Hyperbolic Diffusion Recommender Model

Diffusion models (DMs) have emerged as the new state-of-the-art family of deep generative models. To gain deeper insights into the limitations of diffusion models in recommender systems, we investigate the fundamental structural disparities between images and items. Consequently, items often exhibit distinct anisotropic and directional structures that are less prevalent in images. However, the traditional forward diffusion process continuously adds isotropic Gaussian noise, causing anisotropic signals to degrade into noise, which impairs the semantically meaningful representations in recommender systems. Inspired by the advancements in hyperbolic spaces, we propose a novel \textit{\textbf{H}yperbolic} \textit{\textbf{D}iffusion} \textit{\textbf{R}ecommender} \textit{\textbf{M}odel} (named HDRM). Unlike existing directional diffusion methods based on Euclidean space, the intrinsic non-Euclidean structure of hyperbolic space makes it particularly well-adapted for handling anisotropic diffusion processes. In particular, we begin by formulating concepts to characterize latent directed diffusion processes within a geometrically grounded hyperbolic space. Subsequently, we propose a novel hyperbolic latent diffusion process specifically tailored for users and items. Drawing upon the natural geometric attributes of hyperbolic spaces, we impose structural restrictions on the space to enhance hyperbolic diffusion propagation, thereby ensuring the preservation of the intrinsic topology of user-item graphs. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of HDRM.

Bridging Social Psychology and LLM Reasoning: Conflict-Aware Meta-Review Generation via Cognitive Alignment

The rapid growth of scholarly submissions has overwhelmed traditional peer review systems, driving the need for intelligent automation to preserve scientific rigor. While large language models (LLMs) show promise in automating manuscript critiques, their ability to synthesize high-stakes meta-reviews, which require conflict-aware reasoning and consensus derivation, remains underdeveloped. Existing methods fail to effectively handle conflicting viewpoints within differing opinions, and often introduce additional cognitive biases, such as anchoring effects and conformity bias.To overcome these limitations, we propose the Cognitive Alignment Framework (CAF), a dual-process architecture that transforms LLMs into adaptive scientific arbitrators. By operationalizing Kahneman's dual-process theory, CAF introduces a three-step cognitive pipeline: review initialization, incremental integration, and cognitive alignment.Empirical validation shows that CAF outperforms existing LLM-based methods, with sentiment consistency gains reaching up to 19.47\% and content consistency improving by as much as 12.95\%.

Robust Model Predictive Control of Fast Lithium-ion Battery Pretreatment for Safe Recycling

The proper disposal and repurposing of end-of-life electric vehicle batteries are critical for maximizing their environmental benefits. This study introduces a robust model predictive control (MPC) framework designed to optimize the battery discharging process during pre-treatment, ensuring both efficiency and safety. The proposed method explicitly incorporates temperature constraints to prevent overheating and potential hazards. By leveraging a control-oriented equivalent circuit model integrated with thermal dynamics, the MPC algorithm dynamically adjusts the discharging profile to maintain safe operating temperatures. Additionally, the robust controller is designed to account for model mismatches between the nonlinear battery dynamics and the linearized model, ensuring reliable performance under varying conditions. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through simulations comparing the robust MPC method with conventional discharging strategies, including constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) and constant current-constant temperature (CC-CT) methods. Results indicate that the robust MPC framework significantly reduces discharging time while adhering to safety constraints, offering a promising solution for the recycling and second-life applications of lithium-ion batteries.

