Rashba-like spin splitting along three momentum directions in trigonal layered PtBi2

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) has gained much attention for its rich physical phenomena and highly promising applications in spintronic devices. The Rashba-type SOC in systems with inversion symmetry breaking is particularly attractive for spintronics applications since it allows for flexible manipulation of spin current by external electric fields. Here, we report the discovery of a giant anisotropic Rashba-like spin splitting along three momentum directions (3D Rashba-like spin splitting) with a helical spin polarization around the M points in the Brillouin zone of trigonal layered PtBi2. Due to its inversion asymmetry and reduced symmetry at the M point, Rashba-type as well as Dresselhaus-type SOC cooperatively yield a 3D spin splitting with alpha~ 4.36 eVA in PtBi2. The experimental realization of 3D Rashba-like spin splitting not only has fundamental interests but also paves the way to the future exploration of a new class of material with unprecedented functionalities for spintronics applications.

Spaceborne low-noise single-photon detection for satellite-based quantum communications

Single-photon detectors (SPDs) play important roles in highly sensitive detection applications, such as fluorescence spectroscopy, remote sensing and ranging, deep space optical communications, elementary particle detection, and quantum communications. However, the adverse conditions in space, such as the increased radiation flux and thermal vacuum, severely limit their noise performances, reliability, and lifetime. Herein, we present the first example of spaceborne, low-noise, high reliability SPDs, based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) silicon avalanche photodiodes (APD). Based on the high noise-radiation sensitivity of silicon APD, we have developed special shielding structures, multistage cooling technologies, and configurable driver electronics that significantly improved the COTS APD reliability and mitigated the SPD noise-radiation sensitivity. This led to a reduction of the expected in-orbit radiation-induced dark count rate (DCR) from ~219 counts per second (cps) per day to ~0.76 cps/day. During a continuous period of continuous operations in orbit which spanned of 1029 days, the SPD DCR was maintained below 1000 cps, i.e., the actual in-orbit radiation-induced DCR increment rate was ~0.54 cps/day, i.e., two orders of magnitude lower than those evoked by previous technologies, while its photon detection efficiency was > 45%. Our spaceborne, low-noise SPDs established a feasible satellite-based up-link quantum communication that was validated on the quantum experiment science satellite platform. Moreover, our SPDs open new windows of opportunities for space research and applications in deep-space optical communications, single-photon laser ranging, as well as for testing the fundamental principles of physics in space.

Construction of Local Regular Dirichlet Form on the Sierpiński Gasket using $Γ$-Convergence

We construct a self-similar local regular Dirichlet form on the Sierpiński gasket using $Γ$-convergence of stable-like non-local closed forms. As a continuation of a recent paper by Grigor'yan and the author, we give the first \emph{unified} purely analytic construction of local regular Dirichlet forms that works both on the Sierpiński gasket and the Sierpiński carpet.

Biomimetic Polymer Film with Brilliant Brightness Using a One-Step Water Vapor-Induced Phase Separation Method

The scales of the white Cyphochilus beetles are endowed with unusual whiteness arising from the exceptional scattering efficiency of their disordered ultrastructure optimized through millions of years of evolution. Here, a simple, one-step method based on water vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS) is developed to prepare ultra-thin polystyrene (PS) films with similar microstructure and comparable optical performance. A typical biomimetic 3.5 um PS film exhibits a diffuse reflectance of 61% at 500 nm, which translates into a transport mean free path below 1 um. A complete optical characterization through Monte Carlo simulations reveals how such scattering performance arises from the scattering coefficient and scattering anisotropy, whose interplay provides insight into the morphological properties of the material. The potential of bright-white coatings as smart sensors or wearable devices is highlighted using a treated ultra-thin film as a real-time sensor for human exhalation.

Pedestrian re-identification based on Tree branch network with local and global learning

Deep part-based methods in recent literature have revealed the great potential of learning local part-level representation for pedestrian image in the task of person re-identification. However, global features that capture discriminative holistic information of human body are usually ignored or not well exploited. This motivates us to investigate joint learning global and local features from pedestrian images. Specifically, in this work, we propose a novel framework termed tree branch network (TBN) for person re-identification. Given a pedestrain image, the feature maps generated by the backbone CNN, are partitioned recursively into several pieces, each of which is followed by a bottleneck structure that learns finer-grained features for each level in the hierarchical tree-like framework. In this way, representations are learned in a coarse-to-fine manner and finally assembled to produce more discriminative image descriptions. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the global and local feature learning method in the proposed TBN framework. We also show significant improvement in performance over state-of-the-art methods on three public benchmarks: Market-1501, CUHK-03 and DukeMTMC.

