for studying novel two-dimensional quantum-spin-liquid phenomena.

Impact of Battery Degradation on Market Participation of Utility-Scale Batteries: Case Studies

The recent decrease in battery manufacturing costs stimulates the market participation of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESSs). However, battery degradation remains a major concern for BESS owners while determining their BESS investment and operation strategies. This paper studies the impact of battery degradation on BESS's operation and revenue/cost in real-time energy, reserve, and pay as performance regulation markets. Comparative case studies are performed on two optimization frameworks which model the participation of a price-maker BESS in energy and ancillary services markets with and without considering battery degradation cost. A synthetic test system built upon real-world data is adopted in the case studies. Analyses reveal that degradation cost plays an important role in the scheduling of BESSs and should not be neglected. Several potential enhancements to the optimization frameworks are discussed based on the performed analyses.

Distribution network constraints are considered by using a linearized power flow. The problem is modeled using mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) which can be solved by commercial solvers. Case studies are performed to analyze the interactions between DER aggregators and wholesale/retail electricity markets.

Covering the Sierpiński carpet with tubes

We show that non-trivial $\times N$-invariant sets in $[0,1]^d$, such as the Sierpiński carpet and the Sierpiński sponge, are tube-null, that is, they can be covered by a union of tubular neighbourhoods of lines of arbitrarily small total volume. This introduces a new class of tube-null sets of dimension strictly between $d-1$ and $d$. We utilize ergodic-theoretic methods to decompose the set into finitely many parts, each of which projects onto a set of Hausdorff dimension less than $1$ in some direction. We also discuss coverings by tubes for other self-similar sets, and present various applications.

Predicting Real-Time Locational Marginal Prices: A GAN-Based Video Prediction Approach

In this paper, we propose an unsupervised data-driven approach to predict real-time locational marginal prices (RTLMPs). The proposed approach is built upon a general data structure for organizing system-wide heterogeneous market data streams into the format of market data images and videos. Leveraging this general data structure, the system-wide RTLMP prediction problem is formulated as a video prediction problem. A video prediction model based on generative adversarial networks (GAN) is proposed to learn the spatio-temporal correlations among historical RTLMPs and predict system-wide RTLMPs for the next hour. An autoregressive moving average (ARMA) calibration method is adopted to improve the prediction accuracy. The proposed RTLMP prediction method takes public market data as inputs, without requiring any confidential information on system topology, model parameters, or market operating details. Case studies using public market data from ISO New England (ISO-NE) and Southwest Power Pool (SPP) demonstrate that the proposed method is able to learn spatio-temporal correlations among RTLMPs and perform accurate RTLMP prediction.