Global existence for 2-D wave maps equation in exterior domains

In the paper [H. Kubo, Global existence for exterior problems of semilinear wave equations with the null condition in 2D, Evol. Equ. Control Theory 2 (2013), no. 2, 319-335], for the 2-D semilinear wave equation system $(\partial_t^2-Δ)v^I=Q^I(\partial_tv, \nabla_xv)$ ($1\le I\le M$) in the exterior domain with Dirichlet boundary condition, it is shown that the small data smooth solution $v=(v^1, \cdot\cdot\cdot, v^M)$ exists globally when the cubic nonlinearities $Q^I(\partial_tv, \nabla_xv)=O(|\partial_tv|^3+|\nabla_xv|^3)$ satisfy the null condition. We now focus on the global Dirichelt boundary value problem of 2-D wave maps equation with the form $\Box u^I=\sum_{J,K,L=1}^MC_{IJKL}u^JQ_0(u^K,u^L)$ $(1\le I\le M)$ and $Q_0(f,g)=\partial_tf\partial_tg-\sum_{j=1}^2\partial_jf\partial_jg$ in exterior domain. By establishing some crucial classes of pointwise spacetime decay estimates for the small data solution $u=(u^1, \cdot\cdot\cdot, u^M)$ and its derivatives, the global existence of $u$ is shown.

Local Avalanche Photodetectors Driven by Lightning-rod Effect and Surface Plasmon Excitations

Sensitive avalanche photodetectors (APDs) that operate within the ultraviolet spectrum are critically required for applications in detecting fire and deep-space exploration. However, the development of such devices faces significant challenges, including high avalanche breakdown voltage, the necessity for complex quenching circuits, and thermal runaway associated with Geiger-mode avalanche operation. To mitigate these issues, we report on a 4H-SiC APD design utilizing micro-holes (MHs) structures and Al nano-triangles (NTs) to enhance surface electric field driven by strong localized surface plasmon excitations and lightning-rod effect. The device demonstrates a record low avalanche breakdown voltage of approximately 14.5 V, a high detectivity of 7E13 Jones, a nanosecond-level response time, and repeated stable detections without the requirement of a quenching circuit. Collectively, when compared with the conventional wide-bandgap-based APDs, this device achieves a reduction in avalanche breakdown voltage by an order of magnitude and exhibits a substantial increase in detectivity. Consequently, the proposed APD configuration presents a promising candidate for ultraviolet detection and integrated optoelectronic circuits.

FairDgcl: Fairness-aware Recommendation with Dynamic Graph Contrastive Learning

As trustworthy AI continues to advance, the fairness issue in recommendations has received increasing attention. A recommender system is considered unfair when it produces unequal outcomes for different user groups based on user-sensitive attributes (e.g., age, gender). Some researchers have proposed data augmentation-based methods aiming at alleviating user-level unfairness by altering the skewed distribution of training data among various user groups. Despite yielding promising results, they often rely on fairness-related assumptions that may not align with reality, potentially reducing the data quality and negatively affecting model effectiveness. To tackle this issue, in this paper, we study how to implement high-quality data augmentation to improve recommendation fairness. Specifically, we propose FairDgcl, a dynamic graph adversarial contrastive learning framework aiming at improving fairness in recommender system. First, FairDgcl develops an adversarial contrastive network with a view generator and a view discriminator to learn generating fair augmentation strategies in an adversarial style. Then, we propose two dynamic, learnable models to generate contrastive views within contrastive learning framework, which automatically fine-tune the augmentation strategies. Meanwhile, we theoretically show that FairDgcl can simultaneously generate enhanced representations that possess both fairness and accuracy. Lastly, comprehensive experiments conducted on four real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed FairDgcl.

Statistical Inference with Nonignorable Non-Probability Survey Samples

Statistical inference with non-probability survey samples is an emerging topic in survey sampling and official statistics and has gained increased attention from researchers and practitioners in the field. Much of the existing literature, however, assumes that the participation mechanism for non-probability samples is ignorable. In this paper, we develop a pseudo-likelihood approach to estimate participation probabilities for nonignorable non-probability samples when auxiliary information is available from an existing reference probability sample. We further construct three estimators for the finite population mean using regression-based prediction, inverse probability weighting (IPW), and augmented IPW estimators, and study their asymptotic properties. Variance estimation for the proposed methods is considered within the same framework. The efficiency of our proposed methods is demonstrated through simulation studies and a real data analysis using the ESPACOV survey on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain.

