A New Measurement of the Spectral Lag of Gamma-Ray Bursts and its Implications for Spectral Evolution Behaviors

We carry out a systematical study of the spectral lag properties of 50 single-pulsed Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected by Fermi/GBM. By dividing the light curves into multiple consecutive energy channels we provide a new measurement of the spectral lag which is independent on energy channel selections. We perform a detailed statistical study of our new measurements. We find two similar power-law energy dependencies of both the pulse arrival time and pulse width. Our new results on the power-law indices would favor the relativistic geometric effects for the origin of spectral lag. However, a complete theoretical framework that can fully account for the diverse energy dependencies of both arrival time and pulse width revealed in this work is still missing. We also study the spectral evolution behaviors of the GRB pulses. We find that the GRB pulse with negligible spectral lag would usually have a shorter pulse duration and would appear to have a "hardness-intensity tracking" (HIT) behavior and the GRB pulse with a significant spectral lag would usually have a longer pulse duration and would appear to have a "hard-to-soft" (HTS) behavior.

Switchyard design for the Shanghai soft x-ray free electron laser facility

In this article, a feasible switchyard design is proposed for the Shanghai soft x-ray free electron laser facility. In the proposed scheme, a switchyard is used to transport the electron beam to different undulator lines. Three-dimensional start-to-end simulations have been carried out to research the beam dynamic during transportation. The results show that the emittance of the electron beam increases less than 10%, at meanwhile, the peak current, the energy spread and the bunch length are not spoiled as the beam passes through the switchyard. The microbunching instability of the beam and the jitter of the linear accelerator (linac) are analyzed as well.

On the Design of MAC Protocol and Transmission Scheduling for Internet of Things

With the ubiquitous sensing enabled by wireless sensor network technologies, Internet of Things (IoT) is developed to many areas of modern day living. The inexpensive IoT devices and platforms capable of wireless communications enable the ability to measure, infer and understand environmental indicators, from delicate ecologies and natural resources to urban environments. In this paper, we firstly investigate a scalable multimode-based MAC protocol, IoT-MAC, which consists of a channel contention period and a data transmission period, to reduce contention of channel access due to coexist of many IoT devices. Secondly, we study a data transmission scheduling algorithm to maximise data collection under the constraints of radio link quality and remaining energy of the IoT node, while ensuring a fair access to the radio channel. To study the performance of data reception rate, packet loss rate and latency, we evaluate the IoT-MAC and scheduling algorithm with varying data rate and different network scale.

Effect of plasmonic near field on the emittance of plasmon-enhanced photocathode

The introduction of the surface plasmon polarizations makes the emittance of the photocathode complicated. In this paper, the emittance of plasmon-enhanced photocathode is analyzed. It is first demonstrated that the plasmonic near field can increase the emittance of the plasmon-enhanced photocathode. A simulation method has been used to estimate the emittance caused by plasmonic near field, and the suppression method also has been discussed, both of which are significant for the design of high performance plasmon-enhanced photocathode.

Artificial Noise Aided Secrecy Information and Power Transfer in OFDMA Systems

In this paper, we study simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems with the coexistence of information receivers (IRs) and energy receivers (ERs). The IRs are served with best-effort secrecy data and the ERs harvest energy with minimum required harvested power. To enhance the physical layer security for IRs and yet satisfy energy harvesting requirements for ERs, we propose a new frequency domain artificial noise (AN) aided transmission strategy. With the new strategy, we study the optimal resource allocation for the weighted sum secrecy rate maximization for IRs by power and subcarrier allocation at the transmitter. The studied problem is shown to be a mixed integer programming problem and thus non-convex, while we propose an efficient algorithm for solving it based on the Lagrange duality method. To further reduce the computational complexity, we also propose a suboptimal algorithm of lower complexity. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of proposed algorithms as compared against other heuristic schemes.

Time-resolved electron beam diagnostics with sub-femtosecond resolution

In modern high-gain free-electron lasers, ultra-fast photon pulses designed for studying chemical, atomic and biological systems are generated from a serial of behaviors of high-brightness electron beam at the time-scale ranging from several hundred femtoseconds to sub-femtosecond. Currently, radiofrequency transverse deflectors are widely used to provide reliable, single-shot electron beam phase space diagnostics, with a temporal resolution of femtosecond. Here, we show that the time resolution limitations caused by the intrinsic beam size in transverse deflectors, can be compensated with specific transverse-to-longitudinal coupling elements. For the purpose, an undulator with transverse gradient field is introduced before the transverse deflector. With this technique, a resolution of less than 1fs root mean square has been theoretically demonstrated for measuring the longitudinal profile and/or the micro-bunching of the electron bunch.

Energy Harvesting for Physical-Layer Security in OFDMA Networks

In this paper, we study the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in downlink multiuser orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, where each user applies power splitting scheme to coordinate the energy harvesting and secrecy information decoding processes. Assuming equal power allocation across subcarriers, we formulate the problem to maximize the aggregate harvested power of all users while satisfying secrecy rate requirement of individual user by joint subcarrier allocation and optimal power splitting ratio selection. Due to the NP-hardness of the problem, we propose two suboptimal algorithms to solve the problem in the dual domain. The first one is an iterative algorithm that optimizes subcarrier allocation and power splitting in an alternating way. The second algorithm is based on a two-step approach that solves the subcarrier allocation and power splitting sequentially. The numerical results show that the proposed methods outperform conventional methods. It is also shown that the iterative algorithm performs close to the upper bound and the step-wise algorithm provides good tradeoffs between performance and complexity.