Local and Non-Local Dirichlet Forms on the Sierpiński Gasket and the Sierpiński Carpet

This thesis is about local and non-local Dirichlet forms on the Sierpiński gasket and the Sierpiński carpet. We are concerned with the following three problems in analysis on the Sierpiński gasket and the Sierpiński carpet. First, a unified purely \emph{analytic} construction of local regular Dirichlet forms on the Sierpiń-ski gasket and the Sierpiński carpet. We give a purely analytic construction of a self-similar local regular Dirichlet form on the Sierpiński carpet using $Γ$-convergence of stable-like non-local closed forms which gives an answer to an open problem in analysis on fractals. We also apply this construction on the Sierpiński gasket. Second, determination of walk dimension \emph{without} using diffusion. Although the walk dimension is a parameter that determines the behaviour of diffusion, we give two approaches to the determination of the walk dimension \emph{prior} to the construction of diffusion. Third, approximation of local Dirichlet forms by non-local Dirichlet forms. We prove that non-local Dirichlet forms can approximate local Dirichlet forms as direct consequences of our construction of local Dirichlet forms. We also prove that on the Sierpiński gasket the local Dirichlet form can be obtained as a Mosco limit of non-local Dirichlet forms. Let us emphasize that we do \emph{not} need subordination technique based on heat kernel estimates.

Anisotropic hybridization in a new Kondo lattice compound CeCoInGa$_3$

We report a detailed and comparative study of the single crystal CeCoInGa$_3$ in both experiment and theory. Resistivity measurements reveal the typical behavior of Kondo lattice with the onset temperature of coherence, $T^*\approx 50\,$K. The magnetic specific heat can be well fitted using a spin-fluctuation model at low temperatures, yielding a large Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ\approx172\,$mJ/mol K$^2$ at 6 K, suggesting that this is a heavy-fermion compound with a pronounced coherence effect. The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad field-independent peak at $T_χ$ and shows an obvious anisotropy within the $bc$ plane, reflecting the anisotropy of the coherence effect at high temperatures. These are compared with strongly correlated calculations combining first-principles band structure calculations and dynamical mean-field theory. Our results confirm the onset of coherence at about 50 K and reveal a similar anisotropy in the hybridization gap, pointing to a close connection between the hybridization strength of the low-temperature Fermi-liquid state and the high-temperature coherence effect.

Toward Characteristic-Preserving Image-based Virtual Try-On Network

Image-based virtual try-on systems for fitting new in-shop clothes into a person image have attracted increasing research attention, yet is still challenging. A desirable pipeline should not only transform the target clothes into the most fitting shape seamlessly but also preserve well the clothes identity in the generated image, that is, the key characteristics (e.g. texture, logo, embroidery) that depict the original clothes. However, previous image-conditioned generation works fail to meet these critical requirements towards the plausible virtual try-on performance since they fail to handle large spatial misalignment between the input image and target clothes. Prior work explicitly tackled spatial deformation using shape context matching, but failed to preserve clothing details due to its coarse-to-fine strategy. In this work, we propose a new fully-learnable Characteristic-Preserving Virtual Try-On Network(CP-VTON) for addressing all real-world challenges in this task. First, CP-VTON learns a thin-plate spline transformation for transforming the in-shop clothes into fitting the body shape of the target person via a new Geometric Matching Module (GMM) rather than computing correspondences of interest points as prior works did. Second, to alleviate boundary artifacts of warped clothes and make the results more realistic, we employ a Try-On Module that learns a composition mask to integrate the warped clothes and the rendered image to ensure smoothness. Extensive experiments on a fashion dataset demonstrate our CP-VTON achieves the state-of-the-art virtual try-on performance both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Planar Orthogonal Polynomials As Type II Multiple Orthogonal Polynomials

We show that the planar orthogonal polynomials with $l$ logarithmic singularities in the potential are the multiple orthogonal polynomials (Hermite-Padé polynomials) of Type II with $l$ measures. We also find the ratio between the determinant of the moment matrix corresponding to the multiple orthogonal polynomials and the determinant of the moment matrix from the original planar measure.

Experimental observation of node-line-like surface states in LaBi

In a Dirac nodal line semimetal, the bulk conduction and valence bands touch at extended lines in the Brillouin zone. To date, most of the theoretically predicted and experimentally discovered nodal lines derive from the bulk bands of two- and three-dimensional materials. Here, based on combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations, we report the discovery of node-line-like surface states on the (001) surface of LaBi. These bands derive from the topological surface states of LaBi and bridge the band gap opened by spin-orbit coupling and band inversion. Our first-principles calculations reveal that these "nodal lines" have a tiny gap, which is beyond typical experimental resolution. These results may provide important information to understand the extraordinary physical properties of LaBi, such as the extremely large magnetoresistance and resistivity plateau.