Contouring Error Bounded Control for Biaxial Switched Linear Systems

Biaxial motion control systems are used extensively in manufacturing and printing industries. To improve throughput and reduce machine cost, lightweight materials are being proposed in structural components but may result in higher flexibility in the machine links. This flexibility is often position dependent and compromises precision of the end effector of the machine. To address the need for improved contouring accuracy in industrial machines with position-dependent structural flexibility, this paper introduces a novel contouring error-bounded control algorithm for biaxial switched linear systems. The proposed algorithm utilizes model predictive control to guarantee the satisfaction of state, input, and contouring error constraints for any admissible mode switching. In this paper, the switching signal remains unknown to the controller, although information about the minimum time the system is expected to stay in a specific mode is considered to be available. The proposed algorithm has the property of recursive feasibility and ensures the stability of the closed-loop system. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by applying it to a high-fidelity simulation of a dual-drive industrial laser machine. The results show that the contouring error is successfully bounded within the given tolerance.

A Survey of Fish Tracking Techniques Based on Computer Vision

Fish tracking is a key technology for obtaining movement trajectories and identifying abnormal behavior. However, it faces considerable challenges, including occlusion, multi-scale tracking, and fish deformation. Notably, extant reviews have focused more on behavioral analysis rather than providing a comprehensive overview of computer vision-based fish tracking approaches. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the advancements of fish tracking technologies over the past seven years (2017-2023). It explores diverse fish tracking techniques with an emphasis on fundamental localization and tracking methods. Auxiliary plugins commonly integrated into fish tracking systems, such as underwater image enhancement and re-identification, are also examined. Additionally, this paper summarizes open-source datasets, evaluation metrics, challenges, and applications in fish tracking research. Finally, a comprehensive discussion offers insights and future directions for vision-based fish tracking techniques. We hope that our work could provide a partial reference in the development of fish tracking algorithms.

Knowledge-based Multiple Adaptive Spaces Fusion for Recommendation

Since Knowledge Graphs (KGs) contain rich semantic information, recently there has been an influx of KG-enhanced recommendation methods. Most of existing methods are entirely designed based on euclidean space without considering curvature. However, recent studies have revealed that a tremendous graph-structured data exhibits highly non-euclidean properties. Motivated by these observations, in this work, we propose a knowledge-based multiple adaptive spaces fusion method for recommendation, namely MCKG. Unlike existing methods that solely adopt a specific manifold, we introduce the unified space that is compatible with hyperbolic, euclidean and spherical spaces. Furthermore, we fuse the multiple unified spaces in an attention manner to obtain the high-quality embeddings for better knowledge propagation. In addition, we propose a geometry-aware optimization strategy which enables the pull and push processes benefited from both hyperbolic and spherical spaces. Specifically, in hyperbolic space, we set smaller margins in the area near to the origin, which is conducive to distinguishing between highly similar positive items and negative ones. At the same time, we set larger margins in the area far from the origin to ensure the model has sufficient error tolerance. The similar manner also applies to spherical spaces. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate that the MCKG has a significant improvement over state-of-the-art recommendation methods. Further ablation experiments verify the importance of multi-space fusion and geometry-aware optimization strategy, justifying the rationality and effectiveness of MCKG.