Joint Power Splitting and Secure Beamforming Design in the Wireless-powered Untrusted Relay Networks

In this work, we maximize the secrecy rate of the wireless-powered untrusted relay network by jointly designing power splitting (PS) ratio and relay beamforming with the proposed global optimal algorithm (GOA) and local optimal algorithm (LOA). Different from the literature, artificial noise (AN) sent by the destination not only degrades the channel condition of the eavesdropper to improve the secrecy rate, but also becomes a new source of energy powering the untrusted relay based on PS. Hence, it is of high economic benefits and efficiency to take advantage of AN compared with the literature. Simulation results show that LOA can achieve satisfactory secrecy rate performance compared with that of GOA, but with less computation time.

Demonstration of nonlinear-energy-spread compensation in relativistic electron bunches with corrugated structures

High quality electron beams with flat distributions in both energy and current are critical for many accelerator-based scientific facilities such as free-electron lasers and MeV ultrafast electron diffraction and microscopes. In this Letter we report on using corrugated structures to compensate for the beam nonlinear energy chirp imprinted by the curvature of the radio-frequency field, leading to a significant reduction in beam energy spread. By using a pair of corrugated structures with orthogonal orientations, we show that the quadrupole wake fields which otherwise increase beam emittance can be effectively canceled. This work also extends the applications of corrugated structures to the low beam charge (a few pC) and low beam energy (a few MeV) regime and may have a strong impact in many accelerator-based facilities.

Experimental demonstration of longitudinal beam phase space linearizer in a free-electron laser facility by corrugated structures

Removal of residual linear energy chirp and intrinsic nonlinear energy curvature in the relativistic electron beam from radiofrequency linear accelerator is of paramount importance for efficient lasing of a high-gain free-electron laser. Recently, it was theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the longitudinal wakefield excited by the electrons itself in the corrugated structure allows for precise control of the electron beam phase space. In this Letter, we report the first utilization of a corrugated structure as beam linearizer in the operation of a seeded free-electron laser driven by a 140 MeV linear accelerator, where a gain of ~10,000 over spontaneous emission was achieved at the second harmonic of the 1047 nm seed laser, and a free-electron laser bandwidth narrowing by about 50% was observed, in good agreement with the theoretical expectations.

Energy Harvesting for Secure OFDMA Systems

Energy harvesting and physical-layer security in wireless networks are of great significance. In this paper, we study the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in downlink orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, where each user applies power splitting to coordinate the energy harvesting and information decoding processes while secrecy information requirement is guaranteed. The problem is formulated to maximize the aggregate harvested power at the users while satisfying secrecy rate requirements of all users by subcarrier allocation and the optimal power splitting ratio selection. Due to the NP-hardness of the problem, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm. The numerical results show that the proposed method outperforms conventional methods.

Analysis of the microbunching instability in a mid-energy electron linac

Microbunching instability usually exists in the linear accelerator (linac) of a free electron laser (FEL) facility. If it is not controlled effectively, the beam quality will be damaged seriously and the machine will not operate properly. In the electron linac of a soft X-Ray FEL device, because the electron energy is not very high, the problem can become even more serious. As a typical example, the microbunching instability in the linac of the proposed Shanghai Soft X-ray Free Electron Laser facility (SXFEL) is investigated in detail by means of both analytical formulae and simulation tools. In the study, a new mechanism of introducing random noise into the beam current profile as the beam passes through a chicane-type bunch compressor is proposed. The higher-order modes that appear in the simulations suggest that further improvement of the current theoretical model of the instability is needed.

Multipacting saturation in parallel plate and micro-pulse electron gun

A novel parallel plate model is proposed that divided the electron cloud into three parts at saturation, and it is studied in detail using both an analytical approach and PIC (Particle In Cell) code simulations. As one part of the electron cloud, ribbons modes are suggested by tracking the trajectory of individual particle, and the aim of this mode form is to simplify the progress of multipacting effect in the parallel plate so as to be eliminated by optimizing RF parameters. The micro-pulse electron gun (MPG) has demonstrated the potential to address the need for high peak and average current electron beams, hence studying the multipacting in MPG is essential. On the basis of multipacting studying in the parallel plate, it is clear that increasing the cavity voltage is of interest in yielding high quality beams in the gun.

Coherent photon beam based diagnostics for a seeded extreme ultraviolet free-electron laser

Independently from electron beam based procedures, photon beam based diagnostics is an alternative way for alignment and commissioning of the numerous undulator cells in a high-gain short-wavelength free-electron laser (FEL). In this paper, using the seed laser modulated electron beam and the undulator fine tuning technique, a coherent photon beam based diagnostic was proposed for seeded FEL, and some preliminary experimental results at Shanghai deep ultraviolet FEL test facility were presented. It demonstrates that the spatial distribution of the coherent harmonic radiation from one individual or two consecutive undulator segments can be used to optimize the electron beam trajectory, to verify the undulator magnetic gap, and to adjust the phase match between two undulator segments.

Fast Polarization Switching Demonstration Using Crossed-Planar Undulator in a Seeded Free Electron Laser

Fast polarization switching of light sources is required over a wide spectral range to investigate the symmetry of matter. In this Letter, we report the first experimental demonstration of the crossed-planar undulator technique at a seeded free-electron laser, which holds great promise for the full control and fast switching of the polarization of short-wavelength radiation. In the experiment, the polarization state of the coherent radiation at the 2nd harmonic of the seed laser is switched successfully. The experiment results confirm the theory, and pave the way for applying the crossed-planar undulator technique for the seeded X-ray free electron lasers.