Realization of low-energy Dirac fermions in (Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$)Te$_2$ superconductors

Superconducting and topological states are two distinct quantum states of matter. Superconductors with topologically nontrivial electronic states provide a platform to study the interplay between them. Recent study revealed that a bulk superconductor PdTe2 is a topological Dirac semimetal with type-II Dirac fermions. However, the Dirac fermions in PdTe2 have no contribution to the superconducting pair because the Dirac points reside far below the Fermi level (EF). Here, we show that in the isostructural compounds (Ir1-xPtx)Te2, the type-II Dirac points can be adjusted to EF by element substitution at x ~ 0.1, for which the bulk superconductivity appears near 2 K. The (Ir1-xPtx)Te2 superconductor with the Dirac points at EF paves the way for studying the relevant exotic physical phenomena such as topological superconductivity in Dirac semimetals.

Large-Margin Softmax Loss for Convolutional Neural Networks

Cross-entropy loss together with softmax is arguably one of the most common used supervision components in convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Despite its simplicity, popularity and excellent performance, the component does not explicitly encourage discriminative learning of features. In this paper, we propose a generalized large-margin softmax (L-Softmax) loss which explicitly encourages intra-class compactness and inter-class separability between learned features. Moreover, L-Softmax not only can adjust the desired margin but also can avoid overfitting. We also show that the L-Softmax loss can be optimized by typical stochastic gradient descent. Extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrate that the deeply-learned features with L-softmax loss become more discriminative, hence significantly boosting the performance on a variety of visual classification and verification tasks.

Ground-to-satellite quantum teleportation

An arbitrary unknown quantum state cannot be precisely measured or perfectly replicated. However, quantum teleportation allows faithful transfer of unknown quantum states from one object to another over long distance, without physical travelling of the object itself. Long-distance teleportation has been recognized as a fundamental element in protocols such as large-scale quantum networks and distributed quantum computation. However, the previous teleportation experiments between distant locations were limited to a distance on the order of 100 kilometers, due to photon loss in optical fibres or terrestrial free-space channels. An outstanding open challenge for a global-scale "quantum internet" is to significantly extend the range for teleportation. A promising solution to this problem is exploiting satellite platform and space-based link, which can conveniently connect two remote points on the Earth with greatly reduced channel loss because most of the photons' propagation path is in empty space. Here, we report the first quantum teleportation of independent single-photon qubits from a ground observatory to a low Earth orbit satellite - through an up-link channel - with a distance up to 1400 km. To optimize the link efficiency and overcome the atmospheric turbulence in the up-link, a series of techniques are developed, including a compact ultra-bright source of multi-photon entanglement, narrow beam divergence, high-bandwidth and high-accuracy acquiring, pointing, and tracking (APT). We demonstrate successful quantum teleportation for six input states in mutually unbiased bases with an average fidelity of 0.80+/-0.01, well above the classical limit. This work establishes the first ground-to-satellite up-link for faithful and ultra-long-distance quantum teleportation, an essential step toward global-scale quantum internet.

Random number generation with cosmic photons

Random numbers are indispensable for a variety of applications ranging from testing physics foundation to information encryption. In particular, nonlocality tests provide a strong evidence to our current understanding of nature -- quantum mechanics. All the random number generators (RNG) used for the existing tests are constructed locally, making the test results vulnerable to the freedom-of-choice loophole. We report an experimental realization of RNGs based on the arrival time of cosmic photons. The measurement outcomes (raw data) pass the standard NIST statistical test suite. We present a realistic design to employ these RNGs in a Bell test experiment, which addresses the freedom-of-choice loophole.

Discontinuity in the asymptotic behavior of planar orthogonal polynomials under a perturbation of the Gaussian weight

We consider the orthogonal polynomials, $\{P_n(z)\}_{n=0,1,\cdots}$, with respect to the measure $$|z-a|^{2c} e^{-N|z|^2}dA(z)$$ supported over the whole complex plane, where $a>0$, $N>0$ and $c>-1$. We look at the scaling limit where $n$ and $N$ tend to infinity while keeping their ratio, $n/N$, fixed. The support of the limiting zero distribution is given in terms of certain "limiting potential-theoretic skeleton" of the unit disk. We show that, as we vary $c$, both the skeleton and the asymptotic distribution of the zeros behave discontinuously at $c=0$. The smooth interpolation of the discontinuity is obtained by the further scaling of $c=e^{-ηN}$ in terms of the parameter $η\in[0,\infty).$