Graceful User Following for Mobile Balance Assistive Robot in Daily Activities Assistance

Numerous diseases and aging can cause degeneration of people's balance ability resulting in limited mobility and even high risks of fall. Robotic technologies can provide more intensive rehabilitation exercises or be used as assistive devices to compensate for balance ability. However, With the new healthcare paradigm shifting from hospital care to home care, there is a gap in robotic systems that can provide care at home. This paper introduces Mobile Robotic Balance Assistant (MRBA), a compact and cost-effective balance assistive robot that can provide both rehabilitation training and activities of daily living (ADLs) assistance at home. A three degrees of freedom (3-DoF) robotic arm was designed to mimic the therapist arm function to provide balance assistance to the user. To minimize the interference to users' natural pelvis movements and gait patterns, the robot must have a Human-Robot Interface(HRI) that can detect user intention accurately and follow the user's movement smoothly and timely. Thus, a graceful user following control rule was proposed. The overall control architecture consists of two parts: an observer for human inputs estimation and an LQR-based controller with disturbance rejection. The proposed controller is validated in high-fidelity simulation with actual human trajectories, and the results successfully show the effectiveness of the method in different walking modes.

Statistical inference for the two-sample problem under likelihood ratio ordering, with application to the ROC curve estimation

The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is a powerful statistical tool and has been widely applied in medical research. In the ROC curve estimation, a commonly used assumption is that larger the biomarker value, greater severity the disease. In this paper, we mathematically interpret ``greater severity of the disease" as ``larger probability of being diseased". This in turn is equivalent to assume the likelihood ratio ordering of the biomarker between the diseased and healthy individuals. With this assumption, we first propose a Bernstein polynomial method to model the distributions of both samples; we then estimate the distributions by the maximum empirical likelihood principle. The ROC curve estimate and the associated summary statistics are obtained subsequently. Theoretically, we establish the asymptotic consistency of our estimators. Via extensive numerical studies, we compare the performance of our method with competitive methods. The application of our method is illustrated by a real-data example.

Safety-based Speed Control of a Wheelchair using Robust Adaptive Model Predictive Control

Electric-powered wheelchair plays an important role in providing accessibility for people with mobility impairment. Ensuring the safety of wheelchair operation in different application scenarios and for diverse users is crucial when the designing controller for tracking tasks. In this work, we propose a safety-based speed tracking control algorithm for wheelchair systems with external disturbances and uncertain parameters at the dynamic level. The set-membership approach is applied to estimate the sets of uncertain parameters online and a designed model predictive control scheme with online model and control parameter adaptation is presented to guarantee safety-related constraints during the tracking process. The proposed controller can drive the wheelchair speed to a desired reference within safety constraints. For the inadmissible reference that violates the constraints, the proposed controller can steer the system to the neighbourhood of the closest admissible reference. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is validated based on the high-fidelity speed tracking results of two tasks that involve feasible and infeasible references.

A Deep Learning-based Quality Assessment and Segmentation System with a Large-scale Benchmark Dataset for Optical Coherence Tomographic Angiography Image

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) is a non-invasive and non-contacting imaging technique providing visualization of microvasculature of retina and optic nerve head in human eyes in vivo. The adequate image quality of OCTA is the prerequisite for the subsequent quantification of retinal microvasculature. Traditionally, the image quality score based on signal strength is used for discriminating low quality. However, it is insufficient for identifying artefacts such as motion and off-centration, which rely specialized knowledge and need tedious and time-consuming manual identification. One of the most primary issues in OCTA analysis is to sort out the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) region in the retina, which highly correlates with any visual acuity disease. However, the variations in OCTA visual quality affect the performance of deep learning in any downstream marginally. Moreover, filtering the low-quality OCTA images out is both labor-intensive and time-consuming. To address these issues, we develop an automated computer-aided OCTA image processing system using deep neural networks as the classifier and segmentor to help ophthalmologists in clinical diagnosis and research. This system can be an assistive tool as it can process OCTA images of different formats to assess the quality and segment the FAZ area. The source code is freely available at https://github.com/shanzha09/COIPS.git. Another major contribution is the large-scale OCTA dataset, namely OCTA-25K-IQA-SEG we publicize for performance evaluation. It is comprised of four subsets, namely sOCTA-3$\times$3-10k, sOCTA-6$\times$6-14k, sOCTA-3$\times$3-1.1k-seg, and dOCTA-6$\times$6-1.1k-seg, which contains a total number of 25,665 images. The large-scale OCTA dataset is available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5111975, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5111972.

Semiparametric inference on Gini indices of two semicontinuous populations under density ratio models

The Gini index is a popular inequality measure with many applications in social and economic studies. This paper studies semiparametric inference on the Gini indices of two semicontinuous populations. We characterize the distribution of each semicontinuous population by a mixture of a discrete point mass at zero and a continuous skewed positive component. A semiparametric density ratio model is then employed to link the positive components of the two distributions. We propose the maximum empirical likelihood estimators of the two Gini indices and their difference, and further investigate the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators. The asymptotic results enable us to construct confidence intervals and perform hypothesis tests for the two Gini indices and their difference. We show that the proposed estimators are more efficient than the existing fully nonparametric estimators. The proposed estimators and the asymptotic results are also applicable to cases without excessive zero values. Simulation studies show the superiority of our proposed method over existing methods. Two real-data applications are presented using the proposed methods.

Dynamics of B-cell repertoires and emergence of cross-reactive responses in COVID-19 patients with different disease severity

COVID-19 patients show varying severity of the disease ranging from asymptomatic to requiring intensive care. Although a number of SARS-CoV-2 specific monoclonal antibodies have been identified, we still lack an understanding of the overall landscape of B-cell receptor (BCR) repertoires in COVID-19 patients. Here, we used high-throughput sequencing of bulk and plasma B-cells collected over multiple time points during infection to characterize signatures of B-cell response to SARS-CoV-2 in 19 patients. Using principled statistical approaches, we determined differential features of BCRs associated with different disease severity. We identified 38 significantly expanded clonal lineages shared among patients as candidates for specific responses to SARS-CoV-2. Using single-cell sequencing, we verified reactivity of BCRs shared among individuals to SARS-CoV-2 epitopes. Moreover, we identified natural emergence of a BCR with cross-reactivity to SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 in a number of patients. Our results provide important insights for development of rational therapies and vaccines against COVID-19.

Semiparametric empirical likelihood inference with estimating equations under density ratio models

The density ratio model (DRM) provides a flexible and useful platform for combining information from multiple sources. In this paper, we consider statistical inference under two-sample DRMs with additional parameters defined through and/or additional auxiliary information expressed as estimating equations. We examine the asymptotic properties of the maximum empirical likelihood estimators (MELEs) of the unknown parameters in the DRMs and/or defined through estimating equations, and establish the chi-square limiting distributions for the empirical likelihood ratio (ELR) statistics. We show that the asymptotic variance of the MELEs of the unknown parameters does not decrease if one estimating equation is dropped. Similar properties are obtained for inferences on the cumulative distribution function and quantiles of each of the populations involved. We also propose an ELR test for the validity and usefulness of the auxiliary information. Simulation studies show that correctly specified estimating equations for the auxiliary information result in more efficient estimators and shorter confidence intervals. Two real-data examples are used for illustrations.

Semiparametric inference on general functionals of two semicontinuous populations

In this paper, we propose new semiparametric procedures for making inference on linear functionals and their functions of two semicontinuous populations. The distribution of each population is usually characterized by a mixture of a discrete point mass at zero and a continuous skewed positive component, and hence such distribution is semicontinuous in the nature. To utilize the information from both populations, we model the positive components of the two mixture distributions via a semiparametric density ratio model. Under this model setup, we construct the maximum empirical likelihood estimators of the linear functionals and their functions, and establish the asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators. We show the proposed estimators of the linear functionals are more efficient than the fully nonparametric ones. The developed asymptotic results enable us to construct confidence regions and perform hypothesis tests for the linear functionals and their functions. We further apply these results to several important summary quantities such as the moments, the mean ratio, the coefficient of variation, and the generalized entropy class of inequality measures. Simulation studies demonstrate the advantages of our proposed semiparametric method over some existing methods. Two real data examples are provided for illustration.
